“Strip me,” Vivienne said, looking up at him from beneath her lashes. Jos, his face serious, nodded.

  “Are you sure, Viv?”

“Take my clothes off,” she ordered, and he laughed and complied, kissing every part of exposed skin as he stripped her. When she was naked, he dropped to his knees as if worshipping her and pressed his lips to her belly.

  “God, Viv …”

“Fuck me, Jos,” she said, her body vibrating with her desire, “Fuck me hard …”

With a growl, he swept her off her feet onto the bed, pulling his own clothes off. His body was a hard and taut as a twenty-year-old’s, his cock huge and proud against his belly. Vivienne took it into her mouth, trailing her tongue up and down the long, thick shaft until Jos groaned.

“I want to be inside you …”

He drew away and hitched her legs around his waist, his hand slipping between her legs. “You’re so wet, baby.”

He thrust his cock into her, hard, and Vivienne gasped at the sensations that shot through her. She had been fooling herself that Rolando could have ever matched up to this man. Jos fucked her slowly at first, drinking her in, and watching her breasts, her belly undulating beneath him. Vivienne reveled in the admiration and lust in his eyes, and more than that, that the connection they had felt all those years ago had only lain dormant and was now flooding back through both of them.

She came, stars exploding in her vision as he pumped creamy cum deep inside her. She tightened her thighs around him, not wanting to let go. “Jesus, Viv,” he said as her vaginal muscles contracted around his cock. “Milk me dry, baby. That’s it.”

She felt him get hard again after a few minutes and she grinned at the power she had over him. He pinned her hands to the bed, but she could tell he was at her mercy. They fucked savagely, long into the night, and it was dawn before they parted, collapsing side by side on the bed.

For a few minutes, they lay there, panting, and gazing at each other before both of them started to laugh. “Now, that was a reunion,” Jos quipped, and Vivienne laughed.

“I’m glad we got the awkward part out of the way,” Viv said dryly and smiled. “Seriously …am I crazy? It was never that …intense before, was it? I mean it was incredible, but now …?”

“We’re older, wiser, and we have no fucks left to give. So to speak,” Jos grinned, and Viv rolled over onto her stomach, leaning over to kiss him.

“You’re different,” she mused, studying his face. “You’re less uptight, more devil-may-care than I remember.”

Jos shrugged. “I think I am. I spent twenty years thinking about what might have been while my marriage was imploding …she told me she was sick. The day after she came to see you. She told me she had cancer. It was a lie, of course.”

  Vivienne was shocked. “God, no.”

Josiah rolled onto his side to face her. “I was dumb enough to believe her …or rather, weak enough.”

Vivienne sighed. “You had a child. You had to stay for Shelby. I bet she’s glad you did.”

“You would like her. She doesn’t have her mother’s need for attention. Shelby’s a geek, through and through.” Jos sounded so proud that Vivienne couldn’t help but smile.

“So,” she said, changing the subject, “My best friend calls in a favor with Benoit and gets you to Paris.”

Josiah grinned. “I was here scouting for land. That part was true. But Benoit was quick to –mention—and by mention, I mean hammer into me—that you were in town. Your friend, Elli, happened to know where your apartment was.”

“The quisling.” Vivienne mock-glowered. “She is so fired.” She immediately wished she hadn’t said that because Jos looked uncomfortable and she realized he knew about Italia Mondo and the news story. She sighed. “That story killed my career, I guess.”

Josiah sat up. “No. No, it didn’t, Viv, and I could tell the moment I saw you in that café, you were lost. But your career and your talent transcend a sleazy and untrue story like that. If the board at Italia Mondo can’t see that, it’s their loss. Viv …there’s another reason I wanted to see you. Even before that story broke and you were still in Venice, I had been trying to persuade myself to come see you because I had a business proposition for you. A job that I would only trust you to do.”

Vivienne smiled but looked skeptical, and he laughed. “I know. It sounds too convenient, but it’s the truth. Viv, I’m making a run for the Washington congressional seat.”

Vivienne gaped at him. “Really? Wow, Jos …wow.” She was completely caught off-guard. He’d never mentioned any political ambitions to her. But you haven’t seen him for twenty years, idiot …

  “That’s wonderful, Jos, really.”

He grinned at her expression. “I know what you’re thinking—oh right, another unqualified businessman getting involved in US politics? Not like that. Viv …I went back to school, got a political science degree, and between working, I’ve been learning the business of politics, studying my heroes, and even shadowing some of them. I’ve talked to people and thrown everything into this. I want to be the change.”

Vivienne was touched. “My own personal Gandhi.”

He swept his hand over her hair. “And I want you by my side when I do. I mean …not a like a Jackie Kennedy thing, but as my Communications Director. I can’t think of anyone better—especially given your commentary on and engagement with Italian politics over the years. Obviously …there’s you and me to consider, and I would like to see where it goes with us. Today has shown me that, dang it, I’ve had enough of waiting for you. There’s never been anyone to touch you, Viv and that’s the truth. Come back to the US with me and let’s change the world. Let’s be happy, and busy, and do something together.”

Vivienne blinked, her eyes full of tears. Had this really all happened in a few hours? Her mind was whirling and she pressed her fingers to her temples. Josiah was offering her a totally new life.

Jos, watching her, took her face in his hands. “There’s no reason you should believe anything I say after what I did to you …but Viv …take the leap.” He pressed his lips to hers and Vivienne sighed into the kiss. Could she? Could she leave everything she had built in Venice to go back to the States and start over?

Take the leap …take the leap …

  Two years later …

  Olympia, Washington State

They were all transfixed as they waited for the results to come in. The election had been on a knife edge between Josiah Merchant and Fintan Rogers, and it was down to the last few precincts to declare.

Vivienne slipped her hand into her husband’s. Josiah looked down at her, a smile on his face. “Whatever happens,” he said in a low voice, “now we’re together. We can handle anything.”

“Damn right.” Vivienne had loved the campaign—the way she got to use her considerable intelligence to fend off the hungry press or to hit back at opposition slurs. She had surprised herself with how much she loved it.

And being back in the States had been her lifeline to get her confidence back. She missed Elli, Indio, and their two children—baby Florentina was now almost a –toddler—and the rest of her friends in Italy, but being with Josiah, here in their new home on Bainbridge Island, had been heaven.

She had married Josiah six months after returning from Paris, in a small ceremony with just them and two witnesses. They had returned to Paris to honeymoon and they had gone back to the café where they had been reunited to toast their wedding. Vivienne marveled that one small decision to have a glass of wine there had led her to change her entire life.

So, now, in a few minutes, they would know …Josiah bent his head and kissed her softly. “I love you, Vivienne Marche.”

“As I love you, Josiah Merchant.”

As the crowd in the ballroom began to cheer as the results came in, she grinned up at him. “I mean …I am so in love with you …Congressman …”
