“I was doing well until I lost my computer. I’m trying to figure out a coding error, though; it’s a little frustrating. The damn thing normally just reboots, but this time I can’t seem to get it going again.”

“I’ll come right down and see what I can do,” he replied and hung up before I could protest.

Tom was standing next to my desk in less than two minutes. His glasses pressed deep into his nose as he leaned down near my legs to look at the computer. I tried to roll my chair away, but he had his hand on the arm rest to support himself while he looked for the serial number.

“I can get the number for you, Tom,” I offered, as his close proximity to my legs started to make me nervous.

“It’s okay, I’ve got it. You know, this is one of the oldest computers in the office. I think you should have one of the new ones since you’re doing so much programming and network projects.

“Why don’t you take the rest of today off, and I’ll have our new vendor come set up the Lightning Razor computer for you in the morning. He swears by this new model and I was going to test it out, but since your computer is crap, I think it might be easier to just give it to you.”

Although I really didn’t want to have to deal with a new computer, the Lightning Razor was epic in the computer world and I was excited at the opportunity to mess around with it. If my computer wasn’t even going to turn on, then it was time for me to suck it up and get the new one. It would take a little bit of work to set it up, but once I had it running, the new computer would be ideal for my productivity.

“All right, I’ll talk with Robert and cut my day short today. What time should I meet with the vendor tomorrow?”

“I’ll have him come at eight,” he said as he pushed himself back into the standing position.

Tom leaned against my desk with part of his stomach showing from under his polo shirt. It took all the self control I had not to look straight at his bulging stomach as I tried to wrap up our conversation.

“Okay, I’ll be here. Thanks so much for your help. Have a good rest of your day.”

“You know, I was just about to head out early today, too. Would you like to go to an afternoon movie or something?”

“I’m sorry, Tom, I’m still not really dating right now. You know it’s just so hard to move on after losing the love of my life,” I said dramatically.

“Oh, yeah. I’m sorry. Okay. Um, yeah, I’ll touch base tomorrow after the technician leaves. Have a good day,” he said as he scurried away.

“You said you’d go out with the next guy who asked,” Mattie laughed from the other cubicle.

“Oh no, that one doesn’t count. I’d rather date the guy from the website.”

“Do me a favor and keep your profile visible for a little bit. It might be fun to at least talk to some decent guys…assuming there are decent guys on our website. Sometimes I wonder.”

“Fine, I’ll make it public tonight. I’m going to head out for the day. I’m trying to get a long run in for my marathon training; any chance you want to join me?” I asked, although I already knew the answer.

“Nope. Have fun with that torture.”

“See you tomorrow, and maybe you can actually offer a little help next time Tom gets his sweaty butt into my cubicle. I thought we were friends.”

“I know, but it was so fun to watch you squirm.”

“I hate you and love you all at the same time.”

“I know. I love you, too,” Mattie said as she waved goodbye and I gathered my things for the day.

My endorphins were still racing through my system after flirting with Brandon. It was the perfect time to go for a long run and zone out a little. I wasn’t all that great at running, but it was the best stress reliever around.

  Chapter 4

  Brandon

“If you watch this trend, you’ll be able to catch the upsell just before it starts. Then you can’t take a break, you can’t walk away from your computer: you have to watch diligently for the downward movement to start so you can sell.”

“Josh, you make it sound so urgent. How much an I really going to lose if I go to the bathroom during a decline?” I laughed.

Josh took his job of stock trading very seriously. Even when I joked with him, his face stayed solid and he didn’t react to my attempts at humor. I appreciated his serious nature around teaching me his investment techniques, but even a good businessman had to take a leak every now and then.

Learning about stocks seemed a natural next step for me. I hoped after taking a break from business that I might step into running something new down the line. It was sad that I didn’t understand the stock market more than I did, especially considering I’d only been able to sell my company after going public and getting top dollar on the market.

“If you are asking me a serious question about when to take a break, I’d say to make sure you have an iPad with the tracking information on it so you can carry it around while you’re watching for the bubble to break.”

  “Then I’m allowed to pee?”

“Yes, then you can pee. But you can seriously lose millions of dollars if you mess this up, Brandon. I’ve seen a stock drop up to five dollars within minutes. If you have a million shares of stock, you just lost a hell of a lot of money, even for you.”

“I understand, Josh; I’m just messing with you. Can we take a break for the day? My mind just isn’t in the investing mode right now. It’s sort of a pile of mush. How do I turn you back into my fun friend and out of this cranky stock trader?”

  “You’re the boss.”

It was true – technically, I was paying Josh for his time, so we could do whatever it was I wanted to do. He was also my friend, though, and I valued his time and expertise in this field. I hadn’t made my money by using people and I didn’t want to start now.

Throughout my years in business, people were what got me through. I hired the right people at the right time and everything seemed to come together perfectly for my company. I’d been interviewed about the success of my manufacturing firm and had to admit that it wasn’t just me that made it successful. It had been the combination of everyone doing exactly what needed to be done at just the right time.

