Now, let’s get on with the story...

The wolf that was Cassie ran through the desert scrub following a scent she had detected. It was faint but it was there. The cool sand and rock felt good on her paws but the frigid desert air was kept at bay by her thick, black coat of fur with the white patch on her back. Cassie scanned ahead with her emerald green eyes, the moon illuminating the landscape like it was day but Cassie was a wolf and she could see well even on a moonless night.

The scent was stronger and now she scented fear as well. Cassie ran even faster, sure her quarry was just ahead. Then the jackrabbit darted from behind a mesquite bush kicking up a cloud of dust as it tried to escape the predator that followed. Wolves were foreign to this place but rabbits, even as dumb as they were, knew well enough to run. The jackrabbit scurried this way and that, unsure of which way to go. Cassie could smell her victim clearly and could almost hear the rabbit’s heart beating out of its chest.

Cassie closed the distance and now she could scent the dust and sand stirred by the jackrabbit’s passing. Her tongue lolled from her mouth, salivating in anticipation of the kill. As a woman, Cassie would find the fresh kill distasteful but as the wolf, she found it intoxicating. Just a moment more and she would taste the sinewy meat and warm blood. But Cassie sensed something, detected the scent too late. She saw the shadowy beast out of the corner of her eye and slid to a stop to avoid a collision with the animal.

The beast seized the rabbit in its gleaming white teeth, shook the rodent to death and then dropped it to the ground. The wolf that was Yeager turned his big head to regard the black wolf that was Cassie, a hint of mischief in his amber eyes. Cassie growled at her mate but he picked the rabbit up and tossed it towards her and then sat and waited. Cassie sniffed the dead jackrabbit before she placed a paw on its carcass and tore into its flesh savoring the fresh kill.

At least the wolf that was Yeager let her take the first bite even if he had denied her the kill...again. Cassie found that as the wolf she had instincts and skills she did not as a human. But it had barely been three moons since she discovered her gift and she still had much to learn. Yeager had been a shifter his whole life and he had yet to reveal all of his secrets to her. But after Cassie devoured her share of the kill, she would coax more from her mate after they become human again. In that world, she knew how to get what she wanted from Yeager.

Yeager came closer and sniffed at the dead rodent. Cassie growled and he backed away. It was a game, the way wolves related to one another. Cassie and her mate, Yeager, were both alphas but fate had brought them together and they each respected the other but neither submitted either. They were lovers, partners and friends. They were mates for life. Cassie finished feeding and tossed the carcass towards Yeager, smiling at him with her green eyes. He smiled back with his amber eyes and bent to feed on the kill.

  ~~O~~

I shifted into my human form, my curvy body kneeling on the sand, the night air now cold against my naked flesh. “I’m cold. Come warm me up,” I offered my mate as I brushed my black hair with the shock of white from my eyes. The silvery grey wolf looked up from the kill swallowing the last bite and shifted as well. The biker appeared before me, on all fours, his tall, athletic form causing a pleasant tingle between my creamy thighs.

  “You’re not mad?” he asked.

“What, that you stole my kill...again?” I replied. Yeager laughed.

“You’re still too slow. You’ll learn to beat me to the punch,” Yeager told me.

“I let you get the rabbit, you know that?” I bluffed.

“Sure you did,” Yeager replied skeptically. I smiled and leaned forward to kiss my mate. As our lips met, that familiar and overpowering sensation stole my breath. The kiss of a shifter that made me forget who I was and caused my knees to go weak. Yeager’s strong hand reached out and squeezed my full breast as he pushed me down onto my back. Yeager bared his wolf fangs as he entered me. I rarely needed or wanted any foreplay after running with Yeager as a wolf. I needed it hard, my time as a wolf still fresh in my mind. Yeager didn’t need any help either. His hard manhood slid into my wet tunnel without resistance. I gasped as he thrust into me and showed him my own sharp canines.

“You sexy fur ball,” he said as he built up a head of steam and I wrapped my shapely legs about his fit torso.

“Make it hurt, old man,” I urged him playfully. He knew what I meant and Yeager grew within me. I threw my arms around my mate as he dragged his sharp teeth over my soft neck. That familiar urge built within me as Yeager fucked me with an urgency we both felt. I arched as the spasms took me, the pleasure coursing through my veins. “Yes, yes, Yeager, yes!” I shouted not caring who heard though there were few people about in this desolate place.

“Come for me, Cassie. Scream for me,” he urged. I didn’t need any urging to comply with his wishes. I was already in the throes of another climax, screaming despite myself. Yeager tensed and I could feel his impending need. I grabbed his face roughly and forced him to look at me.

“Oh no you don’t,” I scolded him. Yeager smiled as I pushed him off of me. A night as wolves, running through our desert home, chasing rabbits and tasting blood always left us both aroused once we shifted but that didn’t mean Yeager didn’t have to satisfy me fully before he enjoyed his own release.

“Fine, fine. Give me a moment,” he told me but I wasn’t having any of it.

“No, you find a way to resist. Think about elderly nuns or something,” I told him. Yeager smiled, amused by my suggestion.

