The Redemption (Legacy of the King's Pirates Book 1)

A cannon boomed in the distance. Merrick drew her close. “The fort is under attack.”
A scream pierced the darkness, followed by another volley of musket shot. She trembled in his arms. “Who is it?”
“I don’t know.” Merrick led her inside as fear snaked up his spine. He’d nearly lost Charlisse once before, and he had no intention of ever putting her in harm’s way again. Gripping her shoulders, he kissed her forehead. “Get dressed and pack our things.” Then turning, he grabbed his shirt and tossed it over his head. Who would dare attack such a well-defended port? The Dutch? Surely they would not risk a war with Spain when they had just ended one with England. The British? They preferred more surreptitious means of attacking their enemies. He could think of no alternative save pirates—and that disturbed him most of all.
“Don’t leave me here, Merrick.” Charlisse’s voice cracked. “In the middle of an enemy town. You know what these Spanish will do if they find an English woman in their midst.”
Hating the fear in her voice, Merrick shoved his feet into his boots then strapped on his baldric as the clang of a distant sword fight and the roar of a cannon blared through the window. He approached her, forcing a calm exterior. Crystal blue eyes met his, sparking with admiration, but also with fear.
“You are my wife. I will never let anything happen to you.” Cupping her chin, he kissed her, softly, deeply—never tiring of her taste.
Withdrawing, Charlisse glanced down and pressed a hand over her rounded stomach. “I’m afraid, Merrick.”
He placed his hand over hers. “I won’t let anything happen to either of you. Not you or little Alexander.”
She smiled. “So it’s a boy then?”
“I have a feeling, yes.”
Musket fire erupted outside, followed by the stench of gunpowder drifting in with the breeze.
Grabbing his cutlass, Merrick slid it into its sheath, then checked his pistols and tucked them into his baldric. “Get dressed. I’ll return soon.” He gave Charlisse a reassuring nod before he marched toward the door, cursing himself for bringing his wife to this dangerous Spanish city.
