  Entulessë ‘Return’, the ship in which Vëantur the Númenórean achieved the first voyage to Middle-earth.

  Entwood Name in Rohan of Fangorn Forest. Enyd Sindarin name for Ents (plural of Onod, see Onodló, Onodrim).

  *Eofor Third son of Brego the second king of Rohan; ancestor of Éomer.

  *éoherë Term used by the Rohirrim for the full muster of their cavalry (for the meaning see 408).

  Eöl The ‘Dark Elf’ of Nan Elmoth, father of Maeglin.

  Éomer Nephew and fosterson of King Théoden; at the time of the War of the Ring Third Marshal of the Mark; after Théoden’s death eighteenth King of Rohan; friend of King Elessar.

  *Éomund (1) Chief captain of the host of the Éothéod at the time of the Ride of Eorl.

  Éomund (2) Chief Marshal of the Mark of Rohan; wedded Théodwyn sister of Théoden; father of Éomer and Éowyn.

  Eönwë One of the mightiest of the Maiar, called the Herald of Manwë; leader of the host of the Valar in the attack on Morgoth at the end of the First Age.

  éored A body of the Riders of the Éothéod.

  Eorl the Young Lord of the Éothéod; rode from his land in the far North to the aid of Gondor against the invasion of the Balchoth; received Calenardhon in gift from Cirion Steward of Gondor; first King of Rohan.   Eorlings The people of Eorl, the Rohirrim; with Anglo-Saxon plural ending, Eorlingas.

  Éowyn Sister of Éomer, wife of Faramir; slayer of the Lord of the Nazgûl in the Battle of the Pelennor Fields.

  *epessë An ‘after-name’ received by one of the Eldar in addition to the given names (essi).

  Ephel Brandir ‘The encircling fence of Brandir’, dwellings of the Men of Brethil upon Amon Obel. The Ephel.

  Ephel Dúath ‘Fence of Shadow’, the mountain-range between Gondor and Mordor.

  Erchamion See Beren (1).

  Erebor An isolated mountain to the east of the northernmost parts of Mirkwood, where was the Kingdom of the Dwarves under the Mountain and the lair of Smaug. The Lonely Mountain.

  Ered Lindon ‘Mountains of Lindon’, another name for Ered Luin.

  Ered Lithui ‘Ash Mountains’, forming the northern border of Mordor.

  Ered Lómin ‘Echoing Mountains’, forming the west-fence of Hithlum. The Echoing Mountains of Lammoth.

  Ered Luin The great mountain-chain (also called Ered Lindon) separating Beleriand from Eriador in the Elder Days, and after the destruction at the end of the First Age forming the north-western coastal range of Middle-earth. Translated the Blue Mountains; called the Western Mountains.

  Ered Mithrin ‘Grey Mountains’, extending from east to west north of Mirkwood.

  Ered Nimrais ‘White-horn Mountains’, the great range from east to west south of the Misty Mountains. The White Mountains.

  Ered Wethrin The great curving mountain-range bordering Anfauglith (Ard-galen) on the west and on the south forming the barrier between Hithlum and West Beleriand. Translated Mountains of Shadow and Shadowy Mountains.

  Eregion ‘Land of Holly’, called by Men Hollin; Noldorin realm founded in the Second Age by Galadriel and Celeborn, in close association with Khazad-dûm; destroyed by Sauron. Hollin.

  Ereinion ‘Scion of Kings’, given name of Gil-galad.

  Erelas Fourth of the beacons of Gondor in Ered Nimrais. (Probably a pre-Númenórean name; although the name is Sindarin in style it has no suitable meaning in that language. ‘It was a green hill without trees, so that neither er - “single” nor las(s) “leaf ” seem applicable.’)

  *Erendis Wife of Tar-Aldarion (‘the Mariner’s Wife’), between whom there was great love that turned to hatred; mother of Tar-Ancalimë. Called the Lady of the Westlands and the White Lady of Emerië; see also Tar-Elestirnë and Uinéniel.

  Eressëa ‘The Lonely Isle’ in the Bay of Eldamar. Tol Eressëa.

  Eriador Lands between the Misty Mountains and the Blue.

  Erkenbrand Rider of Rohan, Master of Westfold and the Horn-burg; under King Éomer Marshal of the West-mark.

  Eru ‘The One’, ‘He that is Alone’: Ilúvatar. (Eru Ilavatar), The One. The Hallow of Eru on the Meneltarma.

  *Eruhantalë ‘Thanksgiving to Eru’, the autumn feast in Númenor.

  *Erukyermë ‘Prayer to Eru’, the spring feast in Númenor.

  *Erulaitalë ‘Praise of Eru’, the midsummer feast in Númenor.

  *Eryn Galen The great forest usually given the translated name Greenwood the Great.

  Eryn Lasgalen ‘Wood of Greenleaves’, name given to Mirk-wood after the War of the Ring.

  *Eryn Vorn ‘Dark Wood’, the great cape on the coast of Minhiriath south of the mouth of the Baranduin.

  Esgalduin The river of Doriath, dividing the forests of Neldoreth and Region and flowing into Sirion.