“You’re insatiable,” was all he said as I pushed him onto his back, turned away from him and impaled myself on his large, wolf-like shaft. Damn, that felt good. Yeager’s hands found my lush behind and squeezed but I had a little treat for him. I sprouted my fluffy tail that turned Yeager on so much and wagged it as I bounced on top of him. He growled like a wolf as I looked back over my shoulder.

  “Like that?” I asked playfully.

  “You’re not helping,” he complained.

“Baseball, my mate, baseball,” I suggested and turned my attention back to enjoying Yeager’s amazing cock. It didn’t take long and I was climaxing again. The need was deep. It always was after running as a wolf. I reached between my thighs and found my hot nub, rubbing it furiously as a wild orgasm hit me like a freight train. I shrieked as Yeager slapped my big ass with both hands and then massaged my reddening flesh.

I continued to ride Yeager, enjoying several delicious orgasms along the way until Yeager would not be denied any longer. Suddenly, he pushed me forward onto my hands, climbed from under me and got to his knees behind me. He slammed into me, his hips hammering into my bountiful behind. I could feel his need as he bent over me and pushed my head to the ground. Now he was on his feet, driving into me hard and fast, his desire to gain his own release unstoppab
le.

Then he grabbed my tail and tugged it as he thrust his hips. I climaxed one last time and then Yeager exploded within me. He growled like a wolf and then threw his head back and howled at the moon. I giggled as I lifted my head from the desert floor and looked back to enjoy the show. Yeager’s back had a line of silvery fur and his fangs were bared as he filled me with his seed. That felt so good. As he finished, I felt him swell within me.

“Good boy,” I said teasingly. Yeager shook his head to clear it then looked down at me with one eyebrow raised and rolled his eyes. I laughed at my little joke. Yeager was completely a man now, save his knot that held him within me, and I no longer sported a tail or fangs either. Yeager got to his knees, his wolfen manhood locked within me. It hurt a bit but I loved the feeling. It was a special part of the act that a woman could only experience with a shifter like Yeager. Yeager and I lay down together, his knot still binding us together.

“It’s getting cold at night,” he observed. Even in the desert of southern California near the Salton Sea, the October nights were cold even though the days were still warm.

“It won’t ever get cold enough to give this up,” I replied.

“You don’t want to stay home, sip hot toddies, make love like regular people, nice and slow,” Yeager asked, his words dripping with sarcasm.

“Heck, no. I like this too much. Besides, we're not regular people. We’re shifters. I’m the only female shifter. We’re special. We’re awesome,” I told him lightheartedly. Yeager chuckled.

“That’s what Edie keeps saying. ‘That’s so freaking awesome’,” Yeager said mocking my best friend Edie. She still remarked constantly how amazing she found my ability to shift. I guess it was pretty cool. I didn’t take it for granted but it was becoming a normal part of my life, a part I enjoyed immensely.

“Maybe I’ll change my mind when winter comes but for now, I much prefer doing it like this,” I assured Yeager. He winked at me.

“Me too, especially that sexy tail,” he remarked. I giggled and snuggled closer, the cold sinking in.

“Ok, it’s cold now. Sex yes, lying around freezing, no,” I replied passing judgment on the conditions.

“Yeah, it is kind of cold, isn’t it?” Yeager observed.

“It’s almost dawn anyway. We should get back. You make the coffee, I’ll grab the blankets,” I suggested. That was part of our ritual. In the summer, the early morning hours were warm and we drank beer but now, coffee hit the spot. We couldn’t lounge outside the old motorhome we lived in naked now but we still sat outside after our runs and watched the sun come up under blankets.

“I’ve got a better idea,” Yeager replied.

“What?” I asked. Yeager pulled from me, the knot gone now, scrambled to his feet and began to run.

“Last one back makes the coffee and gets the blankets,” he said and shifted as he ran. Fucker! I got to my feet, shifting into the black wolf with the stark white patch of fur on her back and gave chase. There was no way I was making coffee!

  ~~O~~

As usual, we slept through the daylight hours. We weren’t vampires; we just acted a lot like them. Yeager and I could shift at will, day or night, full moon or no moon. But we preferred to run as wolves at night. It was more romantic under the moon and wolves were creatures of the night, at least we were, but most importantly, we were less likely to be discovered running in the desert under cover of darkness. We didn’t live near The Slabs in the middle of nowhere for nothing.

We both worked in the evenings, me a swing shift at a diner up the road a bit and Yeager as a handyman, doing odd jobs for the residents of the desert. At night, we usually ran. Some nights it was just to stretch our legs, others we ran all night barely beating the sun back to the motorhome. It was three days after out tryst in the desert when we found ourselves at home as the sun came up, sharing a wooden swing Yeager had built for us and drinking coffee when everything changed.

“More?” I asked as I filled my mug again from our thermos. Yeager shook his head. The sky to the east was a mix of blue, purple and orange as dawn approached. Edie came running down the gravel road as she did many mornings to greet us. My best friend had moved with us from the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains to the California desert. When I closed up my mom’s diner, Edie had no job and nothing to hold her in the small Sierra town of Gold Canyon so she followed Yeager and me south.

