The Headless Mummy

I roll my eyes. “I told Mrs. Klopper to keep the whole thing to herself, to not mention anything about it,” I say to Hailey before I open the car’s back door. “It’s better that way for everyone involved. That includes you.”
“Or what?” Hailey snips. “Are you gonna sit on me till I pop, too? Haven’t you killed enough sisters for one day?” She finally grows tired of waiting for me to open the door and she looks me in the eyes. “Okay already! My lips are zipped, brother big butt.”
I believe her.
As we climb into the backseat of my mom’s car, I’m struck by the fact that I’ve done it again. I’ve solved my fourth case as a private detective.
But there will be no stories about this in the Baskerville Daily News. No certificate of thanks from the museum. And no bragging around the dinner table. This is the kind of case that’s better left a secret.
But that’s okay with me.
Every case closed brings me one step closer to life as a detective and gives me a little more proof that I was born with a gift.