  *Estelmo Elendur’s esquire, who survived the disaster of the Gladden Fields.

  Estolad The land south of Nan Elmoth in East Beleriand where the Men of the followings of Bëor and Marach dwelt after they had crossed the Blue Mountains.

  Ethir Anduin ‘Outflow of Anduin’, the delta of the Great River in the Bay of Belfalas.

  *Ethraid Engrin Sindarin name (also in singular form Athrad Angren) of the Fords of Isen.

  Evendim See Nenuial.

  Evermind See simbelmynë.

  *Evil Breath A wind out of Angband that brought sickness to Dor-lómin, from which Túrin’s sister Urwen (Lalaith) died.

  Exiles, The The rebellious Noldor who returned to Middle-earth from Aman.

  Faelivrin Name given to Finduilas by Gwindor.

  Fair Folk The Eldar.

  Faithful, The (i) Those Númenóreans who were not estranged from the Eldar and continued to reverence the Valar in the days of Tar-Ancalimon and later kings. (ii) ‘The Faithful’ of the Fourth Age.

  Falas The western coasts of Beleriand, south of Nevrast. Havens of the Falas.

  Falastur ‘Lord of the Coasts’, name of Tarannon, twelfth King of Gondor.

  Falathrim Telerin Elves of the Falas, whose lord was Círdan.

  Fallohides One of the three peoples into which the Hobbits were divided, described in the Prologue (1) to The Lord of the Rings.

  Fangorn (i) The oldest of the Ents and the guardian of Fangorn Forest. Translated Treebeard. (ii) The Forest of Fangorn, at the south-eastern end of the Misty Mountains, about the upper waters of the rivers Entwash and Limlight.. See Entwood.

  Faramir (I) Younger son of Ondoher King of Gondor; slain in battle with the Wainriders.

  Faramir (2) Younger son of Denethor II, Steward of Gondor; Captain of the Rangers of Ithilien; after the War of the Ring Prince of Ithilien and Steward of Gon

  Far Harad See Harad.

  Faroth See Taur-en-Faroth.

  Fëanor Eldest son of Finwë, half-brother of Fingolfin and Finarfin; leader of the Noldor in their rebellion against the Valar; maker of the Silmarils and of the palantíri. Sons of Fëanor; Fëanorians. Fëanorian lamps.

  Fëanturi ‘Masters of Spirits’, the Valar Námo (Mandos) and Irmo (Lórien). See Nurufantur, Olofantur.

  Felagund The name by which Finrod was known after the establishment of Nargothrond; for references see Finrod. Doors of Felagund.

  Felaróf The horse of Eorl the Young. Fell Winter The winter of the year 495 from the rising of the Moon, after the fall of Nargothrond.

  Fenmarch Region of Rohan west of the Mering Stream.

  Ferny A family of Men in Bree. Bill Ferny.

  Field of Celebrant Partial translation of Parth Celebrant. The grasslands between the rivers Silverlode (Celebrant) and Limlight; in restricted sense of Gondor, the land between the lower Limlight and Anduin. Field of Celebrant is often used of the Battle of the Field of Celebrant, the victory of Cirion and Eorl over the Balchoth in Third Age 2510, references to which are included here. (Celebrant).

  Fili Dwarf of the House of Durin; nephew and companion of Thorin Oakenshield; slain in the Battle of Five Armies.

  Finarfin Third son of Finwë, the younger of Fëanor’s half-brothers; remained in Aman after the Flight of the Noldor and ruled the remnant of his people in Tirion; father of Finrod, Orodreth, Angrod, Aegnor, and Galadriel. Other references are to Finarfin’s house, kin, people, or children.

  Finduilas (1) Daughter of Orodreth, loved by Gwindor; captured in the sack of Nargothrond, killed by Orcs at the Crossings of Teiglin and buried in the Haudh-en-Elleth.

  Finduilas (2) Daughter of Adrahil, Prince of Dol Amroth; wife of Denethor II, Steward of Gondor, mother of Boromir and Faramir.

  Fingolfin Second son of Finwë, the elder of Fëanor’s half-brothers; High King of the Noldor in Beleriand, dwelling in Hithlum; slain by Morgoth in single combat; father of Fingon, Turgon, and Aredhel. House of, people of, Fingolfin; son of Fingolfin, Turgon.

  Fingon Eldest son of Fingolfin; High King of the Noldor in Beleriand after his father; slain by Gothmog in the Nirnaeth Arnoediad; father of Gil-galad. Son of Fingon, Gil-galad.

  Finrod Eldest son of Finarfin; founder and King of Nargothrond, whence his name Felagund ‘cave-hewer’; died in defence of Beren in the dungeons of Tol-in-Gaurhoth. Finrod Felagund; Felagund. [Rejected name of Finarfin.]

  Finwë King of the Noldor in Aman; father of Fëanor, Fingolfin, and Finarfin; slain by Morgoth at Formenos.

  *Firien-dale Cleft in which the Mering Stream rose.

  *Firienholt Another name for the Firien Wood, of the same meaning.

  Firien Wood In full Halifirien Wood; in Ered Nimrais about the Mering Stream and on the slopes of the Halifirien. Also called Firienholt; the Whispering Wood; and the Wood of Anwar.