“Morning!” Edie announced as she approached.

“Good morning,” I replied. Yeager simply raised his coffee mug to acknowledge my boyish friend. Edie was always a string bean thin and a tomboy. I suspected it might go deeper than her appearance but I never pried. Maybe she liked girls but it was none of my business and I didn’t really care. I mean, I was a part-time wolf after all. Who was I to judge?

“No run last night?” Edie asked.

“Just a short one,” Yeager replied. Then we all turned as we saw the lights approach from the north. It was unusual for anyone to drive by our place, especially at six in the morning, but it wasn’t unheard of. The black Escalade approached and then slowed, finally pulling off the road just beyond the motorhome. Lost tourists, I assumed, but boy was I wrong.

Yeager sat forward, his body tensed. I sensed it too. This wasn’t simply a lost tourist. A woman stepped from the cab, a beautiful, young black girl with straight hair, blue eyes and curves of her own. She scanned the area and then spoke to the passenger. We watched this little drama play out. The girl was dressed in all black, tight pants, a mock turtleneck and a sleek jacket. The woman that came around the back of the SUV was in black also.

But this woman was older, her fifties maybe, but with an ageless beauty and a severe look on her face. Her hair was blonde and pulled back in a bun. She was thin and athletic despite her age, her deep brown eyes surveying us as she approached. She wore a skirt that hugged her hips, a black satin blouse, leather knee boots with spiked heels and a long wool coat. She looked at Edie and frowned. Then she turned her attention to me.

“You. You’re the girl,” she said plainly. I looked around as if there might be someone else she was speaking too, then at Yeager but he was as confused as I was.

  “Excuse me?” I asked.

“The shifter, the black wolf with the white patch. I see you’ve taken on the look in your human form as well or was that always there?” she replied. I touched the white shock of hair self-consciously.

“Who are you?” Yeager asked echoing the same question in my own mind. He wasn’t exactly bristling but he was on alert.

“I’m known as Lady Violet. This is Agnes, my assistant. I know what you’re thinking. How does this woman you’ve never met know that you’re shifters?” the woman answered.

“Yeah, how do you know that?” I asked warily. Yeager looked ready to shift to protect me and Edie had moved to put Yeager and me between herself and the strangers. The woman smiled, a disarming smile that I knew was carefully practiced, and then revealed her fangs to us.

“I too am a shifter as is Agnes here. We’re friends, I assure you. We mean you no harm,” Lady Violet answered. Suddenly, I had a thousand questions but only one demanded an immediate answer.

“Lady Violet, who told you about us?” I pressed. I had an idea but I wanted to hear it from her.

“Just Violet, please child. Lady is just a title and sounds so pretentious, not to mention it makes me sound rather old as well. You know who told me. Dolan’s pack informed me after you killed him,” Violet said confirming my fears.

“No, I killed him,” Yeager announced as he stood up defensively. The blanket fell away exposing my breasts but Yeager stood fully nude, ready to attack.

“Well, aren’t you the lucky girl,” Violet said as she took in Yeager’s form. “Please, I want to apologize for Dolan’s actions. Frankly, he was always trouble, just like his father was. I should have banished him long ago,” Violet explained. She could tell neither Yeager nor I were put at ease by her words.

  “I can tel
l I’ve alarmed you. That wasn’t my intent. I’ve come to see if it was true. I’ve come to see if Cassie is indeed a shifter. That would be...unprecedented to say the least,” Violet said carefully. I decided to indulge this woman. I leaned forward and by the time my hands hit the ground, I was the black wolf with the white patch of fur. I bared my teeth and growled, the fur on my back bristling making me look even bigger than my fluffy fur already made me appear. “Impressive, child,” was all Violet said as she put her hand to her mouth. She was genuinely surprised and impressed.

“God, that is so awesome,” Edie whispered behind me. I turned to regard her but I didn’t miss the black girl, Agnes, staring at her as well.

“That one can’t shift, can she?” Violet asked.

“No, she’s my friend,” I said as I stood, again in my human form. Edie stared at Agnes and the look they shared was almost palpable.

“You are an anomaly, Cassie,” Violet told me.

“So are you, if the stories are to be believed,” Yeager replied. He had told me that as far as he knew there hadn’t been a female shifter in over a hundred years until I showed up.

“Am I?” was the woman’s reply.

“It is said there are no female shifters,” Yeager explained but I was sure Violet already knew of what he spoke.

“That’s not quite true. There are some but Cassie is...different,” she said. Different? That made me curious. Curious enough to let my guard down a bit.

“Can we have a moment, maybe put on some clothes,” I asked Violet.

“Of course, child,” she said gracefully. Violet was a refined woman, of wealth I was sure. She held back her true feelings and emotions, showing us only what she wanted us to see.

“Let’s get dressed, Yeager,” I told my mate. I really wanted to speak to him alone, get a feel for what he was thinking. “Edie, do you mind keeping our guests company?” I asked as much as told Edie.

“Uh...sure, why not,” she replied. I grabbed the blanket and then Yeager and I went into the old motorhome, closing the door behind us.
