“Not all the way,” I whisper.

She conceals a big grin behind her drink and swipes the sole of her foot around my crown.

“Uh.” I accidently release a grunt and swiftly emit a fake cough to cover the sound. “Must’ve swallowed wrong.” I suggest to her parents and finish my drink.

Jules continues to hold a nonchalant conversation with everyone while secretly fluttering her toes over every inch of my dick. At one point I become so worked up I sound like a babbling idiot.

... Mmm, this is exciting, I mean touching. Stroking and touching. No, I mean... it’s nice. It’s a nice dinner, everyone. Glad you’re all here. Toes and all...

  What a douche.

And that look—damn she’s proud of herself, presenting me with an endless flash of her pearly whites.

My voice upsurges and breaks whenever I speak, providing Sam the belief that my nervousness is on account of him. The man’s in heaven with how uncomfortable I am, and I’m in heaven with his daughter’s foot gliding over my dick. His thoughts and mine are like night and day.

I’m aroused by soft, lubed, skin that passionately performs all the way through dessert. She rolls a cherry over her tongue and I dab my forehead, playing along with her games. This is the longest I’ve ever been teased, the quietest I’ve had to remain, and the closest I’ve come to climax without a release, not just once, or twice, but multiple times throughout the night.

She’s fucked. She will be fucked. I’m so ready.

“That was great.” Angie sets her napkin on the table and puts her hand on Jules’ arm in an adoring manner. “I’m so happy for you, and it’s wonderful you found someone who isn’t threatened by the fact that you used to be a man.”

“Oh, the secret’s out.” Jules places her elbows on the table and rests her face in her hands. “I wasn’t going to tell him until our wedding night. I wanted our first time to be extra-special.”

I laugh. “Hey, as long as you’re equipped with something down there and it works without batteries, we’re good. Heck, I’m okay even if it requires batteries. We’ll make it work somehow.”

Sam struggles with our playfulness, standing with his wife to leave. “I can only hear so much about my daughter’s ‘future bedroom activities,’” he gestures quote marks, “before I need to eradicate it from my mind by watching some cable melodrama so I can sleep.”

Jules and Angie share a moment of whispering before her friend stands, purse in hand, with a thank you and a finger wave.

“You okay to drive?” I ask.

“Jules drove me here so I’m taking a cab home... mind if I join you on the way out?” she asks the Barringers.

“No, not at all,” Karina says, surprising me with a kiss on the cheek. I smile and rise slightly to shake Sam’s hand, making sure not to stand upright so the tablecloth doesn’t drop from my waist. Again, he feels superior that I’m lingering beneath him, inferior to him like a servant boy... a knave, as Jack would say. And to be honest, it doesn’t bother me one bit since I know his daughter, my soon-to-be wife, her ass, is about to be fucked in five... they give her hug and start to leave... four... I smile as they walk out... three... Jules stands and slides the door to the private room shut... two... she walks over and sits on my lap... one.

  “Hi.”

  “Fuck me,” I demand. “Now.”

She lifts her skirt and moves her new panties to the side, sliding in.

“No.” I take my blade from my pocket and cut them off, then pull out. “Anal.”

“Man of few words,” she whispers, taking a clump of butter in her hands and rubbing it over my cock.

“Uh,” my mouth opens and eyes blur.

“Whoa, I didn’t realize you were so close.”

  “Now.”

She rubs my tip over her hole and slowly lowers, bringing me partway in.

The dessert plates are slid away, her back hits the table, and legs wrap around my waist. “You cruel tease. Damn, your ass is so fucking tight.” I pound into her. “Fuck, fuck. I can’t believe you kept me on the brink for so long.” I give her a hard thrust and hold steady, then repeat to power and possess. “Fuck.” And with another push into her crushing-tight space, I finally eclipse the exhaustive peak I’ve been trapped in all night.

“Oh, Mark. You’re cumming. Yes.” She touches my cheeks as my forearms hit the table.

