It was also because I loved her, and also because she was mine. I’d heard what she’d done to Einar. Any woman that forthright...damn, it’d made me smile.

Going on a crusade after every mesmer, however, which it seemed she might be doing, that was suicide.

I rose, steering the drip stand before me to the door. “You should get cracking. See if these contacts can find her.”

He peered over the top of the paper. “Already done. Yesterday. I can google too. Now fuck off out of my room.”

His last words as I turned the door handle: “Don’t ever forget, she has my mark on the back of her neck.”

I shut the door behind me and stared sightlessly along the busy corridor. Sick people were everywhere, and nurses, and trolleys. I had to get out of here soon. They’d cut out a portion of my lung but I healed fast.

  “The raven?” I muttered. “Bullshit.”

I needed to brand a daisy on her somewhere...like her ass.

  Notes by Mavros

It’s taken me a while to realize what I have here. This ability completely turned my world upside-down. Being able to have certain women just because I wanted them. Being able to control them. What man wouldn’t find that alluring?

I need to take notes. I need to find out more. If this goes away suddenly, I would really like to have some clues as to how to get it back again.

The above is a priority. I cannot imagine life without this.

How many is it now? Thirty-two? I think that’s the number. My care is becoming better, both for myself and them. I’m calming. It’s been a year and a half and no sign of it waning.

Am I the only one? So far I’ve seen no evidence of another man with this power. I can use it for more than sex. The potential is enormous. I don’t have to work, but I will. There are advantages.

My clients from now on will all be rich or powerful women. Or both. I can use them in my life. Smooth things out. I need to plan this properly.

My first little pet scientist. No names here, of course, but she thinks she may be able to unravel this. She believes it may be an infection, if so, there will be others.

Only one other have I found, so far. I’m going back to the places I’ve been, years ago.

The farther back in time I go, to places I visited once, the more mesmers I detect. Though she’s been unsuccessful in growing or isolating the cause, she thinks this is akin to a slow-growing infectious substance. A prion perhaps. Like Mad Cow disease. Which I find amusing. The way I spread it could be multiple. All supposition, of course, but airborne and mechanical transfer of the mesmer bug are possible, since clearly these men aren’t eating my brains.

She’s sure now, after studying the data, that I’m patient zero, the man who started it. How? Where? I doubt we’ll find out. So far there’s no evidence any of the others are infectious. They’re dead ends. After I die, there will be no more new mesmers.

I’m giving it to women through kissing them. It affects them far more rapidly than seems the usual. And they’re getting a mild infection that causes some odd signs. What I call increased feistiness. I’d wondered, just never seen the connection. They don’t obey quite as well as they should. Luckily all of them lose that. The mesmer bug doesn’t take properly in women. I heaved a sigh of relief when we decided this.

I’m not the only one, but I seem to be the most powerful. Others don’t see me as one of them, but I detect them. I’m the alpha of the group. The best. Unfortunately I see signs that most aren’t handling this like I did. The power changes them. This might become a problem.

The above was prophetic. I never thought I could be this sad, but I’ve found one who is different. She can resist. That might be dangerous. Given what has happened, I’m going to try to make use of her in the worst possible way.
