Emily stood up, fastened her drawers, and dropped her skirts. McAllister pulled her down onto his lap and kissed her. “If you ever run away again, however, I will hand you over to Mr. Johnson for a long session with the boy’s cat. Do you know what that is?
“No, but I’m sure I’ll find out soon enough.” Emily sighed, slipping her arms around his neck.
“It’s a very nasty flogging device, invented for the navy, for use on boys. On the younger midshipmen, anyway. Trust the navy to think of a novel way to torture children. It’s a sort of miniature cat o’ nine tails, with knots at the end of each ‘tail,’ and it’s applied to the unfortunate midshipman’s bared posteriors, while he is conveniently bent over the breech of a cannon.”
“And you would know about this device from, what, “ Emily teased, “Personal experience?”
“I would.”
“You were not happy in the navy, I gather?”
“Not at certain moments. I did enjoy Tahiti, though, as Mr. Melville had indicated I might.”
Emily yawned sleepily. “I have heard that the women of those islands wear no clothing above the waist.”
“They do not. It is a very advanced civilization, from which we could learn a great deal. The ladies on the island of Fiji have adopted a similar manner of dress, although the people there are somewhat less hospitable. They have been known to cook and eat naval officers and other passers-by on occasion. It’s rumored that they ate the late, renowned Captain Cook.”
“You’re no longer angry at me, then?” Emily asked.
“No, but don’t let it go to your head. Now I know what Nantucketers use on rebellious animals with too much spirit.”
Ethan picked up the crop, and put it on the desk next to his coat.
“I thought you said it was too noisy,” Emily objected.
“Here, possibly, but aboard the Liza, the noise will barely be noticeable. We should be able to make very handsome use of it.”
“But, now that I’m carrying a child, surely you would not spank me!” Emily teased.
McAllister thought for a moment. “I wouldn’t count on that, darling. I’m quite sure that a stout switch or two, applied vigorously but very carefully to a pregnant lady’s upturned rump would cause no harm to the babe, while making the lady herself quite sorry for her misdeeds. I shall, of course, consult your doctor first, or perhaps have him observe the proceedings, if you prefer. On the other hand, I do remember a picture I once saw. It was in a book of an uncommonly vulgar nature, having to do with the British fascination with birching. The young lady in the picture was suffering what appeared to be a truly impressive flogging while lying on her back, with her adorably plump legs up over her head and her charmingly dimpled bottom and what-have-you absolutely bare. A gentleman, well, at least he was dressed like a gentleman, was giving the unfortunate young lady what looked like pure hell with a switch, made out of several, bunched together, actually. So, it occurs to me that such a position would be a more comfortable for a pregnant lady such as yourself. Should the need arise, of course. What do you think?”
“I think you’re a cad!”
“Possibly.”
“Then, you would spank me for the entire length of my confinement, if I displeased you?”
“No, sweetheart, I would try to refrain from it as long as humanly possible, and administer the required thrashing at the end of your confinement, when I could endure no more of your behavior. I had hoped, actually, that motherhood would improve your disposition, and your obedience.”
“Well,” she sighed. “I have never been with child before, of course, and have no way of knowing what to expect, but I do understand that women can become quite odd and unpredictable.”
Ethan laughed. “Then perhaps we will both be pleasantly surprised, darling, and you will become a model of obedience and comportment.”
Emily smiled wickedly. “I wouldn’t count on that, darling.”

Epilogue
Exactly five months and twenty-two days later, Mrs. Ethan McAllister was delivered safely of twin sons, at her home in Boston. Captain Ethan McAllister, father of the healthy, seven and a half pound infants, was in attendance, as was his devoted mother, Mrs. Phoebe McAllister, of Philadelphia. The children’s paternal grandfather, Angus, has announced that both boys will seek admission to the School of Law at Harvard College at the earliest possible date. Upon hearing this, the children’s mother only smiled.
