Smiling, Rosalina surprises me with her words, “Well, we are getting along so I won’t be rude and call you a liar. Amalia can speak for herself so don’t presume to know how she feels.”
Carlos is furious. I’m trying to maintain a scowl on my face. They look ready to kill him. “Carlos, sweetheart, let’s go speak to my father,” I purr trying to diminish the fire burning in his eyes. When he takes his last breath, it will be at my hands alone.
Hours have gone by, and guests are finally leaving. Carlos and my father are making their way with a lawyer to his office. The party was everything Carlos asked for and more. I’ve played my part of the dutiful wife long enough. Meeting the eye of Nico across the room, I motion for him to leave. I don’t want him to be blamed for what’s about to happen.
I make my way down the hallway to Carlos’ office. Finally, after weeks of being in this living nightmare, my father has now officially drawn up the legal papers naming Carlos the new “boss” of our family business. Pressing the small button, I push open the door when I hear Carlos call out to enter. Heaven forbid I just barge in. I have a scar I have from my very first day here thanks to the stab wound he inflicted.
“Gentlemen, would anyone care for a celebration drink? “ I ask, already making my way to the liquor bar with the pills clutched in my hand.
Nodding, Carlos gives me a smile. Handing the last paper to the lawyer, he unbuttons the jacket of his suit. Lawyer man denies a drink. Perfect.
“I’ll go file these now Senor Valentine, Senor Perez,” the lawyer tells them, dropping the last paper in his briefcase.
Drinks in hand, I slink over to where my husband is shaking hands with my father. “Here you go.”
Idiots. Senor Valentine is already feeling the effects of his liquor. Sitting in the chair, he looks from his glass to back to me. Fighting to keep his eyes open, he starts to speak, but it’s just a slurred mess. I gave my father the pill to make him pass out until Carlos dies. Nope, he won’t die, unlike dear o’ Carlos, who is fighting to stay alive. Patting his hand, I push his chest until he drops into the leather chair I hate so much.
“Do you feel that? Your heart racing a mile a minute, that primal 'fight or flight' instinct. Are your lungs feeling as if they have been set on fire as you fight to breathe?” Leaning in close, I whisper, “Now you’re my bitch. See you in hell.”
Making my way to the door, I look back one last time. Carlos isn’t breathing. Hernando won’t be much longer if I play my cards right. Shutting the door behind me, I hum to myself as I make my way upstairs to bed.
Nico
I’ve been wandering around this place for quite some time now, getting a feel for the layout should tonight’s plans go wrong somehow and I need to get us out quickly. I have done my part, and Rosalina has given the pills to Amalia. No one will ever be able to tie the death of that pussy to my woman.
Amalia is stronger than what anyone gives her credit for. Most women would have given up long before now, let alone have the guts to kill. I can hear a man groaning from the room ahead. The door is wide open, so I know he is looking for an audience.
I turn towards the door and see my Princesa on her knees before a man who has his cock shoved down her throat. Ah, the man of the hour himself, Carlos. I don’t like seeing her this way, from this position. What I want is to throw him into the window, so it breaks and cuts off his dick.
I can tell the exact moment Amalia notices me standing here. I read it in her eyes before she shuts it off and it’s gone. She is ashamed, hurt and I’m sure she thinks I blame her. I don’t, but if I stand here any longer, Carlos or I won’t make it out alive. I’m not betting on him to survive.
I turn and walk away, meeting up with Rosalina and Tony. Rosalina doesn’t understand what I love about Amalia, she’s told me this on more than one occasion. Of course, I then told her to shut her damn mouth, or I would sew it shut for her. I’m standing here trying not to murder Carlos while Rosalina and Tony talk about baby names.
There is a strange calm that washes over me when Amalia walks into the room. I know she’s here before I ever see her. Carlos and Amalia finally make their way to us, and I can see she has shut her true feelings away with the look she portrays. It’s fine. I know her tells, and I can see the serpent under her skin waiting to attack.
Carlos introduces himself to Rosalina and Tony bypassing me when he shakes their hands. That’s quite alright with me; I can’t say I wouldn’t strangle him if my hand made any move towards him. I just hope I can hold off for a few more hours. No matter who does it, Carlos Perez is going to die tonight for everything he has done to her.

Standing in the shower, I breathe easier than I have in months. I know starting tomorrow that I will have to play the part of a sad wife. Crying for the man that has been nothing but cruel to me will be a test, but I am free, and I will soon be the head of my father’s business. The day I married Carlos, I stood to inherit all of his fortune and the business since he doesn’t have any children, my father forgot that part when he signed over everything last night.
My conscious should keep me awake, but it doesn’t. I fall asleep almost instantly. Screaming pierces the night, waking me up. Fuck. I forgot about Laura. Why she is going into his office in the middle of the night, I don’t know. I take off all of my clothes and run out of the room towards the wailing sound of Laura.
“What’s wrong?” I ask wide-eyed an edge of worry in my voice.
