“I’ve been trying to reach you for hours,” he said, when I answered.
“I’ll move to a new place, if you want,” Ty said. He was still listening to his cell phone, but talking to me.
“So what’s up?” I asked Shuman, as I got a steak knife from the kitchen.
“We can live wherever you want,” Ty said.
“I tried to tell you last night but we got interrupted,” Shuman said.
I sliced open the tape on the package.
“We’ll buy new furniture,” Ty said.
“Kirk Keegan,” Shuman said.
I pulled back the flaps on the box. Inside was white packing paper.
“What about him?” I asked.
“His SUV was recovered,” Shuman said. “He wasn’t in it.”
“So he’s fish food?” I asked.
“The driver’s window was down and the seatbelt was unfastened,” Shuman said.
My fingers brushed the white packing paper in the box.
“We can keep the place I’ve got, if you’d like,” Ty said, “and still get new furniture.”
“So what are you telling me?” I asked Shuman.
“I’m telling you that Kirk Keegan might still be alive.”
Slowly, I lifted the packing paper out of the box. Inside was a Sinful handbag. A note lay on top of it. I opened it and read, “Please give me another chance. Luke.”
Oh, crap.