Her dress is gnawed to confine my groans. It’s quick and intense—the spasms deep, my passion obvious, and her love prized.

  “Dear woman,” I gasp.

I’ve been at climax for a fucking hour, waiting for the tension to be released and my head to level out.

  “My woman.”

We kiss affectionately and I grunt, “Mine.”

  RID

“THE SIGHT OF BUTTER will forever give me an erection.”

My suit jacket’s folded over my forearm, covering the stains on my pants as we leave the restaurant.

“You think the busboy overheard? He was standing next to the door when we came out.”

“Probably, but who cares? As long as no one walked in while I was cumming in your ass... I’d rather have people hear me fuck, than watch. What do you call that type of sex anyway? Getting the butt end of the butter stick?”

We laugh and hold hands, walking down the corridor toward the lobby. It’s a busy night. People are arriving for the holidays, needing a place to stay when visiting relatives. Shit, speaking of which...

“Oh crap,” Jules says with dropped shoulders. “Leave him alone. You’re not supposed to know he’s here.”

“Hmm.” I smirk. “I was just about to mention how perfect this day was, perfect, perfect. Everything went down without a hitch. And there, before my eyes, as the night’s coming to a beautiful end, is my favorite brother-in-law sneaking into my bar. The day just keeps getting better and better. Hell, I’ve missed him.”

I take a step forward and she pulls me back.

“No. I’m serious. Sophia doesn’t want you to know he’s here, not yet. Pretend you never saw him.”

“What? Pretend I never saw him? Why? I knew he’d come here and apologize, that’s no secret. I’m just gonna say hello...”

“Please, let them work things out first. Keep your nose out of their business.”

I sigh and shake my head. “I’ll meet you upstairs. One drink, just one, and then I’ll be up.”

“No.” She clutches my hand even tighter, practically cutting off my circulation.

“What are you so worried about?” She’s nervous. Afraid I’ll find out about the wedding, and if Cove’s wasted, who knows what he’ll say.

“Don’t ask him any questions about today.”

  “Like what?”

“Oh fuck, forget it. I’m coming with you.”

  “No, you’re not,” I laugh.

“Mark, don’t be upset with him about his marriage. Sophia doesn’t want the two of you to get into a fight, that’s why we didn’t mention he was here. You don’t have all the details.”

I place my hands on my hips and give her my best bullshit look.

“Listen to me.” She points at my face.

“No, you listen. It’s drink time with my bro.”

“With your what? Your bro? Dear Lord, this is going in that direction? You’re going to sound like a dumbass again to make me laugh so I’ll lighten up and you can get your way?”

  “Umm, yes?”

“Would you please lower your hands and cover that butter stain.”

I look down, forgetting it was there.

“You can’t go in there all buttered up.”

I laugh. “Surprisingly, I’ve heard that line before.”

  “Gah!”

“Cove doesn’t care. He’ll get a kick out of the soft creamy spread story.”

  “No!”

“See ya in a bit.” I turn and walk toward the bar.

  “Hey, wait.” She sounds tr
oubled. “I have to tell you something.”

“Later. I’ll be upstairs soon enough. Thirty minutes?”

“No, wait... Cove doesn’t know... we went... I didn’t tell everyone today that... don’t get angry, okay?”

“You don’t have to tell me anything... hold on, don’t get angry at what?” my voice rises. Now I’m confused.

  “Promise me you won’t yell.”

  “Spill it,” I demand.

“Fuck. If I tell you, don’t ask why.”

“I don’t have a clue what you’re referring to. What?”

She bites her bottom lip and looks around like her hand’s caught in the cookie jar.

  “Did you kill someone?”

She giggles nervously. “I wish. At least I could go into detail about something like that. No, I had to go to Reno today, but no questions.”

“That far? In this weather? Wait, you said you were going downtown, a ten-minute drive. Downtown is only a ten-minute drive.” I say, impersonating her high-pitched voice.

“It was for something special. No questions!”

“Well what the fuck’s the issue with Cove then?”

