“As long as you fuckin’ go and make sure she all right.”

“I swear I will. I don’t want anything to happen to Roxy.”

  “Fuck, fine. Let Mort know.”

After walking Johnnie out, Christopher headed to the staircase. Just as he started up, CJ lifted his head from Christopher’s shoulder.

“I tired, ‘Law,” he said sleepily.

“I know, boy. I’m bringin’ you to bed, now.”

  “Want MegAnn.”

Fuck. As much as he wanted to deny the request, Christopher couldn’t. That meant, he probably wouldn’t get a chance to finish what the fuck CJ had interrupted earlier.

Fuck it. He’d find some fucking way to amuse himself. His son needed Megan more than Christopher did at the moment.

  Chapter Eight

Roxy accepted her second glass of wine from the server and sipped. It was sweet and cold, just the way she liked it. All through dinner, she reminded herself she was there to do a job for Outlaw, not to be tempted by a pair of amber eyes and thick, blond hair that reminded her of wheat fields in the summer.

Knox was a charmer when he wanted to be. It had been so long since she’d had any attention from the opposite sex, since she’d been on a date, she thought she might’ve forgotten what to do.

He’d made some very pointed jabs at her and it surprised her how his words had gotten to her. Maybe, it was because she was slightly attracted to him and she wanted him to see something different in her. What, she wasn’t sure.

Besides, he was one arrogant motherfucker who needed to be brought down a peg or two. He was also shit at being undercover. He’d been at the club two weeks and had already blown his cover. It would be fucking funny if it wasn’t so fucking pitiful.

However, the restaurant was nice and upscale, one she might have to visit again.

“Tell me, Roxy,” he started. “Where do you fit in at the club? What’s your role?”

Oh, so he was trying to ferret information from her on the sly. All through dinner they’d talked sports and shared travel stories. He’d evaded her questions about himself quite well. Now, he was getting down and dirty, pretending interest.

“I don’t have a role,” she said, deciding to follow his lead to see how far he went. “I’m Bailey’s mom. I offer advice to the other girls as needed.”

“Interesting. And the guys? Do you offer them advice?”

She shrugged. “Not very often. They usually go to Outlaw.”

“Uh-huh, I see,” he said, sounding very official. “How long have you known him?”

“Several years,” she answered, making it a point to not go into detail. She wouldn’t give up any more information than what he asked for. “Why?”

“Just wondering,” he said with a wave of his hand. “I’ve been hearing talk around the club.”

  She’d take the bait. “About?”

“Outlaw, of course. Brooks said Val calls him Psycho Stalker Wildman.”

Since it wasn’t a question, Roxy had fuck-all to say. She tasted her wine again.

“Er, I also heard Brooks ran into some trouble with Outlaw. That’s why he’s at the club.”

  Still, no question.

“Do you know anything about that?”

Setting her glass aside, she gave him an under-eyed look. “Did you bring me on a date for me or for…?”

He leaned forward and tucked hair behind her ear. “For you, of course. I’d just like to know the type of men I’m around on a daily basis. Outlaw’s the president, so I wanted to know a little about him.”

  “Why don’t you ask him?”

Knox unbuttoned his cuffs and rolled his sleeves, revealing strong arms. “He doesn’t like me.”

“You must’ve given him a reason not to.”

He looked at her expectantly, as if he wanted her to continue. When she didn’t, he gnashed his teeth together.

Serene, Roxy drank again, while Knox squeezed the bridge of his nose.

“Did you really punch Brooks’ wife?”

  “Yep.”

“Would you expand on some of your answers, please?”

“Nope, and frankly, a motherfucker who’s always asking questions doesn’t know how to hold a conversation. I’m answering what you’re asking and you’re asking yes or no questions.”

“Damn it, woman, but you’re frustrating.”

  “Says you.”

His gaze dropped to her mouth. Deciding to have fun, Roxy licked her lips. She liked the way his eyes darkened at her gesture.

“Would you like to have a drink at my place?”

She smirked at him. “Trying to get me tipsy, Knox?”

