Wrath (Seven Deadlies MC)
Page 16
Fury grit his teeth so hard he thought they’d crack, but Ox had a point.
If the Blazin’ Eagles caught wind that they knew who their mole was, they would be gone before Fury could even blink, let alone get them back to the clubhouse.
“Okay. Okay, you’re right, but I'm not letting anyone touch one hair on her head, Ox-,” He stopped when Ox squeezed his shoulder.
Rayna’s bedroom door opened slowly and Green popped his head in.
“Um, I want best friend time. Will you guys go away?”
Fury couldn’t help but smile.
Green couldn’t be the rat- could he?
His affection for Rayna was so real, so easy, no one would ever question it.
Or would we?
Fury knew that even thinking that Green could be the rat would be enough to crush his brother’s feelings, but if it were the other way around, he knew that anyone in the fucking clubhouse would be a suspect.
Including him.
The Original Seven- him, Ox, Limit, Slayer, Prettyboy, Rider, and Green- they couldn’t be the rat. Fury felt it in his weary bones, felt it in his gut.
The prospects were the only two newcomers, and either one of them could be the leak.
That was where him and Ox needed to focus their attention, but again, no one could be counted out just yet.
"Sure, I was just getting ready to sit down, maybe eat or something.”
Green didn't even seem to realize that Fury was ready to pounce at any moment if he deemed it necessary.
Green sauntered in and joined her, his fingers wrapping around hers.
"I don't know if you can hear me, but you were a total bad ass today! Prettyboy won't stop talking about how you took out three Eagles all on your own. I'm a little jealous I wasn't there to see it though, I won't lie."
Rayna didn't stir, but that didn't stop Green from smiling.
"Fury over here is hovering like a mother hen. You must have given him some good full-penny," Green said with a snicker.
"Really? She's laid up with a gunshot wound, and you're talking to her about sex?"
Green frowned, as if his feelings were injured.
"That's literally all anyone around here talks about. Obviously I'm proud of her for gettin' some. What kind of best friend would I be if I didn't at least mention it?"
Green was staring at Fury as if he'd just asked him the absolute dumbest question in the world.
Ox snorted and gestured for Fury to follow him out of the room.
Fury narrowed his eyes as Green sat down beside Rayna and began to read her a very graphic article online about…penile implants?
Green is so fucking weird…
“Alright, I’m thinkin’ one of the prospects are good for this. It’s the first year we’ve decided to have them, and suddenly we’ve got a mole on the inside? Don’t sit well with me,” Ox said softly.
Fury kept his gaze trained on everything else, making sure no one was hiding in any corners listening.
“Agreed. Which one do you figure for this? My bet is on Torch. Fucker’s been rude to Rayna since she got here,” Fury said.
Ox scratched at his chin.
“Yeah, alright. It’s possible, but Arrow’s been real attentive to her, too. Keep an eye out for either one, brother. May be both of them.”
Fury peeked into Rayna’s room to see Green sitting beside her, his phone playing a movie.
From the soundtrack, it was some romantic movie that Fury couldn’t stomach to watch in a million years.
Still, the sight was sweet, and he couldn’t deny the fact that he was pleased as punch that his woman fit in with his crew.
“I’m gonna rally the guys, call Church. Just remember Fury, we have to be discreet. For once, your temper could blow it for all of us.”
Ox’s words his him straight in the gut, much like he imagined he’d intended for them to- and he was right.
Too often Fury let his temper best him, rule him, run him, but this wasn’t about only him.
He had to take care of Rayna now, too.
“Understood.”
Ox nodded, and with a sigh heavy enough to fell a tree, he disappeared down the hallway.
Fury watched him go before he turned back to Rayna’s room and posed the door open.
Green was resting his chin on his hands, his phone propped up and still playing the movie.
He glanced up at him, his green eyes sad and tired.
I feel you, man.
Fury was so exhausted that he could drop dead and he’d still be tired, but he wouldn’t leave Rayna unprotected…not again.
“Laura texted me, she’s on her way back.”
Fury nodded and fell into a chair on the opposite side of her bed from Green, his dark eyes closing.
What if she can’t forgive me?
What if I’ve ruined this for us?
Fury could feel his own anxiety practically paralyzing him, his fists clenching in his lap.
“Why don’t you go shower, change? You look like shit and you smell like blood.”
Fury tugged on his shirt, noting the hefty blood stains marking the thin material.
He scratched at his beard, which had gotten unruly as hell in the last couple of months.
“Can’t. Gotta watch her.”
Green eyed him closely, his astute gaze making Fury uncomfortable.
“I ain’t a rat, Fury. I wouldn’t sell out you or Rayna.”
Fury had no idea what to say to that.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
Green scoffed.
“Look, I'm no genius, but I ain’t stupid. You think I haven’t realized that someone gave away your location? The Blazin’ Eagles would have never gotten the drop on you if someone on the inside hadn’t told ‘em.”
Fury didn’t make a sound- what could he say?
