The White Cowboy - Complete BWWM Romance Box Set

How would she ever get past this hurt? This was worse than her last boyfriend not believing in her.
She pulled into Brandon’s driveway, then parked the car in front of his house. She tucked the crutches underneath her, and looked up at the sky for a moment. The sky and the whole world seemed bigger out here.
Gemma closed the door behind her, then entered Brandon’s house. He stood there in the hall with the blue ribbon in his hand, and she knew. At that moment she wanted to get in her car and drive to California.
***
Brandon couldn’t sit still. He kept staring at the blue ribbon and pacing in his living room.
He wanted Gemma to be here now. And then she was coming through the front door. Her doe eyes looking at him as if she expected him to be mad.
“Hi.”
“Hi,” she said. “I guess you found out.”
He looked down at the blue ribbon. “I’m not mad.”
“No?”
He smiled at the ribbon. His heart was full to bursting at the moment. Could he tell her? Could he be vulnerable? “No. I know why you did it.”
“You do?”
He could see her visibly relax.
“Yes, I do, and I can’t fault you. I’ve decided to get my ass in gear and get the cookbook published. I have no idea what I’m doing, but I’ll figure it out,” he said.
He liked that she smiled. He would miss that smile.
“Good.”
She didn’t move.
He didn’t move. He’d never been so nervous. As if this was their first time. This was the first time since he figured out that he loved her.
But he wouldn’t tell her that. He wouldn’t hold her back. He couldn’t hold her back.
“I looked at the weather report. There’s a storm due tomorrow late morning,” he said.
Why was he talking about the weather?
“Oh?”
“So you’ll want to get on the road as early as possible to get to some place with a hotel before it hits.”
“Right. Good idea.”
He still didn’t move. Nor did she.
He stared at her across the room. He had to make the first move. “Gemma.”
“Brandon.”
He dropped the blue ribbon on the nearest table, then strode to her. He took her in his arms. She dropped her crutches and put her arms around him.
“Oh, Gemma.”
He took possession of her lips. He knew he couldn’t stop this speeding train, so he might as well get on and have a good ride while it lasted.
“Brandon,” she murmured when he stopped kissing her.
He scooped her up in his arms and strode to the bedroom. She gasped when he entered it. He’d set candles up around the bed. The dog had been banished to the kitchen.
“Oh, Brandon.”
He set her on the bed as if she were fine china. Then he looked at her, really memorized what she looked like. He long black hair, her big doe eyes. That smile that just lit up her face. The way she told him exactly what she wanted in bed. He would miss it all. He would never forget this stranger who was his lover.
“Come here, cowboy,” she said.
He smiled. “I’m feeling a little constricted. Let me get my clothes off.”
He unbuttoned his shirt, one button at a time, as she licked her lips. She didn’t take her gaze off of him.
*
Gemma had never wanted someone inside her so badly in all her life. And he had the nerve to take his time unbuttoning his shirt. She sat up, reached for his pants and undid them.
“I don’t want slow. I want quick and dirty. Hot monkey sex,” she said. “I want us naked and sweaty.”
He chuckled. “Okay.”
He ripped open his shirt and dropped his pants. She put her hand on his very erect penis and tugged him onto the bed.
He tumbled, but didn’t land on her. He landed beside her. “Your turn.”
“If I could stand, I’d return the favor, but I just want to be naked, at this point.”
“My pleasure.”
He helped her undress until they both were panting and naked.
She nudged his shoulder so he’d be flat on his back. “My turn.”
She straddled his legs and kissed up his thigh, just avoiding his penis. Then she kissed down his other thigh. She then licked his balls ever so lightly, her breath fanning across them. He twitched. She wanted to torture him, though she was just as turned on.
“Gemma,” he said with a raspy voice.
“Not yet.”
She had trouble maneuvering with her foot, but she was determined to turn him on. Forget about fast. She wanted him begging for her. Then she licked a circle around the tip of his penis.
His fists clenched.
“If I didn’t think I would hurt you, I’d flipped you over now.”
“Nope.”
Then she took all of him in her mouth. In. Out. Until she was almost as excited as he was. Then she released him. Sliding her body up his, she kissed his lips and sat up.
Hovering over his erection, she smiled at him. His hands found her breast, cupping each one. Flick to one nipple, then the other. A humming began in her middle.
“Ready?” she asked.
“Of course.”
Then she slid onto him, taking him slowly into her. She paused, then slid off him, almost to the end. Then she rode him. She bounced on him as if this was her last day alive.
It might be. Without him, she might not feel so alive. He put his hands on her hips to guide her up and down. Then she felt it. And before she could react, she fell over the edge. His hips thrust into her, taking over because she wasn’t sure she could move while she was in the throes of the orgasm.
And then she was done. And so was he. She collapsed onto his heaving chest.
“Holy crap,” she murmured.
“Yeah.”
“We need to do that again.”
She heard his chuckle rumble up from his chest.
***
“I’ll call the hospital first thing in the morning so you know how Jessica is,” Brandon whispered.
