“The kinda nigga that you would mess around with?” Trell asked, feeling a little flattered. Once again, his eyes followed the curves of Nikki’s body. “Is that so?”

“I mean, yeah,” Nikki said. “But not if you doin’ shit like this. I mean, this is messed up. Why are they even lookin’ for Breon?”

Trell glanced back at the staircase once more before he answered. “’Cause he fucked over Dante, the smaller one, back in the day,” he explained. “So bad that the nigga got sent to prison over it. He wanna get that nigga Breon so bad and shit, it’s fucked up. They gon’ kill that nigga when they get him.”

Nikki purposely angled her eyes toward Trell’s bulge, knowing that anytime she put that kind of attention on a man, he was suddenly easier to work with. Her ulterior motive was getting his gun, but she just needed him to get soft enough to come closer. It was increasingly becoming obvious to Nikki that Trell was weak, especially when it came to a woman.

“Look, I got a idea, nigga,” Nikki said. She glanced past him and toward the staircase as she stuck her butt out further with her posture. “You work with me and stuff, and I’ll let you get what you want.”

“What you mean what I want?” Trell asked, starting to feel a little excited. He could feel his dick tingling in his jeans. “What you mean?”

“You know,” Nikki asked. She then looked down at her thighs. “I mean, you got more swag and shit then them other two niggas. I swear… I don’t know nothin’ about what is goin’ on. That Breon nigga…I only let him hit and sucked on his dick. I swear, I ain’t know nothin’ else.”

“Is that right?” Trell asked, his attention zooming in on Nikki’s lips. “You like to suck dick, huh?”

Nikki nodded. “Hmm, hmm,” she answered. “If you come over here real quick, I can show you before them other two niggas get back up here.”

Trell thought about it for a moment. It had been a minute since he’d smashed a chick that was as thick as this chick. Every bit of her proposal was tempting, especially since he really didn’t have anything against Breon himself.

Against his better judgment, Trell stepped forward. With a smile on his face, he began to unbuckle his pants. Nikki leaned forward, willing to do whatever it took to get out of there. She was going to wait for the moment when this dude was as vulnerable as possible – with his dick hanging out of his pants – and reach for his gun. She was willing to do anything to save herself from the situation.

Just as Trell was pulling his manhood out of his pants, he could hear the footsteps of his uncle and Dante coming back up the steps. Frantically, Nikki jumped back further onto the bed as Trell pushed his dick back into his pants. Just as he was stepping back and zipping up his pants, Edric had stepped into the room. Before either he or Dante could say anything, Trell had grabbed their attention.

“Nigga, what the fuck is you doin’?” Edric asked his nephew. “I know you wasn’t about to do nothin’ with this chick, was you?”

Trell shook his head. “Naw,” he lied. “Just noticed that my fly was open.”

“Nigga, why you lyin’?” Edric asked. “I know you was about to pull you dick out. What she tell you? She was gon’ suck on that little dick for you?”

“Man,” Trell said, turning side to side.

“Nigga, yeah, I know,” Edric said. “Your daddy told me that his only boy got a little dick. And now you think you bout to fuck this hoe right here with that little dick. You not even gon be able to reach past them ass cheeks, nigga.” He looked down at the bulge in Trell’s pants and shook his head. He chuckled. “Little dick niggas.”

“Call that nigga Breon,” Dante stepped forward and said.

“Y’all ain’t let me get my phone before I left home,” Nikki said. “I was goin’ back to my bedroom to grab it when y’all came in. I ain’t got it with me.”

“What?” Dante asked, surprised. “You tellin’ me you ain’t got your fuckin’ phone with you?” Not even allowing her to answer, Dante tapped the disappointed Edric’s shoulder. “Check her pockets.”

Edric stepped forward and patted Nikki down. It didn’t take him long to see that this chick was not wearing a bra. He took an extra moment to fondle her breasts, smiling and chuckling under his breath as she sat there nervously. He then checked her pockets and looked at Dante. “Naw, she ain’t got nothin’ on her,” he said. “She not even wearin’ a bra.”

