“I have no doubt,” Ava said. “But thanks for the heads up.”

With that, she sent her fist flying into Candy’s face. The witch hunter fell back down with a dull thud, her eyes closing.

“Ouch,” Ava complained as she massaged her hand while she ran back to the motel room.

Once she had cleared the trees, she forced herself to walk at a normal pace. She swept her eyes across the area as she moved. There didn’t seem to be too many people up and about yet.

“Where the hell have you been?” Thomas demanded the moment she stepped through the door.

“I went out to get something to eat,” Ava replied. “And ran into….”

“A witch hunter?” Thomas said in a panic.

“I took care of it,” Ava told him quickly.

He looked at her carefully. “What does that mean?”

Ava shot him a glare. “I didn’t kill her. She’s unconscious, lying somewhere in the trees just outside the motel. We have to make some decisions quickly.”

The weight of their dangerous situation settled over them. Thomas reached out, and Ava stepped into his arms. They clung to each other feeling their passion flaming. Their lips parted as they embraced, and their bodies pressed together. Ava struggled to regain her composure and reluctantly pulled away.

“Are we staying together?” she asked, trying to tell herself she was okay with either choice. “Or are we going to part ways?”

Ava found it hard to read Thomas’s expression. It betrayed nothing. The only thing she noticed was how sad his blue eyes looked. His scar was bright on his pale face.

“Thomas?” Ava asked again, fearful of what his answer would be. Thomas finally looked up and met her searching gaze.

“I want us to stay together,” Thomas said. “But do you want the same thing?”

“How can we stay together, Thomas?” Ava asked dejectedly. “How can we stay together if we don’t even trust each other?”

“I may not have always trusted you,” Thomas said. “But I do now.”

  “How can I be sure?”

Thomas looked deeply into her eyes. He reached into his shirt and pulled out the metal amulet that protected him from her magic. He looked at it for a moment. He removed it from around his neck and placed it on the table between them.

“I won’t need that anymore,” Thomas said fervently. “As long as I’m with you.”

Ava stared at the amulet lying on the table. She looked back up at Thomas.

“I know where the Akkadians are hiding,” Ava said, remembering her father’s last whispered words to her. “Will you come with me?”

Thomas nodded once. “Of course,” he said tenderly.

She reached out, and he took her hand.