“We picked him up from the airport in Reno. I know he won’t mention the shopping, but he may say we were out there to get him. I wanted to tell you I was there before he did.”

“Wait a second. How the fuck did you do that trip in the amount of time we discussed?”

She bites her lip even harder.

  “Jules?”

“We left this morning,” she says quickly. “The moment you started working. Not at noon, a few hours earlier.”

“During the heavy snow?” My hands are back on my hips.

  “Mark, the stains.”

“Jules, the fucking weather. I don’t want to lose you, or anyone else for that matter. You took Soph and the kids too? How’d all of you fit in the truck?”

“I... we... I took the Sequoia. The one used to take guests places.”

“You did what?” My brow lifts. “Wow, okay. Let me get this straight. You lied about the time you left, where you were going, stole the hotel’s SUV, and risked your life and the lives of my family for a goddamn shopping trip? Am I hearing you correctly?”

A guest walks past and looks at my groin.

  “Answer me!”

“You’re making it sound worse than it is.”

“So you believe it’s not that bad? But for some reason you didn’t want to tell me? Jesus, your ass is grass. How can I be so madly in love with you one minute, and want to bury you neck-deep in the snow the next?”

  “I’m sorry.”

  “Go home.”

“You’re kidding, right? Don’t walk away from me!”

I reach the bar, alone. To hell if I’m going to say, oh that’s okay, princess, go ahead and lie to me any time you’d like. Then again, it is for the wedding. I’m torn on this one, like she is. I guess I’m so upset because I love her to death. Genuinely upset, not just playing along this time...

  “Hello, handsome. Come here often?”

Cove lets out a long exhale with his hand covering his face, indicating he wants to be left alone.

“I was hoping you didn’t see me.”

“You can’t hide behind that tiny girlie hand.” I gesture for my bartender.

  “That’s not what I meant.”

“I know exactly what you meant... give me the same.” I motion to Cove’s drink and watch a glass of Coke being poured and set in front of me, no liquor, just Coke. “What are you doing in here if you’re not drinking?”

“Like I said,” he takes a sip and sighs, “it was a duck and escape.”

I sit next to him and set my jacket over my crotch, covering any evidence of dessert. “How are you?”

“I’m fixing everything with Sophia, so don’t piss on me.”

“Who’s pissing? You see my dick out? I’m asking you a friendly question. How the fuck are you, man?”

He swirls his glass and sips it like it’s liquor. “Life’s bland, for the most part, so that makes me happy.”

“See. That’s good. Happy, like ha-ha I’m a drunk, or happy like, I love my life?”

His head finally raises and I smile when I see his dark features.

“Or happy because you’re so good looking?”

He relaxes, and I’m surprised he caught on to my Seinfeld reference, tossing one back in good fun...

“These pretzels are making me thirsty.” He takes a drink of soda with a grin.

“You’re so much better at that than me, being emotionless and deadpan when you’re sober. It works for you.”

  “How’s Jack doing?” he asks.

  “Ah, he’s alright.”

The lights dim, replaced by a string of glowing holiday decorations along the liquor shelf. Must be eight. The evening bar specials and room transformation has begun.

“He’s up and down all the time like the rest of us, a true Jameson, only slightly crazier. Sometimes I think he’s gonna kill me in my sleep.”

Guests’ eyes are drawn to the glowing bottles of golden liquids, red flickering bulbs skip to the music, and the smell of stale beer and cinnamon are heavy in the air. Cove crosses his legs, dressed in black jeans and a pair of Chelsea style boots. His finger traces the etched pine trees on the tumbler drinking glass before taking another sip, stopping to roll his flannel sleeves to expose his watch. He checks the time then decides to continue the conversation.

“What about you? Holding up okay?” he asks.

“With Jack? I feel terrible when he gets depressed. Other than that, we’re doing okay.”

“I was referring more about this refuge in the pines and your sanity. I heard you went on a boat trip today. This time of the year, that can only mean one thing.” He holds up a finger for a refill.