“It kinda hurts my feelings that you’d suspect me of all people, but I understand. And if you really think I’m the rat, I’ll let you shoot me right now with my own gun if it’ll make you feel better. But I care for Rayna too, ya know.”
Green surprised Fury further when he pulled out his own desert eagle and held it out to him.
After a long, tense pause, Fury finally shook his head.
“No, brother. I believe you. Ox and me think it’s one of the prospects,” Fury muttered.
Green only nodded as he strapped his gun back into it’s holster.
“I’m sorry, Green. It ain’t personal, but Rayna is…she’s everything. I don’t want to lose her.”
Green turned up the volume on his phone, bathing the room in some piano tune.
“I get it. One day I hope I can care about someone like that, too. She’s a good woman. You deserve her.”
Fury felt even worse hearing his brother say that, because he hadn’t deserved for Fury to suspect him as the club rat.
But, like he said, it wasn’t personal…
“I mean it, man. I know you care about her. I shouldn’t have questioned your loyalty.”
“You’re right, you shouldn’t have. I did three years in the slammer for this club. The last thing I would do is hurt anyone in it,” Green murmured.
He wasn’t paying attention to Fury anymore, though.
He was watching the movie playing on his phone, his auburn head nestled against one of Rayna’s hands.
If it were any other man doing that, Fury would have cracked their fucking skull for getting so close to his woman.
Green was a good man, a good brother, and a good best-fucking-friend.
Who am I to separate the dynamic duo?
Chapter Eighteen
Fury settled into his seat as Ox lifted his gavel, slamming the wooden tool down once.
“We all know why we’re in here, men. Fury and Rayna were ambushed down in Myrtle, and there’s only one way that could have happened,” Ox said somberly.
Ox’s amber gaze traveled the length of the table, as Fury did his own studying.
“Yeah, somebody in this room is a fuckin’ rat,” Limit said as he slammed a fist down onto the table.
Rider sat back in his char, his trusty tablet in his hands, as he lit a cigarette.
Fury noticed that both Arrow and Torch were playing close attention to Ox, their stances stiff.
“Exactly. And Rayna knows who it is.”
More than one grumble came from the men in the room, and Fury made sure to watch each and every brother as they heard the news.
Lie, it’s a lie.
“If she’s seen him, why didn’t she say anything?”
“She told me about it when we were in Myrtle, but she didn’t get a chance to give me a name. We were ambushed before she could. Said she heard him talking on the phone to the Blazin’ Eagles before we left the clubhouse,” Fury said.
He hoped the lie sounded believable, because they were banking on it to work.
Slayer sat back in his chair and shook his head.
“This is nuts, man. You can’t honestly think that one of us dropped the dime on them?”
Ox nodded.
“That’s exactly what I think. The only other people that knew where Rayna was to begin with are now scattered dust in the wind, Slayer. The men in this room are the only people on the planet that know she’s here with us.”
Prettyboy had his bandana back in place, but his green eyes were practically burning a hole in the table top.
“I would never hurt Rayna,” He rasped.
Fury didn’t think that he would, but he couldn’t say that.
After what had happened with Green, he was sure none of the Original Seven were involved in the ambush, but he had to put on a good show for the prospects.
“I’d like to think that no one wearing my fuckin’ colors would go after an old lady, but that seems to be exactly whats happened here.”
Ox’s eyes swept over the two men in the corner, and Fury watched his fist close tightly around the gavel.
Neither one of the prospects gave anything away, not that Fury expected them to; admitting to their treason would end in certain death, and they were both well aware of that.
The Seven Deadlies built their reputation on being a vicious outlaw biker gang before Ox found a way to make most of their income legal in the last few years.
Ox’s father was the previous president, but after he was killed in the middle of a bloody battle with a rival club four years ago, Ox took over the gavel and led the club in the right direction. A better direction, that didn’t involve constant turf wars and the blistering heat from ATF.
Torch and Arrow knew that by wearing those prospects patches they were risking their lives to join a brotherhood, a family, that would always have their backs- if they returned the favor.
“One of you fucked over my club, and I’m going to find out who you are. One of you risked the lives of your brothers, of Fury’s old lady, and that will not go unanswered. As soon as she wakes up, which will be soon, your ass is mine,” Ox barked.
No one questioned him; no one said a word.
Fury did see Torch step away from Arrow and move closer to the table.
Fury wanted to snap his beefy little neck, but he couldn’t do that without tangible evidence that he’d been the one to out Rayna.
He couldn’t shed his blood unless it was voted in by the rest of his club, and every other member apart from Green seemed too pissed to care about the prospects.
Fury understood why, too- on the off chance that one of them did betray him and the club, he couldn’t very well spell it out to them that the prospects were suspects A and B.
Instead, he had to act like they were all on the list, and that was a bitter pill to swallow.
“For now, track the remaining Eagles and wait for her to wake up. Meeting adjourned,” Ox said as he slammed the gavel down twice.
Fury shot to his feet and headed for the door, his only care in the world being Rayna fucking Claire.
Laura was waiting for him when he arrived, and she rose to her feet as he entered Rayna’s room.