  Firth of Drengist See Drengist.

  flet Old English word meaning ‘floor’; a talan.

  Folcwine Fourteenth King of Rohan, great-grandfather of Théoden; reconquered the west-march of Rohan between Adorn and Isen.

  Folde A region of Rohan about Edoras, part of the King’s Lands.

  Ford of Carrock Ford over Anduin between the Carrock and the east bank of the river; but probably here referring to the Old Ford, where the Old Forest Road crossed Anduin, south of the Ford of Carrock.

  Fords of Isen Crossing of the Isen by the great Númenórean road linking Gondor and Arnor; called in Sindarin Athrad Angren and Ethraid Engrin; see also Battles of the Fords of Isen.

  Fords of the Poros Crossing of the River Poros on the Harad Road.

  Forest River River flowing from Ered Mithrin through northern Mirkwood and into the Long Lake.

  Fornost ‘Northern Fortress’, in full Fornost Erain ‘Norbury of the Kings’, later seat of the Kings of Arnor on the North Downs, after the abandonment of Annúminas.

  *Forthwini Son of Marhwini; leader of the Éothéod in the time of King Ondoher of Gondor.

  *Forweg Man of Dor-lómin, captain of the outlaw-band (Gaurwaith) that Túrin joined; slain by Túrin.

  Fréaláf Tenth King of Rohan, nephew of King Helm Hammerhand.

  Freca A vassal of King Helm Hammerhand, slain by him.

  Frodo Frodo Baggins, Hobbit of the Shire; the Ringbearer in the War of the Ring.

  Frumgar Leader of the northward migration of the Éothéod out of the Vales of Anduin.

  *Galadhon Father of Celeborn.

  Galadhrim The Elves of Lórien.

  *Galador First Lord of Dol Amroth, son of Imrazôr the Númenórean and the Elf Mithrellas.

  Galadriel Daughter of Finarfin; one of the leaders of the Noldorin rebellion against the Valar; wife of Celeborn, with whom she remained in Middle-earth after the end of the First Age; Lady of Lothlórien. Called Lady of the Noldor, Lady of the Golden Wood, the White Lady; see also Al(a)táriel, Artanis, Nerwen.

  *Galathil Brother of Celeborn and father of Nimloth the mother of Elwing.

  Galdor Called the Tall; son of Hador Goldenhead and Lord of Dor-lómin after him; father of Húrin and Huor; slain at Eithel Sirion.

  Gamgee A family of Hobbits of the Shire. See Elanor, Hamfast, Samwise.

  *Gamil Zirak Called the Old; Dwarf smith, master of Telchar of Nogrod.

  Gandalf One of the Istari (Wizards), member of the Fellowship of the Ring. Gandalf (‘Elf of the Wand’) was his name among Northern Men; Part 3 §§ III and IV passim, Part 4 §§ II and III passim. See Olórin, Mithrandir, Incánus, Tharkûn, Greyhame.

  Gap of Rohan, the Gap The opening, some 20 miles wide, between the last end of the Misty Mountains and the north-thrust spur of the White Mountains, through which flowed the river Isen. Gap of Calenardhon.

  Gate of the Noldor See Annon-in-Gelydh.

  *Gates of Mordor See Morannon.

  *Gaurwaith The outlaw-band on the western borders of Doriath that Túrin joined, and of which he became the captain. Translated Wolf-men.

  Gelmir Noldorin Elf, who with Arminas came upon Tuor at Annon-in-Gelydh and afterwards went to Nargothrond to warn Orodreth of its peril.

  *Gethron Man of Húrin’s household who with Grithnir accompanied Túrin to Doriath and afterwards returned to Dorlómin.

  Ghân-buri-Ghân Chieftain of the Drúedain or ‘Wild Men’ of Drúadan Forest. Ghân.

  Gil-galad ‘Star of Radiance’, the name by which Ereinion son of Fingon was known. After the death of Turgon he became the last High King of the Noldor in Middle-earth, and remained in Lindon after the end of the First Age; leader with Elendil of the Last Alliance of Elves and Men and slain with him in combat with Sauron.   *Gilmith Sister of Galador, first Lord of Dol Amroth.

  Gilrain River of Lebennin in Gondor flowing into the Bay of Belfalas west of Ethir Anduin.

  Gimilkhâd Younger son of Ar-Gimilzôr and Inzilbêth; father of Ar-Pharazôn, last King of Númenor.

  *Gimilzagar Second son of Tar-Calmacil. Gimli Dwarf of the House of Durin, son of Glóin; one of the Fellowship of the Ring.

  Gladden River flowing down from the Misty Mountains and joining Anduin at the Gladden Fields; translation of Sindarin Sîr Ninglor.

  Gladden Fields Partial translation of Sindarin Loeg Ningloron; the great stretches of reed and iris (gladden) where the Gladden River joined Anduin.

  Glaurung The first of the Dragons of Morgoth; in the Dagor Bragollach, the Nirnaeth Arnoediad, and the sack of Nargothrond; cast his spell upon Túrin and Nienor; slain by Túrin at Cabed-en-Aras.