“We’ll just take a little break; I know you need to get going soon.”

“Yep, I’d like to get in on the surge for that Randall company. I’ll need to go soon so I can follow that trend.”

“Hell, just log into your account here. I’ll probably learn more from watching you than from trying to do it before I really know what I’m doing. At this point, I feel like my investments are just a donation to charity until I’ve figured out how to turn it all around.”

“Are you sure? I can get pretty wrapped up in it and won’t be able to just log out until a sell order comes.”

“Yep, I had some other business to do, anyways. I’ll pull up next to you here and watch you while I get this stuff done.”

I didn’t actually have business to do – more like checking my Dating the Rich account to see if Delilah had returned my messages. Her account seemed to disappear very quickly after we were talking, but then late the previous evening, I’d noticed it was back up and running. She was mysterious: I had to at least give her that much.

“Oh, the dating site; how’s that going?” Josh asked as he noticed me logging in. “Have you found the love of your life yet?”

“It’s just a little fun for right now. Most of these girls don’t really seem like my type.”

It was the truth: most of the women who had emailed me seemed like they were barely bright enough to log into their accounts. Their messages were riddled with spelling and grammar errors, and although I wasn’t perfect in that area, I could put together a sentence that actually made sense.”

“Wow, do all the women post bikini profile pictures? I think I need to get back into the dating game.”

“No, not all. I actually chatted with her over the instant messaging system the other day; she was really nice and
funny. There’s nothing better than a girl with a witty sense of humor.”

“Oh, yes there is! A girl with a body like that. I’d say that body is better than any humor she has.”

“She was fun to talk to. I asked her out for a drink, but she hasn’t replied. In fact, her whole profile disappeared after I asked her out. It’s back now, though; maybe I’ll message her again. What do you think?”

  “Can I speak honestly, Brandon?”

  “Yeah, dude, of course.”

“A girl like that, with photos like that on her page, she’s probably looking for a sugar daddy and not an actual relationship. Those websites are filled with girls like that. They tease you with hot photos and then barely look like that in person. They will ask for some sort of allowance for their time, like they are literally God’s gift to you.”

“What? No, she didn’t seem like that kind of girl. Here, let me show you the other photos she’s got on here.”

I totally understood where Josh was coming from. There were probably a lot of girls on the site who were interested in being arm candy for rich men. Delilah and I had only had a brief conversation, but I’d reviewed her profile and she just didn’t seem like the money-hungry type. Admittedly, I didn’t know her well, but I was typically a good judge of character.

I pulled up her profile and gave Josh the chance to read through it and look at the photos. Certainly, he could tell that she was just a normal girl looking for love. Delilah’s profile was well thought out and funny. She had obviously taken some time to fill out all the questions and to put her best foot forward, and I appreciated that.

  “Oh, you’re getting a message.”

“Is it from her?” I darted back to my computer from the kitchen.

“Nope, it’s from an equally hot brunette.”

  Kimberly: Hey, doll!

Brandon: Hi, how are you? You sure look sexy as hell.

“Come on now. We don’t need to be talking to this one; she’s only twenty,” I laughed at the idea.

Women that young were beautiful to look at and I’d even had a few of them in my bed before, but they were not exactly dating material. In fact, I couldn’t imagine any circumstance where a girl as young as that would be someone I wanted to actually date. Sure, I’d have a hell of a night in bed with her, but I was actually looking for something more for the time being.

I’d looked to date since my divorce and I’d tried to go out with a few women, but I really had not been ready.

Now, I was different. My ex-wife had moved on, I was over my intense grief about losing my son, and the idea of a real relationship seemed good to me. It still probably wouldn’t last more than a few weeks, but I was willing to give it a try.

Kimberly: Would you like to meet up sometime?

“Look, she’s an independent woman asking you out first,” Josh said as he shook his head approvingly at the brunette woman’s profile.

“I think this is one of those girls looking for a sugar daddy, Josh.”

“I don’t know, she seems nice,” he laughed.

“Write back that I want to meet.”

Brandon: Would you like to go to drinks sometime?

Kimberly: Actually, it works best if we go somewhere where we can talk. How about donuts over on Sunset?

Brandon: When is a good time for you?

  Kimberly: I could do tomorrow.

Brandon: Sure, how about 9:00 in the morning?

Kimberly: Sounds great. If you have a contract I’ll need to sign regarding non-disclosures, please bring it with you. I’ll want to have my lawyer review it before I sign. Also, my minimum allowance is $5,000 a month, and that’s for one visit/date/event each week; if you want me on a more permanent basis, we will need to negotiate the rate.

“Oh, man!” I burst out laughing.

“Wow, she’s got this business down!” Josh said as his hands went behind his head and he leaned back in the chair. “She makes more money than I do some months.”

“Now that is an official sugar baby.”

