Mountain Man's Price (Mountain Men Book 3)

She nodded. “Good. Now it’s my turn to speak. So listen up.”
I was ready and waiting with a quip, but the look on her face silenced me. I leaned back against the couch and waited for her to speak.
“I haven’t been fair to you, Luke,” she said quietly. “right from the beginning, I judged you, without really knowing the type of man that you are. And I placed all of my insecurities at your feet. I compared you to Adam.
“I treated you as if you were one and the same, but you’re not. Far from it. I’m sorry for the way I behaved. You didn’t deserve that. I hope you can forgive me.”
When I reached out and cupped her face, Violet closed her eyes and leaned into my touch.
“What made you change your mind about me?” I asked.
“You did,” she said. “But so did your friends, your brothers at the club.”
“They did?”
I’d have to remember to thank them.
She nodded.
“Having to stay at the clubhouse this past week, for my own safety, has opened my eyes to a lot of things. I’ve seen a different side to the club and to the brothers who belong to it.”
“You don’t hate us anymore?”
She shook her head. “I never hated you. I just didn’t understand you. I thought you were all something you’re not—something bad. I had this image in my mind of what the club was about.
“I thought it was filled with lawless men who had no regard for rules or for morals. I thought the men in the club treated women as objects—as possessions to take and own. But that isn’t even close to the truth. The brothers at the club—they’re not like that. At all.”
I could have told her all that of course, but I think it was something that she needed to learn for herself.
“So what does that mean for us?” I asked. “And for our relationship? Have you changed your mind about me?”
“I haven’t changed my mind about the way I feel about you,” she admitted. “Never that. I’ve always been attracted to you. And I’ve always felt a connection between us, something that has potential—something that can be developed.”
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. It felt as if all of my dreams were finally coming true.
“Are you really ready to see where this goes between us?”
She stroked her thumb against my cheek, soft and sure. “I’m ready to move on to the next chapter in my life. And that next chapter heavily features you. I don’t know what my future holds, but I hope that you’ll be in it.
“I hope that we can weather this storm and come out the other end, stronger than before.”
I reached out, took hold of her face, then closed the distance between us and kissed her full on the mouth. As I slid my tongue between her lips, she groaned and pulled me closer still. My mind was willing of course, but my body still hadn’t recovered enough to enjoy the things that I really wanted us to do together.
After a moment, I reluctantly pulled back.
“So, are we dating?” I asked with a wry grin on my lips.
She shook her head. “No. We’re not dating. We’re in a relationship.”
“So I get to call you my girlfriend?”
“No, but you can call me your old lady if you’d like.”
I felt a surge of pride and pulled her in for another kiss.
I would like.
I would like that very much.
But in the end, it all amounted to the same thing.
Violet was mine.
However, our future together was uncertain.
John and Tom had been captured, but Steele, the man they worked for was still at large which meant that Violet and I and all of our friends in Creede were still in danger.
Ethan had done some digging and discovered that Steele was higher up on the food chain than we’d first realized.
We couldn’t fight him on our own.
Ethan and Coop had been talking to the FBI and it was evident that their presence was about to shake up our little town.
Times were changing.
Creede was about to change.
But one thing was for sure.
If I had Violet at my side, I could weather any storm.
