  Elevated stern- and forecastles unfolded from the deck, followed by fore- and mizzenmasts, and two more pairs of wingsails, each corresponding to one of the new masts. The blue light lingered for a few more minutes, though I could see no further changes, and I estimated that the entire process took about twenty minutes, far longer than any other rank up I’d seen before.

  When the light finally faded, I was standing in front of a light blue three masted caravel. Richard’s hand, which I hadn't even noticed was still on my shoulder, dropped to his side, and I turned to see that his jaw was hanging open in shock.

  “Think you’ll fit on her now, brother?”

  The tales of the Cerulean Swift and her crew will return in book 2, The Pattern Pirates.