“Wow, she has no shame, no qualms about asking for what she wants. She’s bold,” he said as he continued to laugh. “Maybe I should ask her out. No, I’m kidding. I can’t afford her.”

“I really don’t have an issue with girls doing that. I mean, you know there are guys out there that have no problem dropping some cash to make sure their date goes smoothly or to have a hot piece of ass on their arm for a charity event. Not really my style, but I don’t have anything against people who do that. Tell her no thank you.”

Brandon: Sorry, I’m not interested in that sort of relationship. Best of luck.

We could see that Kimberly was typing a message and both leaned in to see what her response was going to be. The anticipation was killing me as she typed and then backed out of the message, then started to type again.

Kimberly: I hate to disappoint you, but most of the women on here are looking for an arrangement. Why else would a guy like you be looking to date someone as young as I am?

“Oh, man,” Josh said. “She’s onto you.”

“Me! You’re the one who replied to her. Just say goodbye.”

“Maybe she’s right, Brandon. Maybe that other girl is also looking for an arrangement, but is more discreet than this girl? The blonde did look really familiar to me.”

“Because you hang around women looking for financial arrangements often?” I joked.

“No, I swear I’ve seen her, but I just can’t place her face.”

Brandon: Have a nice day. Again, best of luck on finding what you’re looking for.

“She did look familiar to me, too. Not super familiar, though; at least I’m sure I’ve never slept with her.”

“Oh, well, at least you’re sure of that.”

Josh clicked on Delilah’s profile again as he scrolled through her photos. I had the feeling she and I had connected somewhere recently, I just couldn’t remember where or when I had seen her. I also didn’t think I’d actually talked to her, so maybe I had just seen her in passing.

“Where does she work?” I asked.

“It doesn’t say. Was she at that art show we went to the other day?”

“Oh, shit, you know what? I think you’re right. Pull up her hobbies again.”

“Yep, there you go. But, wow, if she was there, why weren’t you talking to her? You did talk to a lot of women that night.”

“Josh, you remember that girl who looked like she was going to murder the guy who grabbed her arm? That was her. I swear it was.”

“Oh, yeah! I see it now. She was hot!”

“See, so she’s not one of these girls who are looking for some sort of financial arrangement,” I replied in a bit of relief. “If she was at the art show, she probably has her own money and was looking to buy a painting herself. Maybe she’s even wealthier than I am.”

I was excited about the idea of going on a date with this girl. Not only would she be a hell of fun in the sack, she seemed to be pretty witty and able to hold a good conversation, too. She was beautiful and might also have money, so we wouldn’t have to worry about that as an issue.

“I hate to break it to you, but I’m even more convinced now that she’s one of these girls who wants to date for money. A party full of rich guys is the perfect place for a sugar baby to get hooked up with someone.”

“What are you talking about?” I protested. “She was at the art show, just like us.”

“Exactly. You were there because you have a bazillion dollars and they wanted you to buy stuff. I was there as your guest.

“Why would she be there? Unless she’s rich like you, it’s pretty damn hard to get an invite to such an expensive art collection showing. Do you really think she has your kind of money and you’ve never heard of her? You knew almost everyone who was wealthy at that event.”

  “Maybe she works there?”

“Maybe, or maybe she’s a sugar baby? Just keep your eye opened and… Oh, look what we have here – she is just logg
ing in. It has a green bubble by her name.”

  “Did she message me back?”

“Dude, you aren’t a teenager; come do this yourself. I’m getting back to my investing.”

“I’d rather do it myself,” I grumbled. “What should I say? I already asked her out and she ignored the message and got offline.”

“I’m sure you’ll think of something.”

  Brandon: Hey, how’s your day?

She didn’t respond. I wasn’t used to getting rejected by women and certainly wasn’t used to being ignored. I racked my brain to think of anything I might have said during our last online conversation, but I had totally behaved myself.

I found myself sitting at my laptop staring at the screen as I waited for her to respond. If she was one of those girls who just wanted a rich guy to give her an allowance, she wasn’t doing a very good job of hitting me up for money. If she was just a regular girl, I couldn’t figure out why she wouldn’t respond to me.

As I watched Josh get into his investing, it was easy to be envious of him. He really loved what he was doing and was really good at it.

I had felt like that while running my company, but after selling it, I was left with a big hole of time that I hadn’t quite figured out what to do with yet. Learning how to invest my own money was simply a place holder while I tried to figure out what my next big adventure was going to be.

One of the things I was lucky enough to learn right away in business was that I had to be passionate about what I was doing or it wasn’t going to work. I thought if I loved my job enough, then I’d never really be working, and it was the truth. I comfortably worked up to 15 hours a day because I worked from my phone, laptop, and airplanes. I wasn’t confined to an office, and I set my own rules for how I wanted things done. It had been one of the big keys to my success. I’d never have worked so hard if I hadn’t been passionate about what I was doing.
