“Thanks, babe.” Sly looked up at her and kissed his wife’s hand.

His wife. Three days ago, Maura and I had said our vows at the courthouse. She had her mother and Beverly stand up with her. Switch and Sly had stood up for me. Sly promised me a huge wedding reception when things felt safe again. Maybe we’d take him up on it. For now, the ring on my finger and Maura’s was the only thing we needed. She was upstairs now, helping Mo set the table for the feast she’d planned when we were through.

“The intel’s as solid as it gets,” Dex said as soon as Scarlett shut the basement door behind her. It wasn’t a secret, but this was church now. Only patched members would take up the vote.

“It’s the Rebels backed by the Diaz Cartel,” Sly said. “Londo’s guys confirmed it. The center can’t hold. The men loyal to Pagano have flipped sides. And now they’ve changed all the rules.”

The Hellz Rebels M.C. had broken a code as old as the M.C.s themselves. Women and children had been in the club that night. We were in a new world.

“It ain’t just Green Bluff,” Ford said. “There’s been trouble in Grand City.” Grand City, Michigan was one of our other charters.

“Then we pull Sawyer in on this,” Sly said. Long ago, Sawyer sat at this table with us. Now he was prez of the Michigan chapter. Word was, this was a coordinated attack. Someone took a shot at Sawyer when he was coming out of one of the club-owned gyms near Detroit. And in Emerald Point, our Florida chapter, we were getting word that a car bomb exploded near the Wolf Den down there.

“It’s bigger than we all thought,” I said.

“It’s a message. It’s a declaration,” Sly said. “No one is safe.”

“We fight back,” Gunn said. “We fight back hard.”

I knew what Sly was thinking. Most of the men at this table hadn’t seen a club war like what we were facing. Maybe we’d grown too comfortable. That all changed now.

“Judd was a bigger part of this than we realized,” Sly said. “And I played right into their hands. They knew I’d call for a lockdown. They wanted us ... all of us ... in one place. I won’t make that mistake again. I let you down.”

My heart twisted. We all knew what he was really saying. He felt like he’d failed us. But I also knew no man at this table believed that.

“Put it to a vote,” Sly said. “Dex is ready to step in. He’s always been ready.”

Dex’s face turned to ash. He knew Sly was going to do this. But hearing him say it was something else.

“I vote no,” Dex said. “You’ve led this club for fifteen years. Brought us out of the darkness. Made us stronger. And it didn’t stop here. Every Great Wolves charter across the country is reaping the benefits of your leadership. So we’re being tested. Shit’s going to get harder. Darker. But there’s nobody I’d rather have holding that gavel to lead us through it now. You have my vote of confidence.” He knocked his fist on the table and turned his eyes to Charlie.

“Hell, yes,” Charlie said. He set off a chain reaction.

  “Hell, yeah.”

  “Fuck, yeah!”

  “Sly’s my prez!”

To a man, the vote was yes. Then it came to me. I locked eyes with my prez and nodded. “That gavel belongs in your hand as long as you’re willing to hold it,” I said. “None of us here have a single doubt.”

Sly clenched his jaw. His eyes glistened with the emotion he wouldn’t show. He took the gavel, running his fingers along the wooden handle. “God help me,” he said. “And let me earn your faith all over again. God help us all. This is war.”

He banged the gavel hard. It echoed across the room like a gunshot. I didn’t know what was to come. None of us did. But I’d never been prouder of the patch I wore.

“Enough of that for now,” Sly said. “It’s also a time for celebration as we welcome a new member to the family. I never thought I’d see the day. And I’m so damn proud of you for getting over yourself long enough to do the right thing, Angel. Maura’s special. Take care of that one. And she’s damn lucky too.”

Cheers rose around the table and my heart swelled. I would have married her anyway. But it meant the world to me that the men I called family had grown to love her too.

She was waiting for me upstairs. She smiled at me as I walked into the kitchen and went to her. We’d met darkness downstairs and would in the days to come. But Maura was the light for me. She was everything I had worth fighting for.

Every patched member of the club found their wives. Sly slid his arms around Scarlett and kissed her neck. Dex went to Ava. She kissed him hard and deep. Gunn was soon to be married too. His girl Brenna sat at the table and he moved to stand behind her. She looked up at him, dark knowledge and love in her eyes.

I took Maura’s hand and led her out to the back porch. Sly had a breathtaking view of the mountains and the stars had come out.

“Everything go okay down there?” she asked.

“Sly offered to give up the gavel.”

  Maura gasped. “You didn’t …”

“No,” I said. I slid my arms around her waist. She stood with her back to me, her head resting on my shoulder. “He belongs at the head of that table.”

“He’s a good man,” she said. “And so are you. You all are.”

“You’re something else,” I said, smiling down at her. “The world’s crashing down around our ears and you’re solid.”

“I trust you,” she said. “And I trust the club. You’ve shown me what kind of men you are. Plus, it’s not like I had much of a choice. You said you knew I was yours the minute you met me. Well, it was like that for me too. I was just a hell of a lot more stubborn about it.”

I nipped at her ear. “That’s what I like best about you, baby. Taming you has been half the fun.”

She reached up, taking a playful swipe at me. “Taming me? I doubt it. You’re the wild one.”

I laughed. She turned in my arms. Her body curved against mine and I stirred. I wanted her. Badly. We were staying here tonight. Sly had twenty acres. This land had been part of a cattle ranch years ago. There was the main house, but he also had four bunk houses where the hands used to live. Maura and I had claimed one. Scarlett made it homey with a four-poster bed and farm-style furnishings. Wicked visions flashed through my head of tying Maura to that bed later tonight. Oh yeah. I’d show her just how I meant to tame her.

“I love you so much, baby,” I whispered. She took my hand and we started down the path to the guest house. Curtis and Josh kept watch tonight. They took their posts along the path and nodded as we passed.

Just before we got to the door, I grabbed Maura and twirled her around. She gasped. “What?”

With one quick movement, I had her off her feet. She squealed with delight. “Might as well do this properly,” I said. She buried her face in my shoulder as I pushed the door open with my foot and carried my bride across the threshold.

“Oh my God,” Maura gasped. “It’s perfect!”

It was. The freshly polished wood floors glowed with flickering, soft candlelight. The bed had been turned down and covered with white rose petals. There was a bottle of champagne chilling on the table with a card propped against it.

It was from Sly and Scarlett. It read, “Congratulations. Welcome to the club. You’re among family.”

I set Maura down. She got misty-eyed reading the card. “Oh, Angel,” she said. “It’s so crazy. Like you said, the world might be falling down around our ears, but I don’t care. As long as you’re with me. I don’t care. You make me happy. For the rest of my life, I want to make you happy too.”

I slid my arms around her waist and kissed her. “You already do.”

“Take me to bed,” she said, letting out a sultry laugh that heated my blood. “Make me yours forever.”

“That’s the plan, baby,” I said, lifting her in my arms again. I set her down on the bed. She wore a plain white dress and cowboy boots. She kicked those off and slid the straps of her dress down her shoulders. I gro
aned with lust. She wasn’t wearing a bra. No panties either.

“Fuck,” I said. “You’ve been like that all day?”

She bit her lip and nodded. My little wildcat. Oh yeah, I’d have so much fun taming her tonight. She reached for me, sliding my zipper down. She found me hard, ready, bursting to fill her.

“My Angel,” she whispered, spreading her legs. She opened for me just like a flower. “It’s time for you to come home.”

I did. Over and over again that night and all the way to dawn. My wife. My love. My everything. The world could burn around us, but I’d be her angel and she was my heaven.
