“Anyone get the license plate of that truck?” she groaned.
“Look who’s back among the living,” Caleb replied with a smile. “Can you stand, sweetie?”
“I’ll try,” she said, and eased herself down.
He helped her, as her legs were a bit wobbly, and she winced at every movement. She stayed next to him, clinging to him to steady herself, and looked around. Everyone was still there and (if her nose was any indicator) a barbecue was in full swing. Heidi, Amy, and several others drew near to ask how she was.
“Well, I don’t think I’ll be sitting for at least a day, but what a ride! Um, how long was I out?”
“You mean up?” Heidi said with a grin. “Almost an hour.”
“Wow. Hey, can I get a burger? I’m famished.”
Caleb patted her on the back. “Sure, sweetie. Tell you what, why don’t you go in and get cleaned up and changed, and I’ll fix you a plate, okay?”
She nodded and smiled. “Sounds wonderful, thanks.”
Wincing with every step, panties in her hand, Olivia weaved her way through the crowd. Hard to believe that a few short months ago she didn’t know these people, and now they truly were good neighbors. Once inside, she slipped off her dress and rooted around in the dresser for fresh panties and her little pink skirt and white blouse. Holding the panties up, she lifted her leg, stifled a yelp, and froze.
She had to see it. Stepping over to the mirror, she turned her back to it, and looked over her shoulder. Two deep crimson cheeks were visible and she let out a long slow whistle.
Wow again. Yeah, not going to sit for a long time, and it was worth every smack.
Slowly, gingerly she dressed, the elastic on the leg holes of her panties cutting into her tender flesh. She then washed her face, brushed her hair, and painfully made her way back to the patio. Standing in the doorway, she paused to take it all in. Not merely the view, but the length and breadth of her new life. She felt like a bear awaking from its winter hibernation. After centuries of nothing, she had a new career, good friends, and a loving man to share it all with.
Moving back through the crowd, she couldn’t help but tingle, and it wasn’t from the jabs of pain at each step. No, she felt eyes on her at every move, and smirks and low whispers as if they knew something she didn’t. Her stomach doing flip flops, she approached the table, her muscles tense, which only made her wince more. Caleb sat to her right and he’d thoughtfully moved the chair from her spot.
“Here you are, my dear,” he said with a smile. “A feast fit for a queen.”
“Thank you, it looks and smells divine.”
Reaching for his fork, he knocked it off the table, and got down on one knee to hunt for it. “Of course, a true queen must have jewels,” he said, bringing his hand into view.
Olivia squeaked. There, cradled lovingly in his large hand was a sparkling diamond ring.
“Mrs. Hargee, will you do me the great honor and pleasure of being my wife?”
Olivia couldn’t help herself. Despite knowing that he was planning to do it at some point, and despite being ready to hear the words, and despite the big lug doing it in such a stupidly old-fashioned and romantic way, it still overwhelmed her. She opened her mouth to accept, but all she was able to do was bawl and nod.
A collective, “Awww,” echoed around them.
Caleb got down on both knees and gently hugged her. “Well, folks, I guess that qualifies as a yes.”
Standing there, her arms about him, and her face resting against his shoulder (and getting his shirt all wet), she felt one more piece to the mosaic of her life had been put in place. She saw the image coming together slowly: friends, career, excitement, now husband, and soon a child. Her life was good and getting better, and she couldn’t be happier.
