Safe Haven Page 21

by Renee Simons

A spot opened up near a window where she could watch the weather improve, if it did. She sat on the floor and waited. Passengers from canceled flights were rerouted to other planes and airlines. Then, mercifully, the fog lifted and planes began to depart. She rose and went over to the desk to await a boarding call for her flight. She still hadn't spotted Ethan. An attendant announced boarding for Los Angeles, a notice that, like its predecessors, went out over the public address system.

Finally, she spotted him, strolling casually into the waiting area as if, seasoned traveler that he was, he knew there was no hurry. He tacked himself onto the end of the line of people waiting to board, shifted his flight bag to his left shoulder and took out his ticket and boarding pass. Jordan saw him look around and her heart thumped in her chest. Was he looking for her? Or just looking.

She joined the line directly behind him, took a deep breath, and then, with her heart in her mouth, tapped him on the shoulder. She watched his face as he turned and waited silently for her to speak.

"Could you use some company?" She reveled in the look of joy and acceptance and even, strangely or not so strangely, triumph, that touched his features.

"I could if the company were you," he answered.

Jordan took a deep breath. "Do you remember what I told you about not being able to have children?"

He took her hands in his. "Of course."

"How do you feel about that?"

"You’re all the family I need."

"Well then," she said, "some beaut bloke sent me a passport, a visa and a ticket."

"Nothing's wanting now, love," he whispered, then reached around her waist and with one strong arm, pulled her close for a long, leisurely kiss of welcome.

The line of people began moving toward the boarding ramp. Ethan looked at Jordan, and with eyes warm and lit with love said, "C'mon then, let's go home."

  About The Author

Renee Simons has been many different things in her life: A wife, a working mother, an amateur auto mechanic, vet to a mixed-breed shepherd and a rescue mutt of questionable parentage and an unpaid, unlicensed home decorator, as well as an often unsuccessful cook. (Ask her marketing director son and medical examiner daughter about her spaghetti pie - Ugh). She enjoys painting, photography, swimming, music and travel. She began her first romance novel (Still Unfinished) While In college and has been reading and writing ever since. Recalling her earliest ambitions to be a painter, she now spends her time painting pictures with words. "'Tis the best of both worlds," She says. "Life Is Good."