“Maybe,” he responded. “Why don’t you accept my offer and find out?”

“I think I will,” she said, telling herself this, too, was on Outlaw’s behalf but recognizing it for the lie that it was. She liked the banter, the battle of wills, she and Knox engaged in and wasn’t yet ready for it to end tonight.

The artwork and expensive furnishings at Knox’s house surprised Roxy. He lived in a modest neighborhood, but his décor belonged in an upscale place.

“Excuse me for a moment?” he said as he guided her to the sofa.

  “Sure, take your time.”

Once he left, Roxy pulled up her GPS, since she wasn’t quite sure where she was. Obtaining the address, she texted it to Outlaw. Maybe, they could get inside while Knox was at the clubhouse and search the premises.

“I’m back,” Knox announced, walking into her line of vision.

Roxy’s mouth fell open at the sight of his bare chest, dusted with blond hair and rippling with muscles. He reminded her of an Olympian. He sat next to her and tugged her into his arms.

“I thought I’d get things going.”

Not giving her a chance to respond, his mouth descended on hers, the scent of his cologne heavier than before. At first, she resisted. She didn’t want to get too caught up in the moment and needed to process why he’d immediately remove his shirt. But at the firmness of his lips pressing into her, she relented and relaxed against him, opening up for him.

Touching the hair at his nape, she tangled her tongue with his, tasting mint with an underlay of the orange liqueur he’d had at dinner. She ran her fingers along his arms, down his chest, and to his abs, allowing herself this small piece of heaven for just a moment.

“Ummmm,” she murmured, ending the kiss. “That was nice.”

He grabbed her hand and brought it to his cock. It was hard and big, tempting her to indulge. “I have something even nicer.”

She pulled her hand away. “Feels like you do. But not tonight. Maybe, some other time. You need a little more finesse than running to your room and removing your shirt. You should’ve let things progress naturally. Let me remove your shirt, if I wanted to see your chest. You ran out of here like you had something to hide,” she teased, a niggling thought breaking through her brain.

Knox guided her hand over his chest. “What would I have to hide? I wanted to cool off and add a little more cologne for your enjoyment.”

He’d been wired, just as Outlaw suspected. That was the only reason for Knox’s action. No man with any sense would do the shit he had and expect to get laid.

She scooted away from him and ran her fingers through her hair. “I’m ready to leave, Knox. I’m tired.”

Real, true disappointment crossed his face.

  “Stay, for one more drink.”

“No.” She stood and headed for the door. “If you don’t want to take me home, I’ll get there myself.”

“No! I didn’t mean that. It’s just…Damn it!” He shoved his hands in his pockets. “I enjoyed myself a lot.”

  “You sound surprised.”

He flushed. “I usually reserve the loudmouths for the bedroom only. I like the quiet ones. Younger than me.” He scrubbed a hand over his face. “I truly enjoyed crossing swords with you.”

She cocked her head to the side. “Why take me out if I don’
t fit your type?”

Suddenly, he couldn’t look at her. “I don’t know.”

Hands on hips, she faced him. “Well, I do. You thought I’d be an easy lay. Sorry not to bust your nuts, but I need a little more than a nice dinner and a hot kiss.”

“Could we go on another date?”

“Why? I’m sure the fuck not going to suddenly become younger than you. I’ll always be ten years older.” She lifted her chin. “And I went into early menopause because of my treatments, so what do you have to say about that?”

He frowned at her. “Nothing. I just…there’s so much I need to learn. Uh, so much I want to learn about you.”

Her momma always told her to listen to a person’s words, as much as the tone. A lot of information could be picked up by paying attention. Liars could say the sky was blue and they wouldn’t find anyone to believe them, even it was blue.

Roxy heard what Knox hadn’t said. He wanted sex with her because he was a man being guided by his dick, not because he was particularly attracted to her. This was all just a game to him, so she’d just have to play him as he insisted on playing her.

