Pay Up and Die
Page 17
How many of us are unemployed or under-employed? How many of us have family members or friends in similar circumstances? Watch the news. Read the papers.
My fears escalated to doomsday scenarios. Instead of worldwide famine or zombie viruses, I was afraid of being unable to fulfill my responsibilities as a father, a husband, a provider. A man.
This story was birthed in my turmoil. I knew it was a real horror story. A story that people could relate to. A story that means something more than characters running into problems in order to come out the other side. Perhaps it could serve as a cautionary story, so that others will take steps to avoid such tragedies.
In thinking through these horrific scenarios, questions emerged. What would I do to save my family? How far would I go to protect them? What lines would I be willing to cross? I won’t divulge such intimate details here. But these are the dilemmas that face Michael Wright. He is a non-descript American who works hard for his family. Yet it isn’t enough. He finds himself one emergency from disaster. Sound familiar? He is forced into making choices that we find uncomfortable as we read the story tucked safely in our beds. Choices that might be closer to us than we think.
But what about you? What would you do? Are you willing to hope for the best while turning a blind eye to the potential cliff looming over your loved ones? Have you prepared for the ultimatum, the moment God looks you in the eye to see what you are made of? Can you do the unthinkable when it seems that there are no other options?
This is life. And it is horrific.
Unfortunately for Michael Wright and so many of us, the story is not over.

P.S. I had so much fun writing this book and digging through the unknown to find answers. I hope you will join us in Book 2 to see what lies ahead.
I feel safer with you by my side.