“Fuck,” Dante said, realizing that he’d have to change the plan. “Fuck all this, I ain’t about to be here all night with her.”

“And we can’t leave this nigga here,” Edric said, slapping his nephew’s head. “You know how little dick niggas be. All she gotta do is tell him that she gon’ suck on his little dick or somethin’ and he gon’ do somethin’ stupid. Prolly gon’ get his gun taken from him or some shit.”

“Yeah, I see,” Dante said, shaking his head. “Well, Edric, I guess you gon’ have to stay here with her.”

“How long y’all gon’ have me here?” Nikki asked. “I told you what I already know, so why are y’all even try’na hold me. I don’t even know Breon like y’all think I know him. I already told you.”

“Shut the fuck up, bitch,” Dante said. “And I’mma keep you as long as I fuckin’ feel like, until this nigga Breon come up. I wonder how he gon’ react when he find out that we got yo big booty self. But you just the side chick, so he might not lift a finger.”

Inside, Nikki was shaking her head. She knew that she wasn’t Breon’s chick, but Breon was too upstanding. She could see his character in his eyes when he’d helped her upstairs at Wayne’s house after the fight. There was no way that he’d allow these men to hold onto her, even though she had nothing to do with what was going on.

“I told you,” Nikki said. “I’m not even his side chick. We just fucked around a couple times over the weekend and stuff, that’s all.”

“Yeah, right,” Dante said. “I can already look at you and tell you suck a mean dick. We gon’ keep you here and get in touch with that nigga Breon.” He looked at Edric. “Gimme the keys to the van and me and Trell can go back to the house and get rid of the hoes over there. We can come back over here after. That’d be cool?”

“Yeah,” Edric answered, nodding. He looked at Nikki and smiled. “It’d be a pleasure to stay here with this sexy little thing.”

Dante nodded his head and headed out of the room. Still looking at his nephew, Edric shook his head. He slapped Trell across the back of the head. “Get your little dick self outta here, nigga,” he said.

Feeling shamed and exposed, Trell kept his eyes to the ground as he walked out of the room and headed downstairs. Dante followed. “We’ll be right back,” he said. “And make sure she don’t go nowhere.”

Nikki listened as the two men headed downstairs and walked out of the back door. She could hear the door open and close, then the sound of their feet crunching against the snow in the backyard. The house was suddenly very quiet as she looked into the eyes of the big man standing before her.

“You’ll be okay,” Edric said. “We not gon’ hurt you. Just help us get this nigga Breon and everything gon’ be okay. You can go on with your life like everything is good and shit. And don’t nobody gotta know that you was even here.”

“But what about my family?” Nikki asked, thinking of her mother and cousins and other family members. “If they don’t hear from me in a couple days and stuff, you know they gon’ call the police and they gon’ come lookin’ for me.”

“Okay,” Edric said, heading out of the room. “They not gon’ find you, trust me. They just gon’ have to look.” Edric reached in and flipped the bedroom light out. “Just sit back and chill.”

The door shut and the room was nearly pitch black, except for the light shining in through the window. Even though the skies above Chicago were covered with a thick layer of clouds, moonlight still broke through. Hearing the man in the hallway pull a chair up and sit down, Nikki waited a few moments before she slid out of the bed. She
first went over to the window and looked down, hoping that a protruding part of the first floor would have a roof just below the window. Quickly, she saw that this was not the case.

“Shit,” Nikki said when she looked out at the flat snow of the backyard. She then looked out of the second window, which was on the side of the house. Again, she saw that there was no escape. After briefly looking in the door on the opposite side of the room, hoping that it would lead to basement steps, she saw that it was only a closet, Nikki sat back down on the bed. Her heart sank as she realized there was no way out of her situation.

Nikki waited for about what felt like an hour before she built up the nerve to step up to the bedroom door. There, she could hear the man out in the hallway, snoring. She knew this was her chance to call Breon. At this point, he was her only way out of here. There was no doubt in her mind that he’d come running when he’d heard that whoever he’d been having problems with had mistaken her for his chick.