“She’s doing great, Fury. Her vitals are up and steady and her wound is looking good. No signs of infection. She should be up and talking in no time,” Laura assured.
Fury hung his head as he nodded.
“By the way, I like you without the beard. Who knew there was a handsome face lurking beneath all that hair?,” She joked.
He smiled at her.
“I hope she likes it,” He said with a shrug.
“I bet she will. I’m going to go brief Ox on what’s going on, but I’ll be back to check on her again before I leave.”
Fury nodded as he eyed the familiar IV stand pumping Rayna full of antibiotics and whatever else Laura thought she’d need.
“Hey, I didn’t thank you for…saving her. Thanks.”
Laura’s cheeks heated and she smiled again, her hand wrapping around his shoulder.
“My pleasure. She makes a good addition.”
Fury agreed wholeheartedly, and he wanted to tell Rayna that himself, but it would have to wait.
He watched Laura go, and he knew that any time now, he’d be reunited with those glorious blue eyes of her and then he was going to beg on bended knee for her to stay with him.
Ox’s words from earlier kept cracking against the inside of his skull, hammering his point home…
“You and I both know better than anyone that you can’t force someone to stick around if they don’t want to.”
Fury knew he was right, and besides, it hadn’t worked with Lizzie, why would it work with Rayna?
Lizzie had been stifled by this life, and he couldn't blame her for wanting better.
Fury didn’t blame her for wanting better.
Lizzie made a good life for herself as a real estate agent in Bryson City, and while she wasn’t making millions in the small town, she made enough to live a happy, carefree life.
Fury’s sister had always been a free spirit, loving to travel and enjoy everything life had to offer before she was murdered.
Fury missed everything about her, and the joy she brought to his life, but he didn’t blame her for wanting better than what he could offer her at the time.
Lizzie had never been one to settle, and he was glad that she hadn’t settled for him.
He wished more than anything that she’d gone farther, away from North Carolina, away from the clutches of the MC completely, but he was gradually learning to forgive himself for that. Still, Ox was right.
He hadn't forced Lizzie to stay here with him before, and he couldn’t force Rayna to stay here with him now.
Fury sat down in the same chair Green had vacated hours earlier and lifted her hand into his, studying her.
“Ya know, when I was younger, I always thought I’d be better off alone. Lizzie always had her own plans, Ox had his life together early on. I didn't think I’d ever meet someone to shake things up the way you have, Rayna. I definitely didn’t expect to be the first Deadly to get an old lady,” Fury said as he laughed.
“Honestly, I was scared to find a woman of my own. After the way my dad treated us, after all the blood I've shed, I didn’t think I’d be good for anyone. Especially someone soft and sweet like you, baby.”
Rayna didn’t stir, so Fury pressed her knuckles to his mouth.
It was getting late, and Fury knew he needed sleep, but he couldn’t convince himself to leave her room altogether, so he pulled the other chair over to him and rested his feet against the cushions.
With her hand still in his, he let his eyes drift closed.
Apart from her deep breathing and the steady beeping from her the monitor behind her head, Rayna’s room was silent as Fury drifted off into a fitful sleep, never even realizing that another pair of eyes watched them from the darkness of the hallway.
~`~
I fucking hurt.
Rayna’s eyes opened slowly, and she blinked a few times to clear the haziness from her vision.
It was dark out, her room
filled only with the muted light of the moon.
In fact, she was vaguely reminded of her first night within the confines of the Seven Deadlies’s clubhouse as she tried to sit up in bed.
Fury was asleep in a chair beside her, the monitor above her head was beeping quietly, and her whole body was aching.
We’ve come full circle, I guess.
It only took a moment for Rayna to remember the events that led to her waking up in her bed, hooked up to wires and monitors with a fresh hole in her belly.
The Blazin’ Eagles weren't just back, they were hunting her.
Hunting. Her.
Rayna could see from where she sat that Fury was obviously exhausted; he had purple circles under her eyes and while it was obvious he’d shaved his long beard, he had a fresh layer of stubble along his chin.
She slowly pulled her hand from his, not wanting to disturb him while she checked herself out.
I have all of my fingers and toes.
I’m not bleeding from anywhere…
As Rayna lifted the clean white t-shirt she was wearing (something that was obviously Fury’s if the size was any indication) her fingers grazed the edges of the bandage lining her stomach.
The thick white material was stiff against her soft skin, and while she knew that she should leave it a mystery, she had to see the damage done.
She slowly peeled back the tape keeping the bandage in place and winced when the purple and black mottled flesh came into view. There weren't many stitches involved, but the wound itself was bruised and hurt like the dickens.
“Fuck,” She whispered as she touched her bruised skin.
It was tender and sore as her fingers drifted over the puckered flesh, but Laura had obviously done a good job in patching her up. The pain wasn’t overwhelming like it had been before, instead there was a steady throbbing pulsing beneath the damaged skin.
Rayna hissed as she sat up further in bed, her head snapping to the side as she made sure Fury was still asleep.
He was.
Rayna sucked in a deep breath and relaxed against her soft sheets.
