“They’ve got no choice,” Micah said. “You’re perfect for the job.”
Mrs. Solomon poured another tall glass of tea for Micah, that same big smile on her face.
“There we are,” she said. “Something that’ll keep you satisfied while I get dinner ready.”
“Thanks for inviting us over,” I said. “Really. It means a lot.”
“What did I tell you? I don’t have company over. I think the last time I cooked was back when Jamie was still around…”
Her smile didn’t go away but it was easy to tell she was thinking about her son from the way her eyes became so distant. Micah and I gave her the silence she needed before her smile went back to the way it usually was.
“There’s a time to mourn and a time to move on,” she said. “And now, it’s time to move on. We lose special people in our lives but sometimes life blesses us with new people and new friendships.”
She reached out and put her hand on top of mine.
“I’ll go get dinner started,” she said, leaving me alone with Micah.
“How are things?” I asked.
“Everything is fine,” Micah sighed. “Couldn’t be better. Business at the club is… calm. Can’t ask for anything more. The MC is wondering when you plan on stopping by again. Ash loves talking to you.”
“I noticed that… There a reason?”
“Probably just picking your brain. You ever see any women around them? The boys need all the help they can get!”
We shared a laugh. It was strange to think just a few weeks ago, we would never be able to share something like that. But a silence filled the living room again and I found myself biting my lip to stop from grinning.
“So… You’re really serious about staying in Ivory.”
“I’m getting used to it. It’s a change of pace from the city but change is a part of life. Change is… Change is good.”
“…Do you still think about them?”
“Every day. Not as much as I used to but…”
“They’ll always be with you, Audrey. No one can ever take that away from you.”
“And no one can ever take me away from you. I’m glad… I’m glad I met you. When I’m with you… I feel like I can be myself.”
“That’s all I want you to be.”
I leaned forward and put my head against his chest. He wrapped his arm around me, his embrace strong but comforting all at the same time.
“Jordan still has the cash Booth left behind,” he said. “It’s yours if you want it.”
“Knowing where it came from… What was done to get it… You know I don’t want anything to do with it.”
“That’s what I figured. Jordan will make it right.”
“I’ve got no doubt about that. The Cobras haven’t let me down yet.”
“We never will. I never will. I love you, Audrey.”
I slowly turned my head up and looked into his eyes. A soft smile on his lips, I knew he meant it.
“I…” I swallowed when it suddenly became hard to get the words out. “…I love you, too.”
I put my head back on his chest and enjoyed the peace and quiet of Mrs. Solomon’s living room. He kissed me on the top of the head and we leaned back on the couch together. Micah’s heart thumped against his chest and in my ear. I sighed a deep breath of relief, feeling the weight of the world lift from my shoulders.
My focus had changed. My senses came back to me. I didn’t have to worry about not having a future, wondering if I would wake up to see tomorrow. Micah was with me. I was happy. And that was enough to make me smile.