  Chapter Nine

Knox lay in bed, staring into the darkness and thinking of the evening he’d spent with Roxy. Her differences from the other women he usually dated had nothing to do with the fact that she was older than him. As she’d said, age was only a number. It was her realness. She was blunt and open, to the point of being crass. Yet, even that set her apart.

Next date, he was sure he’d get her into bed. Tame her a little. He’d never had any complaints as a lover. Once he gave her an orgasm, she’d relent and soften her attitude. He’d give her what she needed. She’d give him what he wanted.

He had a goal to have this completed by New Year’s Day. This would be the second holiday season without his son, and he wanted to work as much as possible to keep his mind occupied.

A sound caught Knox’s attention and he sat up, sure he’d heard his door opening. His mother kept insisting he needed an alarm if he wanted to live in a working-class neighborhood. He always brushed her off. She was a first-rate snob.

Opening his nightstand drawer to get his gun, Knox just had time to grab it before his bedroom door opened and the overhead light switched on.

“Drop the motherfucker,” Outlaw ordered, pointing a nine millimeter at Knox’s head.

Knox debated on whether or not to risk aiming and firing. Outlaw’s nine cocked.

“I’ma blow you the fuck away if you don’t drop the motherfucker now.”

The man was serious. Swallowing, Knox laid his gun next to him and raised his hands. Outlaw walked forward and jammed his weapon against Knox’s temple.

“You a fuckin’ funny motherfucker, comin’ on to my girl right the fuck in front of me. I ain’t able to do fuck all then. Now, I’m fuckin’ you up. This a warning, yeah? Next time, I’m cuttin’ your cock off, feedin’ it to you, and then blowin’ you the fuck away. Hear me?”

Knox nodded slowly, afraid to move a muscle. The leashed fury in the motorcycle man’s voice shook him up. Not because he was a wimp. At least, he didn’t think he was. But if he was killed, he’d go missing as Kyler Charles had, and no one would know where to start searching.

“Roxy gave you my address, huh?” he asked, feeling betrayed for some reason.

“Ain’t seen her since she left the clubhouse. But you a fuckin’ stranger. You think we lettin’ her the fuck outta our sight without a tail?”

  Fuck.

“Listen, let’s reason this out like sensible men.”

“Ain’t you fuckin’ heard, assfuck? My ass ain’t sensible when it fuckin’ come to Megan. You ain’t fuckin’ with her and expectin’ to live.”

Of course he’d heard that. That’s why he’d goaded him. It seems he’d also underestimated Outlaw. He’d shown more than a little restraint while Knox had been wired. Instead, waiting to catch him at a vulnerable moment, when he was completely undressed…

Oh, fuck. Had Knox somehow blown his cover? No, that couldn’t be. He had the education and the law enforcement training. Kendall’s face rose in his head. No, she wouldn’t have gone to Outlaw, either. They hated each other.

So what…A punch to the side of his head knocked all other thoughts away. Before he had a chance to recover, Outlaw hit him again. And again. And again.

  And again.

Doubling over, Knox vomited, as the blows moved from his face and head to his stomach, ending with a vicious elbow to his groin that made him scream like a girl.

“Now, motherfucker, we fuckin’ even. You like livin’, there’s a few things you ain’t ever fuckin’ doin a-fuckin-gain. Top of the list, leave Megan the fuck alone. Second, I call you the fuck over, you come. You ain’t fuckin’ disrespectin’ me, motherfucker.” Grabbing Knox’s hair, Outlaw yanked his head back and shoved the gun in his mouth. “And motherfuckin’ three,” he spat in a low tone, close to Knox’s ear, “I fuckin’ find out you fuckin’ over me, I’m cuttin’ you the fuck up while you still fuckin’ alive. Don’t ever, ever bitch me out the fuck again.”

With that, Outlaw decked Knox so hard that he flew out of the bed and everything faded to black.

When Knox opened his eyes, he squinted at the bright light. He ached from his head to his toes. He had limited vision, so he was sure one eye was swollen shut. Grabbing the side of the bed, he staggered to his feet and drew in a deep breath at the pain careening through him.