Laura points into the office where Carlos is sprawled in his chair, and my father is just starting to wake. I run over to Carlos, dropping to my knees next to him and searching for a pulse. I know, why am I naked right? Well anyone that knows how things go here would notice if I was wearing them all of a sudden.
I think of all he has done to me causing my eyes to shed tears, “Call the police. He’s dead.”
Laura comes back with a small robe for me to wear as the police officers flood the house. No one heard or saw anything. There isn’t a single sign that someone killed him to be found. I walk alone upstairs as the men, and my father are seen out. In just a few hours, I will call the lawyer to be sure the paperwork went through and to pull any documents I will need. I drop onto the bed with a smile on my face until I remember the look on Nico’s face last night. I may never be with him, but he saved me. He let me slay my own dragon.
Knocking on the bedroom door wakes me, the sunlight is streaming in through the curtains, so it has to be morning already. I wrap the robe around myself as I open the door to Laura’s face, “Yes?”
“I know it was you. I just wanted to say thank you for doing it. Senor Perez… he was going to sell me, I heard it the other day. He said I wasn’t worth anything to him anymore and he was going to sell me,” she tells me, falling to her knees in front of me.
I don’t know what to say. I had no clue who the man I was married to really was.
“Do you have any family? Do you want to work for me?” I ask.
I have Carlos’ phone in my hand already dialing the lawyer.
“Senor Perez, good morning. I have just got the signature I needed to finalize it all.”
Clearing my throat, I explain who I am and why I’m calling, “Please tell me he left me something. I’ve never had to work before, and I just don’t know what I will do.”
“Senora Perez, I will have all of Carlos’ businesses in your name in a few hours. He had no will and no children. It all belongs to you.”
Shutting the phone, I wait for Laura to decide, “Ahem, I would like to stay please Senora.”
“Amalia. You call me Amalia. You can be my housekeeper, but you can stop anytime you want. I won’t force you to stay.”
I’m sitting in the living room when the lawyer arrives, I always did hate that office. Signing the last paper in front of me seals the deal. I now own everything including my father’s business. When the man leaves I pull out my own phone, the one Carlos took from me after he found me on it trying to call any
one who could help.
Dialing my father, I wait until I hear his voice, “Get out of my seat Hernando. I’m the one in charge now.”
Nico
I hate that I had to leave as quickly as I did but a job came up, and it can’t be ignored. This job should have only taken a couple of days, but it has turned into weeks. I was told only one woman was being held, but there is maybe a hundred of them locked away in this location alone. My hit is for the leader, Tito the dog, as I tend to call him, I’m supposed to leave the others alone and just take the one girl.
That’s not possible. All one hundred will be taken back with me, and all of the men will die. I have some colleagues on their way to help me finish this job now. I can’t wait to get home to Amalia if she forgives me for not being there. Spitting on the ground, I raise the binoculars to my face, someone new is showing up, and I haven’t accounted for more men.
My phone vibrates with another missed call from Amalia. Running my hands through my hair, I turn to the men that are going to be helping me. “We need to end this tonight.”
Pulling out my roughly drawn map, we spend the next few hours coming up with a plan. The night turns into a blur of bodies, blood, and screaming women. We left with almost eighty women, and none of the men survived. Transporting these women to the US Embassy is easier than we could have ever hoped for.
It’s time to go home. I just hope Amalia forgives me.

Three months later…
I am lonely in this house. I had someone tear Carlos’ home down and build me a new one instead. It’s small, smaller than most would expect but it’s what I wanted. Laura lives on her own in the house I bought her just minutes away. My father fought me on taking over the business every step of the way, typical man never thought I would make it this far.
Nico refused to answer my calls for over a month after Carlos died. Rosalina and I finally sat down and had the talk we should have had three years ago after the Elis fiasco. Now we have a better relationship, so that’s something since she has just had a child. Elena Maria is the sweetest baby; her parents are deadly but in love still.
I turn off all the lights and make my way upstairs. I finally stopped taking scalding hot showers, and now I tend to lay in the tub with a glass of wine. Laying down, I just start to drift off when I hear footsteps coming up the stairs. I grab the gun from under my pillow as the bedroom door opens.
“Put the fucking gun down Princesa.”
Nico. I reach over and turn on the lamp beside me, whirling around to see him. His shirt is covered in blood.
“Are you bleeding?” I screech, rushing over to him.
Pulling me to the bathroom with him, Nico turns the shower on and begins to strip. I don’t see any wounds on him, so that means he killed someone. I’m not naive. I know that Nico is a contract killer. Nico finally called me two months ago, he told me where he went and why he didn’t answer before. Holding out his hand to me, I take it dropping my small robe.
“I’ll explain once I’m clean. For now, I want the few moments before you send me away to be like this,” Nico rasps, pulling me into the shower with him.
Nico pours the shampoo in his hands and works it into my hair. I’ve never had someone else wash me, but this is nice. Lathering his body in the only body wash I own, the smell of orchids overtakes my senses, as he watches me. We haven’t ever been like this in the past two months we have been together. We have been taking this relationship slow since we have both been through so much this past year. When we have both rinsed off, we dry ourselves and sit on the bed so Nico can explain what is going on.
