Jeremy didn’t look up.
“What happened to him?”
Helen pulled Jeremy’s hand away from the rag on his cheek but the rag stuck fast. She peeled it away and it came off like Velcro.
“Police whooped him a good one.” She gently pressed down on the bloody wound. Juli thought she could see bone underneath it. He let his head rest against the window and took shallow, ragged breaths.
“Should we go to a hospital? For help?”
Helen stared out the window to the city that was falling around them. “No… No, honey. I do believe we’re on our own now.”
As Juli drove on, she realized the old woman was right.
Acknowledgments
So many people lent me their advice and assistance as I wrote this novel. I’m sure I’ll miss a few, but I want to thank the following:
Sharon Urban, my mother, for putting up with me during the year it took to write it and for being my biggest fan. She taught me to read, introduced me to horror, and turned me into the weirdo I am today. I owe her everything. Everything.
Nathan Faudree for providing invaluable advice and encouragement and being a source of endless inspiration to me over the years.
Jayne & Jan for reading and sharing their feedback.
Nathan Gess for his expertise on airplane crashes, even if I ended up cutting those scenes from the book.
All of the authors at 20BooksTo50K for helping me navigate the high seas of publishing.
Rebecca Frank for her sweet cover art. http://rebeccafrank.design/
Glenn Bontrager for formatting the print and ebook editions and holding my hand through the process. www.sarcopress.com
And especially Max Baldwin for ensuring that “Solomon” could curse like a proper Birmingham bastard.