To be prepared to play things off, Nikki lay down in the bed. She tried her hardest to not sneeze, as the red comforter on top of the bed was covered with a light layer of dust. With her mouth wedged between the two pillows at the head of the bed, she called Breon. With each ring, she felt her heart beat harder. At this point, she didn’t know what was going to happen. However, the several scenarios that passed through her mind were not looking good.

“Answer, Breon,” Nikki said softly. “Fuckin’ answer the phone.”

  CHAPTER 3

When a strong wind slammed into the bedroom window, Trina found herself coming out of her deep sleep. Blurry-eyed and a bit confused, her eyes opened and soon adjusted to the dark. Out of instinct, she reached across the bed. She felt nothing but space, causing her to jump up.

“What the fuck?” Trina asked. With her hair hanging wildly from her head, she looked around the room. “Where the fuck is Breon?” she asked herself.

Still tired from her deep sleep, Trina leaned back into her pillow. Thoughts raced through her mind as she thought about the various things her older sister Tamar had gone through with her dude. As much as Trina wanted to believe that Breon wouldn’t cheat on her, she couldn’t help but find herself coming right back around to that very same thought. Something was just not right about this. She didn’t know if she should feel suspicious or worried. Before she’d gone to bed, Breon had mentioned going to talk to the Dante guy about whatever problem he had.

“What time is it?” Trina asked herself, knowing that the time would dictate her feelings.

After thinking for a moment about where she’d put her cell phone, Trina went after it and saw that it was going on 2 o’clock. She was instantly worried, trying to figure out what kind of talk Breon would be having with the Dante guy.

Trina tried to put her thoughts elsewhere as she lay in the dark. However, her efforts were useless. Two scenarios took over in her mind: that Breon had either been hurt or that Breon had stopped by some chick’s house. She lay there for several minutes in thought. She eventually came to the point that she couldn’t take it anymore.

Trina slid out of bed, her toes pressing into the carpet ever so gently. She wanted to see if maybe Breon had come home and fallen asleep in the living room so as to not wake her up. There were times, especially when Breon had been working a later shift down at Johnson & Pearl, that he would come home and sleep out in the living room.

With the apartment very quiet, Trina headed out into the living room. When she turned on the lights, she found that the apartment was indeed empty. At this point, she couldn’t help it anymore. She had to call Breon to see where he was and why he hadn’t come home yet. If he wasn’t home by the time she went to work, she’d call the police when she got off and try to file a missing person report. Just as she thought about this, she remembered that an adult needed to be missing for 72 hours before a missing person report could be filed.

Trina rushed back to the bedroom and grabbed her phone. “I’m ‘bout to call this nigga and see where he is,” she said to herself. “’Cause this just don’t make no sense. I swear, if he layin’ up with some chick, it’s gon’ be so over. I don’t care what Monique say.”

Trina called Breon, listening to the phone ring. When there was no answer, she dropped her phone back onto the bed and sat down on the edge. She buried her face in her hands before rising again. “Okay, fuck it,” she said. “I’m just not gon’ worry about it. I swear, this nigga betta not cause no shit to come home and affect me. I don’t got time for none of that kinda stuff right now.”

Trina eventually pulled the sheets back up over her and began to work her way back to sleep. Just as she felt her eyelids getting heavy, she could hear keys at the door. She instantly woke up and looked toward the bedroom door. Soon enough, the light from the hallway outside the apartment shined into the living room and crawled down the bedroom hallway as the front door opened and closed.

Trina lay in bed, expecting that Breon was going to come straight to the bedroom to check on her. After a few minutes, it became obvious that was clearly not on his mind. Seeing this, Trina slid out of the bed once more and headed out into the hallway.

Breon heard Trina walk up behind him as he stood in the kitchen, drinking a glass of water.

  “Well, hello,” Trina said.

Breon quickly picked up on the attitude in her voice, knowing that he’d purposely ignored her phone call when he was standing in Ray’s living room. “Hey,” he replied.

