“I miss him too. Maybe we can get him sent up soon.”
“Don’t bother guys. I’m here!” Scooter squealed in his little mechanical voice.
Harry couldn’t believe his ears. To his surprise and delight, there stood Scooter wearing his little Bass King cap. “How, Scooter?”
“May, the maintenance computer, and I had a little talk the night before you left, and I convinced her to let me board to do some maintenance.”
“Sounds like skullduggery to me,” Ronnie joked.
“Well, I hope you don’t mind me stowing away, Harry. I had to come with you.”
“I’m just happy you’re here, regardless of how.”
Scooter replied, “Me too! I think the fishing is going to be great.”
“I assure you, we’ll check it out.”
“I did bring my fishing gear,” Scooter confessed. “Took a bit of doing, I’ll tell you that.”
Harry laughed. “I can’t imagine you leaving your tackle behind.”
As they admired the view together, Harry gazed at his friends. “You know, everything would be complete if Wanda had been able to make the trip with us. I just can’t imagine what happened to her.”
“Did you ever find any trace of her?” Ronnie asked.
“Nothing at all.”
Scooter reached up and took Harry’s hand, then stared at Carmen. If the little robot could have smiled, he would have.
Carmen listened silently trying to make up her mind, wanting to say something, fighting her emotions. After careful consideration, she decided her mother’s advice was sound. Responding to a tug at her coat, she saw Scooter extending his hand. Her heart leaped as she felt the little knowing squeeze from him.
He knows.
The six of them watched the sunrise on the new world and a new beginning.

Bio
My professional career focused on research and development and managing high technology defense programs. Perhaps the most satisfying was the years I spent as a subject matter expert and engineering consultant for the navy working in night vision and fire control systems with the Navy Seals and Rangers.
I currently live in retirement with my wife on a small horse farm in North Texas raising quarter horses, Arabians and donkeys. Our resident watch dogs include Lexie, a German Shepherd, Diva, our beautiful Collie and Happy, part coyote and part chow. We call him Cousin It. I wanted to name our little farm Green Acres II, but my spouse objected. We finally agreed on the name Shadow Run, after our favorite mare.