He could always go to the cops. He still had a slew of friends on the force. He had connections. Except he doubted that was a good idea without proof that Outlaw was responsible. His uncle’s investigation would be compromised, and the greater goal of justice and vengeance on behalf of all the partners would be unattainable. Possessed with self-righteous anger, Knox called Cam and filled him in before dressing—with his wire—and heading to the club. In the few days he’d been around, he knew Megan would be there preparing breakfast.

This morning was no different. She stood next to her husband, who sat amidst his officers, stroking his nape as he had an arm wrapped around her swollen waist. Catching sight of Knox limping in their direction, her blue eyes widened.

“What the fuck you did to Roxy for her to fuck you up like that?” Mortician asked with a grin.

  The others snickered.

Knox’s gaze fell on Outlaw’s bruised knuckles. “Roxy didn’t do this to me,” he said stiffly, barely able to move his mouth because of his split lip. “She wouldn’t.”

Val lifted a brow. “You don’t know her real well then.”

Knox nodded toward the president. “How did you get your injuries to your hands? You look like you were in a brutal fight.”

Outlaw smirked at him. “Busted my fuckin’ fingers fuckin’ around with my ride.”

  “Is that so?” Knox sneered.

“What are you suggesting?” Johnnie asked with narrowed eyes.

“Yeah,” Outlaw broke in. “What the fuck you sayin’? You hintin’ that my ass fucked you the fuck up?”

“That’s impossible,” Megan offered. “Christopher was home all night.”

Knowing he wouldn’t get anywhere with them, Knox turned. He needed to leave and re-think his position. With his mind focused on the situation, he didn’t notice Roxy until he bumped into her. He grabbed her to steady her.

This morning, she had a scarf tied around her head and wore no make-up, looking fresh-faced and well-rested.

“What the fuck happened to you?” she asked, her eyes wide.

“As if you don’t fucking know,” he snarled, in pain and irritated at being one-upped by Outlaw. At least, for the time being. Besides, they were very protective of her. Calling her out might draw Outlaw out and make him restate his claim that he’d had her followed and learned Knox’s address that way. “You’re the bitch who gave him my address.”

“This motherfucker didn’t just insult my momma-in-law,” Mortician growled, getting to his feet.

  “St
ay there,” Roxy demanded. “I can handle him my own damn self.”

For a moment, she looked shocked at Knox’s outburst. He swore he also saw a touch of hurt in her eyes before fury covered her face and she kneed him in his already abused cock.

“Fuck you, motherfucker. I’m not the bitch to call out her fucking name. I’ll cut the fuck out of you.”

Gasping for breath, Knox dropped to his knees. He couldn’t form words as he held his dick and let tears slip from his eyes. He’d never be able to piss again. Not to mention fucking.

The worst part of the entire humiliating situation was not a single person offered to help him. They allowed him to moan and writhe in pain for however long it took him to catch his breath and get control again.

Roxy loomed above him, hands on hips, legs braced apart, giving him a clear view up her skirt. The pretty lacy panties she wore should’ve aroused him, but she’d ruined him with her knee. He rested his cheek on her foot.

“You call yourself a bitch,” he somehow got out. “What difference does it make if I call you one?”

“I can call myself whatever the fuck I want. You cross the fucking line when you call me out my name.”

Feeling a little stronger, Knox raised up and grabbed a chair before pulling himself to his feet. “You also call me out of my name. You call me a motherfucker more than you call me Knox.”

She shrugged. “Purely a pet name.”

  “Bullshit.”

The door opened and three kids bounded in, along with another beautiful woman, carrying a little blond boy. The kid with the black hair and green eyes, the oldest of them, stopped in front of him and looked him up and down. Peeping around him, he spied Roxy and smiled, then studied Knox again, as the other little black haired boy and blonde headed girl flanked him.

“That’s Mr. Knox, CJ,” Megan called.

“’Law say you a dumm ashfuck.”

“Get the fuck over here, boy,” Outlaw demanded.

CJ sidled another glare at Knox. “MegAnn my mommie and ‘Law sweet angel, ashfuck,” he warned.
