The Last Man in Tehran

Jon nodded at Kyra, who stepped toward the woman on the porch. “Ma’am, I—”

“Is my girl alive, Miss Stryker?”

Kyra felt her eyes begin to well up.

Sarah Todd saw it and knew the answer. Tears slid down her cheeks. “Where is she?”

“I can’t tell you where she is or how she died, Mrs. Todd. All of those details are still classified. I would tell you if I could,” Kyra said, wiping away her own tears. “But I can tell you that there’s someone watching over her and he’s promised to make sure she comes home, eventually.”

  “And you trust this man?”

  “I believe I do, yes.”

“Can you tell me how you found her?” Mrs. Todd asked.

Kyra looked over to Barron, who nodded at her. They’d gone over it all in his office back at Langley before they left. “That’s also classified, but . . . someone committed treason to make sure your daughter wouldn’t be forgotten,” Kyra told her. “I can’t tell you who or what they did, but I can tell you that someone cared about Sam. He never gave up on her.”

“It was Matt, wasn’t it? Matt always loved her. He would’ve done anything for Sam.” Sarah Todd wiped her face off with her sleeve, then looked up and stared past the group at cars passing behind them on the highway. “Please come in, Miss Stryker. Tell me what you can.”

Kyra looked back at the group behind her. Barron nodded at her to go. Kathy and Jon stood behind him, holding hands. Jon was smiling at her, a rare thing for him. Kathy was fighting not to cry.

Kyra turned back and walked up the steps into the old house.
