Mac blinked. “Uh, I love you too Brandon and I can’t wait to marry you,” she said slowly trying to listen for some other activity inside the house.
Brandon continued to smile down at her with love in those sexy green eyes and she became concerned.
“Are there some dead bodies in there?”
Epilogue
A week before his wedding, Brandon was at his home, surrounded by Mac, his father, Victoria, the Negus and their families and parents, Mac’s parents, Terrance and Tremaine, Derek, Ethan, the Pattersons and other supporters from his office. They all gathered around awaiting the results that were basically a given, but it wasn’t over until every vote was counted.
The election process was a freedom that blacks fought for in this county, but not only the freedom to cast a vote, but to be shown respect by receiving qualified candidates that were true to the process and the betterment of our people.
Brandon wanted the citizens to select him as the candidate that they trusted and believed would serve in their best interest. In his “The Ballot or The Bullet” speech, Malcolm X advised African Americans to judiciously exercise their right to vote, but he cautioned that if the government continued to prevent African Americans from attaining full equality, it might be necessary for them to take up arms.
In order to represent the people, Brandon walked with the community, talked with them and served alongside them for a common goal. His entire life, he’d been groomed to be a leader and now he was gearing up to step into new roles…one as Mayor and one as a husband, and Brandon was prepared to take them both very seriously.
He stepped into his office for a moment of quiet reflection. Having Mackenzie by his side made today even more special than he’d initially imagined it would be. The past few months had kept them both busy, but they’d acclimated their individual jobs into their combined lives.
For Brandon’s part, the two initial shooters had taken a plea instead of risking a longer sentence. Terrance had gotten five years’ probation for his role, in exchange for his testimony against the police, the store owner and Patrice.
The Police Union had managed to delay the trials of the officers, but Brandon’s office was prepared whenever the stalling tactics ran out. Patrice was their star witness in those cases in exchange for dropping one of the many charges against her. Brandon thought the trade-off was fair for what they would receive in exchange.
Patrice had gone through three attorneys in an attempt to postpone her day in court. She’d made up every excuse and used every maneuver possible, which Brandon expected to continue until she’d exhausted all possibilities. Her background in law was serving her well, but her clock was ticking.
Attorney Hamilton, pled guilty to lesser charges and agreed to testify against Patrice. The store owner’s license was revoked and at trial, he was found guilty on all charges, keeping Brandon’s winning record intact.
In addition, the initiative that Mac and Brandon had put to the City Council had been approved and was now being piloted at Khalil’s community center. All in all, it had been a hectic few months, to say the least.
Brandon found that he was thankful for Mackenzie’s mother and all of the planning activities that she’d taken on since they didn’t have the time. She’d been a godsend and now, next week he was marrying the woman he loved in an elaborately elegant affair in front of hundreds of people that he didn’t know.
Brandon smiled to himself at that thought. It seemed like Dr. Green had invited every person she’d ever met in her life, to this wedding. He couldn’t complain because the Green’s had insisted on footing the bill and Mackenzie was happy so nothing else really mattered.
“Is that happy we see on your face?” Lance asked as the Negus piled into his office.
Brandon smiled. “Yes, I think it is.”
“Save some of that for next week,” Rion told him with a smile.
“I’ll have plenty,” Brandon responded. “That beautiful woman is the reason for my happiness.”
“Congratulations, brother. We’re happy for you,” Khalil told him.
Corvus agreed. “Yeah, but don’t forget you owe me one.”
“I know Corvus, although I only needed you one time,” Brandon reminded him.
He shrugged. “Hey, I did it.”
“Okay Corvus,” Brandon shook his head.
Derek entered the room with a huge smile. “Mayor Williams!”
“Have they declared it?” Brandon asked.
“Not yet, but seventy percent of the votes are in and it’s going to be a landslide victory.”
Brandon smiled. “Wow.”
Mac appeared in the door. “I wondered where all you guys had disappeared to.” She smiled at them. “Can I see the Mayor for a moment?”
Corvus smirked. “He’s yours, nobody else wants him.”
“Get out,” Brandon told him.
The men left with smiles and Mac closed the door behind them before turning to Brandon. “I was looking for you.”
He watched as she approached his desk. “I just stepped away to think.”
When Mac reached him, he pulled her down on his lap. “Why were you looking for me?”
“For this…” Mac lowered her mouth to his, kissing him slowly. “Congratulations Mr. Mayor.”
“Thank you Chief Green.”
Mac sighed. “You know, for a while I was thinking that I didn’t want to be the chief anymore.”
Brandon frowned. “Why?”
“I just didn’t know if I wanted to keep doing it. There are many frustrating days and that internal corruption sent me into a deep spiral,” she confessed.
“And now?”
She smiled. “Now, I know I have this incredible man waiting for me when I come home and that makes it bearable on those unbearable days.”
“You’re great at what you do and as long as you want to do it, I’ve got your back,” Brandon told her sincerely.
Mac felt her eyes water. “Well, I thought I’d be Chief Green for a long time but this green eyed man had other plans for me.”
“Yes, I’m going to marry you next week and make you Chief Williams,” he said proudly.
Mac stroked his smooth jaw and stared into his eyes. “So, we’re going to need more eggs.”
Brandon looked confused. “More eggs?”
She kissed him again. “Yeah, because we have to feed the baby too. We’ll have to figure out what he or she likes in them though.” Mac went to kiss him again and he stopped her.
“Mackenzie…” He paused trying to find the words while searching her face with surprised eyes.
She smiled. “Yes, we’re having a little green-eyed Tin Man or Tin Woman.”
Stunned, he stammered out, “I…I…I don’t know what to say.”
“Well, you could say, “Wow baby, I’m so happy!” or something along those lines,” she prompted.
He shook his head as he touched her face and ran his finger across her lips slowly tracing their fullness. “You don’t understand. There are no words for how I feel right now, because I’ve never experienced them before.”
“How do you describe that you want to jump and shout, yet sit and cry at the same time?” he asked softly. “How can I tell you that you’ve changed my entire life with your presence?”
Mac felt the wetness on her cheeks. “I think that’s pretty good.”
“Wow baby, I’m so happy…” he whispered before taking her into his arms and kissing her, telling her without words what she meant to him.
“I love you Mackenzie.” He wiped her face gently.
Mac closed her eyes for a minute then opened them slowly and looked at the man who’d been her rock for so long. “I love you Brandon and I’m so proud of you.”
He smiled. “My very own Baby Doll, so beautiful, so strong and so sweet.”
“We’ll have to do some safer activities in the bedroom for a little while,” she told him.
“I was already thinking of some,”
Mac laughed softly. “I’m sure you were.”
She laid her head on his shoulder. “I think your father will be happy.”
“Happy? This was his plan from the beginning.”
“My parents will be ecstatic, but we can’t tell them until after the wedding,” she warned.
Brandon looked confused. “Your father caught us about to make love in his hot tub.”
Mac flushed. “I know, don’t remind me, but my mother is old-fashioned about this kind of stuff. So can we wait to tell everyone until we come back from the honeymoon. I didn’t want to keep it from you until then.”
He lifted her face to his. “Baby, whenever you want to announce it, it’s fine with me. Thank you for telling me.” He touched his lips to hers. “I’ll never forget this day.”
“I won the election, I found out I’m going to be a father and I made love to a beautiful, sexy woman in my office, on my desk, with a house full of people in the other room.”
Mac frowned trying to decipher his words as he stood and moved away from her. She watched him lock the door then turn to her with a sexy look.
“Brandon?” He came to stand before her then pulled her close and lowered his face to hers.
“When I know what I want to do, I do it…”
