I couldn’t take it any longer. Abruptly sliding from my stool, I slung my purse over my shoulder. “Uh-huh, sorry. I just need some fresh air.”

Travis’ expression soured, puckering as if I were the one pumping toxic sludge into the atmosphere. “Uh, sure.”

I’m not positive, but I thought I heard him call me rude under his breath as I walked away. Instead of heading to the front door, for some reason I went to the back of the bar and into the women’s bathroom. I couldn’t help but laugh at the thought I’d gone to the bathroom for a breath of fresh air. Girl, you need to stop running to bathrooms!

After fixing my hair in the mirror, checking my texts, and counting to ten a few times, I still didn’t know how to end this whole date. I wanted to sneak by and delete him from my life entirely, but still couldn’t jump over that guilt hurdle. He was a human being, after all. A disgusting human, but one nonetheless. When I resolved to go back out and at least do the polite thing of finishing my drink, I saw the sign on the back of the door.

“Ladies! If you’re on a blind date or with someone you really want to get away from, let us help! Approach any member of staff and ask, ‘Is Lucinda working tonight?’ It’s our code for, ‘Help me, I need to get out of here!’ We’ll do everything we can to help get you away from your date gracefully and without a scene!”

It was printed on a single sheet of paper, but that text pretty much became my holy book. If you can imagine that the roof had opened up to a blinding light shining down on me with a chorus of chubby little pink-cheeked cherubic angels singing, that’s exactly how I felt at that moment. I was on a mission now. Operation Lucinda and Get the Hell Away from Señor Ass Blaster.

Once safely home and a bit numb from two glasses of hastily consumed wine, I stared at the blank setup screen, wondering what in the hell I was actually doing. I’m a writer, sure, but not a blogger. And I’ve certainly never been so full of myself to write about my own personal stuff. Of course, I’d be cloaked in anonymity, which made it a little safer, but it still felt so vain.

The more I thought about it, the more I tried to convince myself it wasn’t. It was an experiment. I was documenting my experiences so that later I could figure out where I went wrong. Not only was it an experiment, it was a place where I could freely vent. There were certainly going to be details about these dates I wasn’t going to share with Anette, Zach, or anyone else close to me.

I fully embraced my new single life. But like training wheels on a bicycle, I needed a little protection before trying to do it all on my own. At least under the guise of the blog, I could at least take any bad date and turn it into a good story.

For all the time it took me to write out my Tinder bio, the name of the blog jumped right into my mind. In thick white font I typed it out.

  Chronicles of a Serial Dater

I began writing my first entry.

I’ve never been one for self-indulgent online journals, but there’s literally no place else to turn. My closest friends are at each other’s throats every time I bring up the idea of dating. I need somewhere to vent!

This will probably last about as long as my knitting phase, half as long as my yoga phase, and we’re not even going to mention my vegan phase.

I should be writing a novel. I should be editing. But instead, I’m starting a blog for no one to read. Yay!

*drum roll please*.... I had a date. For the first time in my adult life, I went on a date.

And he farted. And he talked down to me. And I had to escape out a side exit just to get away....

I hope you enjoyed the first installment of the Chronicles of a Serial Dater series! If you have a second, it’d be awesome if you could leave a review! And while you’re there, make sure to check out the next installments!
