The admiral fired once and the beam sent the intruder stumbling back to the floor.
Incredibly, she got up immediately and ran for the door. In the outer office, she lunged for the security guard and a moment later had his phaser in her hand. She adjusted it and fired it point-blank at the stunned guard, who disappeared in a flash of light.
Then she pointed the weapon directly into the office, straight at Admiral Justman, and fired. It hit the emergency forcefield that now covered the admiral’s door with great force, causing it to spark and ripple with energy, but the field held.
She tried again but the forcefield was too strong.
Then she turned her head sharply to look at motion behind her.
Turning back to face Justman and West, she gave them a disgusted look and pointed the phaser at her own chest.
A moment later, she disappeared in a great flash of red light.
“Patrick,” someone said to him.
Turning his head, he saw that the admiral was looking at him with concern. Then he felt himself sinking. He would have fallen if not for the admiral’s hands on him.
Admiral Justman lowered him gently to the floor.
[265] Then the admiral was shouting. “I need an emergency beam-out! Straight to medical ... then get the damn forcefield off!”
A moment later, West felt the room swirl around him.
“Stay with me, son,” the admiral said.
The room held its shape again.
“You are going to be fine. That’s an order,” the admiral said, his hands supporting West’s head.
“Yes, sir,” West said.
Then he felt a transporter beam take him. Looking up, he could see that it was taking the admiral as well.