Nico runs his hands through his hair, mumbling to himself until he figures out what to say, “I killed him Princesa.” I don’t understand who he means, closing his eyes, he whispers, “Your father.”
My father. My father is dead and at the hands of Nico —the man I love. I should feel something for Hernando, but I don’t. He was never really my dad, he only kept me around to belittle and use for his own gain.
“Why? Did the someone order it?” I ask, grabbing hold of his hand and intertwining our fingers.
Shaking his head, Nico explains, “No Princesa. This was personal for all that he had done to you.”
Turning his face to mine, I cover his lips with my own. I love this man. My knight. Gently pushing my shoulders back, Nico kisses down my neck and my collarbone. Taking my nipple in his mouth, Nico bites down until I gasp from the mix of pleasure and pain. He continues to kiss down my body spreading my thighs as he lowers his mouth to place kiss along my pussy as he works his way back up to my clit. Teasing me with his fingers, Nico slowly pushes his fingers inside of me causing me to shudder as my body accepts him.
My legs are shaking from the need to orgasm. Nico prolongs my torture as he crawls up my body plunging his tongue into my mouth as he slowly rocks his cock into me an inch at a time. Nico thrusts into me, owning every inch of my body, mind, and soul. I call out his name as I orgasm, “Nico!”
Looking at my face, Nico comes and stills, “Marry me, Princesa.”
I stare at him slack-jawed. “Marry you? Even after everything you still want to be tied to me?”
Tsking me, Nico captures my mouth again. He leans down to my ear and whispers, “I want to marry you. Say yes Amalia.”
Nodding, I try to find the words he wants to hear, nothing seems good enough compared to his words. Smiling I simply say, “Yes.”
Nico
I’m staring at the job in front of me. I knew he was a piece of shit, but this is too far. Crumpling the paper, I throw it across the room.
“Nico, you know I won’t do it, but that doesn’t mean someone won’t,” Hans tells me as if I don’t already know. “She’s the one from Russia, right?”
Nodding, I lean back in his office chair. “Yeah, that’s her. Amalia.” Fuck! I need to either get Hernando to call off the hit or kill him myself. What kind of father orders a contract on his own daughter? I’m just lucky that Hans recognized her from Ruslan’s home.
“I’ll handle him. You just keep everyone else for coming after her,” I instruct.
This will call for something a bit more personal than a gun to his head. I want to make him suffer. Picking up the knife, I test the weight in my hand. This one is perfect for what I want. A quick wave and I leave Hans’ office building. That fucker has an office in every country to make him seem like the legit businessman he claims to be.
I don’t knock, I don’t even wait for someone to come to me. I barge right into Hernando’s home, the one place he isn’t guarded as heavily. He thinks no one can touch him here. This fucker doesn’t have any guards worth a damn anyway. They probably don’t even know I’m here. Closing his office door behind me, I can hear Hernando cussing. Ah, that’s right he knows who I am. Hernando reaches for the phone, no doubt trying to call for help. Thud. The knife in my hand hits the table under his hand.
Screaming in pain, Hernando begins to beg, “Please take whatever you want.”
Grinning, I lean closer to him, “And if I want to take your life?”
Not giving him time to speak, I pull the knife up and then down into the meaty flesh of his thigh. I don’t hold back as I pull up and drive back down to another part of his body. Blood covers his desk, the floor, and my clothes. I don’t even care that this one was far messier than usual hits. This one was personal.
“Now you can never hurt Amalia again.”

My mind is racing a mile a minute. Nico is sleeping peacefully next to me, but my mind won’t stop. I don’t want anything extravagant for our wedding. That is the one thing I do know and am sure of; just the two of us is fine with me even though I would love to have our family there. Nico wraps his arm around me, pulling me close until I’m flush with him. Closing my eyes, I fall asleep next to my fiance.
My alarm clock goes off at six am to begin my day. Sliding from the bed, I dress quickly and as quietly as I can to meet Laura in the gy
m at six-thirty for our daily training. I made a promise to Laura that I would teach her all that I could on self-defense. For three months now, we have Silent Man come and work with us on self-defense maneuvers, and then we run five miles together. Silent Man, whose name is actually Bennett, and Laura have been seeing each other for just over a month now.
I creep down the stairs and see both Laura and Bennett waiting on me. Smiling, I explain that Nico is sleeping, so we need to keep it down. It’s been thirty minutes exactly when Nico walks into the gym with a scowl on his face. I don’t understand why until I see it is aimed at Bennett. I don’t have time to deal with his tantrum. I have a business to run.
Walking into my small office I sit at my desk, I bring up my calendar to see who I am meeting today and why. I have only one meeting, which is a conference call with my South African ruby supplier. Since I took over, we have expanded to other jewels and have also gone more legally legit versus where Hernando and Carlos were heading.
