Epilogue
"It's an unusual name for a Braxian," Olivia said. "Or for a human royal. And, I'm sure, for an Ethereal. But I have to say I really like it. And I'm touched."
The lawn was immaculate and the grass felt soft and cool under Dani's feet.
"It wasn't hard to decide. It's a way to honor them all. It was actually his first name, but not a lot of people know that. And I couldn't well call this kid 'Copernicus'. It's a little too obvious. And weird."
"I imagine you had your friend in mind, as well."
"Yes. That's wher
e the idea came from, actually. Then I thought about it some more, and, well..."
"And the pieces just fit together like they sometimes do," Olivia completed. "I know the feeling. And the other name was your idea too, of course."
"Except the last half. Well, the kid will be an Ethereal king, probably. Maybe. No one knows how that works. But maybe. So it's only fair."
"Has he been showing any Ethereal talents?"
"Minor ones. He can move small toys without touching them. And you've heard the voice, of course."
"Yes," Olivia laughed. "It's a strong one. But so beautiful, even his hungry cries are tolerable. Just."
"Yeah. Just about."
Dani looked across the lawn. Crixael had been right – their first child was a son. And Ethereal or not, the king had no problems feeling affection for his offspring. He clearly loved the baby so much it was sometimes hard to tear him away from his little son. Now he was carrying the baby around in the garden in his strong arms while the heir to his throne slept soundly in his arms.
"So," Dani said. "Are you still weirded out about having an Ethereal as a grandchild?"
"A little," Queen Olivia confessed. "I've spent all my adult life bracing myself for their return. But I like it, too. I like it a lot. Crixael is nothing like Denibael was. He's stronger and brighter. Better in every way. Loving. Caring. And he will be a great defense if there are more of them coming. Or other aliens we can't handle on our own."
Dani bent down and picked up an abandoned toy. "No one will stand a chance against him."
"Or against you," Olivia laughed. "Our new way of meeting new aliens has worked wonderfully well so far. No new wars. You're charming everyone's socks off. Space Force is getting a little bored. We might have to disband a whole lot of units. Nothing for them to do anymore."
Dani smiled. "Oh, I think we still need that loaded gun held behind our backs. Mom, I know it took tremendous strength of you to change that approach. I want to thank you for giving my crazy-ass ideas a chance."
"They're not crazy. Not at all. It was I who had been so scared by the Ethereals that first time that I didn't see any way to meet aliens other than shooting them first. It was not the best way. Necessary sometimes, certainly. But now, our first approach will always be the outstretched hand. And maybe our second and our third, too. I think it makes sense. Now, I hear my grandson is a prince?"
"Yep. Well, the Ethereals don't have princes or princesses. They don't know how that works. And I still don't know how most of them procreate. So Crixael just said that his kids would all have real titles. Since they're the offspring of a king. It's his decision. That probably means that our son is the first and only prince the Ethereals have ever had. A crown prince, in fact."
Crixael came towards them, walking softly on the immaculate grass with the sleeping baby in his large hands. "He's been asleep now for what has to be a new record. Over two hours."
"Not bad," Olivia said. "I certainly remember some people who needed feeding every ninety minutes at that age. Of course I won't mention any names, Dai."
"Hey, I liked my milk," Dani said. "If only I'd known that it went straight to my hips."
"Some of us like womanly hips," Crixael said earnestly, not always able to follow jokes between human women.
"And some of us like the manly ones," Dani said and placed on hand on her husband's hard flank. Even now, just looking at him and his supernatural beauty could turn her on in a heartbeat.
Her mother smirked, probably fully aware of the chemistry between them. "I wonder if I may relieve you of my grandchild for a moment, Crixael? I can't stay too long, but I'd just love to carry him a little more."
"Of course," Crixael said. He had been standoffish to Queen Olivia for a little while before the wedding, because he knew that she had killed King Denibael many years ago and he said that she was well known among all Ethereals, that she was the only human they might fear. Then he had gotten to know her, and they had become very good friends.
He carefully placed the little bundle in her arms and smiled. "He always likes being held by you."
Queen Olivia cradled her grandson and started walking slowly across the lawn.
Dani snaked her arm around her husband's waist and pulled him tight. "Seems you're a better parent than your mother was."
He nuzzled her hair. He had insisted that she grow it long again, and she didn't mind it. "We don't know for a fact that it was Benirsheba. That was just a random idea I had. She never indicated it."
"I guess we will never know. You're a fine father anyway."
"And you're an excellent mother. Even I can see that."
She looked at the stars in his eyes. They flickered in every color of the rainbow and, it seemed to her, many more besides. "I almost never lived long enough to become one. You saved my life too many times to count."
"And you saved me from a worse fate: living out my days as an Ethereal."
He kissed her hair and she hugged him to her.
A perfectly harmonic, very beautiful and surprisingly loud cry filled the air, and Queen Olivia turned on her heel and came marching back across the lawn.
Little Crown Prince Nicholas Olivael was awake.