“Easy buddy,” I tease. “Too much caffeine and you won’t be able to sleep.”

One of my servers lights the candles on the tables throughout the room then places a couple of logs in the corner fireplace. It’s peaceful in here, but still early. At ten, the place will transform into another world.

“Things are taken care of and I’m stable. We don’t need to discuss the boat.”

“Was it for the guy who was in St. Louis? Soph said he’s here.”

“Not any longer. No need to be troubled over the asshole.”

  “Gone?”

“Living at the bottom of the twenty-two mile lake.”

He sneers and releases a wounding remark. “That relentless, flippant attitude you have about death is what makes you Paul’s son. At ease with taking a man’s life like it has no meaning.”

  “I’m not him.”

“That’s right, you’re a man who kills people, or protects people... protects, that’s the magic word, isn’t it Mark? So here’s the thing—that asshole, as you call him, was in my bar, screwing with my family. I deserve to know what the hell’s going on. You killed him. Why? Who is he?”

“Give me a shot of anything,” I shout to my bartender. “Make it a double.”

  “Fuck, that bad?”

“Cove, trust me when I say you don’t want to know. Let’s talk about something else.”

“I should just go back to our suite,” he mumbles. “I needed to walk around after a long day of travel, but I didn’t realize I’d run into you. Soph will be fuming if she finds out I’m here anyway.”

“You ever think about divorcing her?” I ask.

“What? Oh, don’t start this shit. No, I’m not leaving my wife.”

“So she’s here because she wants out, not you?”

“No. Neither one of those things are true.”

“Are you sure? That’s not what she said yesterday. She’s leaving your ass, wants out of the marriage, and can’t wait to get away from your boozing... look at you, sitting here, chugging all those sodas... pathetic.” I down the shots and hold back a grin. “You’re
a disgrace, Mr. Everton... how long you been sober? It can’t be for only one day. No way, not with such calm hands. They should be a shaky mess right now. I’d say you haven’t had a drink for some time, but according to my sister, she left for that reason.” I turn rapidly and place a hand on his back. “Did I ever tell you how much I hate surprises?”

“Where the hell is this going?” He pulls away.

“A surprise is a secret that was born from a lie.”

  “A what is a what?”

“I’d choose getting my teeth pulled without any Novocain, over being lied to by someone wanting to keep a secret that ends in a god-awful surprise. And that’s what my life’s been all about. The cane man opened my eyes to that, and I’m tired of it. All of it. No more.” I wave my hand like I’m casting it all away.

“Ahh, I get it.” He inhales with a continual nod. “Another one of your cryptic stories? Is this one a comedy or a tragedy?”

  “Both... I think. Listen.”

  “I am listening.”

I take a deep breath, and state, “You can learn a lot about your past once people around you are finished denying it.”

He sets his drink on the bar and stares blankly.

“Let it sink in for a few years.”

  “I’m thinking,” he says.

  “It’s not a question, there’s no answer.”

“But it’s a reference to one of us. That guy must be from Paul’s company. Why else would he want to haunt both you and me? We have no other connection.”

“It was a family issue, nothing more. Everyone from Paul’s company has either moved on, forgotten about us, or is dead. I can’t think of anyone else we have to lose sleep over.”

  “We’re family. Tell me—”

“We are?” I laugh. “That’s the first time I’ve heard you say that.”

He stares ahead with a tight mouth, swirling his drink in the air. “We are,” he whispers. “That’s why I’m here.”

“Yeah?” I smirk. “Okay then... nearest and dearest brother-in-law... since you put it that way, Paul and I do have something in common. We both married over a pregnancy. Only I did it because I was young and I thought it was the manly thing to do. His motivation, I can only guess, was based on a shared experience, something he was trying to conquer, or perhaps a last-ditch chance to escape... fuck, I’ll never know the whole truth. Each fucker would give me a different story if they were still alive. All secrets, all lies, one big surprise.”
