Somewhere in South America
Diego Garcia cradled the phone against his shoulder and ran the brush over the stuffed tapir on the workbench.
“I am most distressed to hear of this, Esteban. I had hoped for better…closure.”
“You mean a body, mi amigo?”
“Sí, that as well. But it seems your…Medea, was it?…Has failed in her mission.”
“Much to my regret.”
“And mine as well.” Diego fluffed some of the tapir’s fur and then stood back to admire his work. “We shall have to find some way for you to make amends.”
“It was a favor, Diego. How am I to be held accountable for a favor that did not work to your specifications?”
“That I do not know.” He tilted his head this way and that. Something didn’t quite speak to him about this piece. Perhaps a darker eye color. Sí, that was the issue. Arturo Moreno had possessed darker eyes.
He got his small knife and popped out one glass eye and then another, letting them roll across the workbench.
“We shall come up with something, Esteban. In the meantime, kill that bitch for me. You can do that, can you not?”
“She’s currently in a council facility, which makes it difficult, but I shall try, Diego.”
“Do more than try…succeed.”
His adjutant came through the doorway. “Sir, we’ve recovered Manuel Gutierrez. He’s below.”
“Put him in one of the rooms. We’ll let him simmer for a while, and I’ll pay him a visit tonight.” He carefully began putting his tools back into their appropriate places in the cabinet. Sloppy tools made for sloppy work. “I must go, Esteban. I have an appointment.” He smiled as he thought of the capybara-shifter waiting for him in the east wing. “A very important appointment that I cannot miss. Have a pleasant evening, mi amigo. I know I shall.”
