“I’ll show you,” she said. She stood up, glanced behind herself, and tumbled out of the collenna.

“Sesskia!” he shouted, nearly falling out himself. They were going at such a speed that she was a tiny figure in his wake before he could do more than that. Then she vanished. He looked around wildly, saw a figure in the distance ahead, and had just enough time to see her wave at him before he left her behind again. Astounded, he watched her vanish and reappear half a dozen more times before the collenna’s magic drained enough to slow down so she could climb back in.

“Amazing, yes?” she said, a little breathlessly.

“Please give me time to restrain my urge to shout at you for leaping from a moving collenna,” he said.

“Oh, it wasn’t dangerous. Not very dangerous, anyway,” Sesskia scoffed. “It’s range of vision, more or less—I can flit up to three miles if I have an unobstructed line of sight, and it takes a total of five seconds to go that far.”

“Remarkable,” Cederic said. He could be amazed now that his terror over Sesskia’s stunt was fading. “We cannot do anything like that. We know the knowledge once existed, but no one has been able to reconstruct the kathana. If ever there were a pouvra I would want to see turned into a kathana, that would be the one.”

“Do you think it’s possible? Pouvrin into kathanas, I mean?”

“If you can create a pouvra from a kathana, I see no reason why the opposite could not happen.”

She snuggled back under his arm. “Damn the God-Empress anyway. She keeps interfering in our lives.”

He held her tight. “In a few days, it will all be over.” One way or another.