“I called you,” Trina said, stepping out into the light. Her arms were folded over her chest, expecting an answer without specifically coming out and asking a question.

“Yeah,” Breon said. “I was finishin’ up talkin’ to the nigga when you called me.” He chose his words carefully, as he still didn’t want Trina to know everything about what was going on. There was no doubt in his mind that she’d take the situation too harshly and maybe make a run for it – maybe running back to stay with her mother – therefore ruining his plans to take her down to the Smokey Mountains and propose. “I thought about callin’ you back when I was out in the truck and shit and on my way back over here.” He smiled. “But I figured that you’d still be up when I got back.”

Not wanting to come across as suspicious or insecure, Trina watched her tone. “So, what happened, Breon?” she asked. “You was gone for a while. I swear, I was startin’ to think that somethin’ had went wrong or somethin’.”

Putting the rim of the glass up to his lips to take the last sip, Breon chuckled under his breath. Something going wrong was surely an understatement.

“Naw,” Breon said. “Ain’t nothin’ go wrong. I picked up Ray real quick, and the two of us went over and talked to that nigga Dante.”

“Yeah,” Trina said, stepping into the kitchen more, “and what he say? Is he still mad at you? Why he go over to Wayne’s house if he had a problem with you?”

“It’s all just some stupid bullshit,” Breon explained. “Like I told you, this Dante nigga is petty. He talkin’ ‘bout some money that I owe him and stuff from way back, like five years ago before he went to jail. I don’t even know what the fuck he talkin’ about.”

“So, this is one of those people from when you was out in the streets and stuff?” Trina asked. “Where you go talk to him at?”

“Actually,” Breon said, lying, “he live just a few streets over from where Wayne stay, you know?”

“Naw, not really,” Trina said. “I don’t really know what is back up in there. All I know is that once you got back so far, you run into some train tracks and stuff.”

“Exactly,” Breon said. “He stay back there and stuff. Shit is fucked up back there… Talk about Chiraq and shit.”

For some reason, Trina could feel that Breon was stalling in his response. She wanted concrete answers. “So, Breon,” she said, more forcefully, “what’s gonna happen with this Dante dude?”

Breon wanted to curse so badly, but he knew that he had to keep his calm. “That’s why I took Ray wi
th me,” he explained. “’Cause I ain’t want nothin’ to pop off with the dude. I told him that I didn’t have nothin’ to do with whatever deal went bad with Pablo. So, shit, the nigga is just shit out of luck if you ask me. I can’t give him money I don’t even have…money that I don’t even owe him and shit.”

“Yeah, but do he understand that?” Trina asked.

“Don’t worry about all that,” Breon said. “We ain’t gotta worry about this nigga no more.”

“Breon, what are you not tellin’ me?” Trina asked. This time, her voice sounded more forceful. “I mean, you seem a little shook up or somethin’, like somethin’ happened.”

Breon looked into Trina’s eyes as he leaned against the kitchen counter. “I mean, shit got a little heated and stuff,” he said, “but we kept it grown man and shit. Wasn’t nobody fightin’ or nothin’ like that.”

“So, you tellin’ me that you and Ray went and talked to this dude in the middle of the night, over there, back up beyond where Wayne stay and stuff, and you ain’t go up in there with no guns or nothin’ like that?” Trina asked, trying to connect some dots.

“Trina, you know I’m done with that life,” Breon said. “But you know that nigga, Ray. I told him don’t bring no extra shit, so we ain’t gotta worry about fuckin’ up some shit and goin’ to jail or nothin’ like that, but you know how he is. He gon’ do what he wanna do. I know he had some heat on him, but I swear that it ain’t come to that. I swear to you, Trina. I can tell you worried.” Breon stepped forward and talked softly, as he was tired and ready to lie down. “We went over there and talked, and I told him how I knew that he could get in touch with Pablo if he wanna know whatever happened to whatever money he was thinking that I would have for whatever reason. I mean, that’s the best answer I got for him because I don’t even know why he think I was involved on that shit, as well as him gettin’ caught up by the police. I told him and shit, that was all on Pablo.”