They lay with legs intertwined. Well, her good leg intertwined with his two legs. Her hand played with his chest hair. He didn’t want the night to end.
He probably couldn’t have made love to her again even if a gun had been to his head. She was mush in his arms, so he thought he’d done a good job the second and third times. The first time had been all her.
She’d nearly killed him. In a good way.
He’d remember this night and three days for the rest of his life. Even if he never loved anyone again, he wasn’t the same after loving Gemma. She’d opened his heart and made love seem possible.
Maybe he should be looking for someone to spend his life with.
If given a choice, he’d have chosen Gemma, but not at the expense of what she wanted to do. That wouldn’t be fair.
Should he tell her how he felt?
That would be too much of a burden. He would love her by letting her go. That settled, he snuggled deeper into the pillows.
***
Gemma knew the moment Brandon went to sleep. His arm twitched a few times, then his breathing became regular.
He didn’t snore, but she probably would have found that attractive too.
There wasn’t anything not sexy about this Iowa cowboy. How was she going to leave in the morning? How was she going to leave her heart behind?
She had to. She’d come this far, and the agent was waiting for her.
She also knew that if Brandon asked, she’d stay. She’d never think about Hollywood again. She’d have his babies and raise his animals or do whatever he wanted of her.
She loved him. She hadn’t wanted that to happen, but it did.
He shifted in his sleep, his arm tightening around her. She’d never felt safer. She wouldn’t have thought she wanted to feel safe.
She had wanted to feel loved. Now she did, and she was going to leave it all behi
nd. She frowned as she fell into a restless sleep.
***
Brandon hadn’t said anything to Gemma last night. If he said how he felt now, it could be construed as a way to get her to stay. So he hid in his barn where his animals wouldn’t ask him to talk about his feelings. He was being a coward, he knew, but the less time he spent saying good-bye the better.
Gemma hadn’t expressed her love last night either, so he felt justified in not saying.
But he should have been braver. Maybe he was hiding from himself and not Gemma.
She appeared in the doorway. “My car’s packed.”
He faced her with a smile that he didn’t feel. He wanted her to stay, but he refused to hold her back. “Helen called while you were in the shower. They think that Jessica is going to be fine, but she has to take it easy.”
“Will she come back to here?”
“Probably. She’ll still get to do the duet with Tim McGraw, but she postponed it until she was sure she could work again.”
“And the baby?”
“She’ll raise it by herself. Well, as much as someone like her will ever be by herself,” he said.
Why were they talking about Jessica? He was hiding behind the subject.
“Gemma.”
“Brandon.”
He stood inches from her, wanting to touch her. He wanted to hold her and not let her go. She put a hand on his face.
“I’m going to miss you.”
“I’m going to miss you, but I can’t wait to see how successful you’ll be.”
“And I can’t wait to see this cookbook on Amazon,” she said. That made him grin. She grinned back. “I better get going. Before this storm.”
“Can you make it to Omaha in two hours?”
“ I think so. I’ll hunker down there for the day and night.”
“Good plan.”
“Besides, who knows if there’s a cowboy there to let me stay at his place?”
He smiled, trying to hide the pain. He didn’t want to stop touching her. “There might be. Folks are pretty nice in Nebraska.”
“Well, I don’t want to leave things to chance.”
“No, you wouldn’t.”
Silence hung between them like a spider web. “Walk me to my car?”
“Sure.”
He did. Before she slid into the driver’s seat, she rested her crutches against the side of the car and wrapped her arms around his neck. “I’ll never forget you, cowboy.”
He kissed her one last time, his hand in her hair, holding on like she was a lifeline. “I’ll never forget you, either.”
She smiled, got in the car, her crutches on the passenger’s side, and drove away. Brandon’s heart went with her.
***
Gemma drove an hour before she realized she should have told him she loved him. She should have said it and not been a coward.
She could call, but that was not the same thing. The radio was saying that the storm was moving faster. If she turned around, she’d get to him before the storm, but she’d be stuck another day there.
How bad could that be?
“Oh Brandon.”
***
Brandon didn’t last an hour before he wanted to jump out of his skin. He knew he could make it to Omaha even if the storm hit. But how would he find her?
“You could call her,” Clint said. He’d come over to help.
“I need to tell her in person. How will I find her in Omaha?”
“Call her when you get there.”
“You’ll take care of things here?”
“Yes. Go.”
Spike hopped into the truck with him. “You ready for an adventure, too?”
Spike barked.
***
Gemma had turned around. She was on her way east when the car sputtered. Thankfully, there was a rest stop. The car stalled in a parking spot. She looked out the windshield as flakes began to fall. She remembered the snowstorm of a few days ago. How much had changed since then.
She couldn’t stay at the rest stop, but it didn’t seem like the Mustang was going anywhere. She only knew three people in Iowa, and she only had of their phone numbers.
So she dialed it.
“Gemma? Is everything okay?”
He was in his truck. She could hear the diesel rumble in the background.
“Well, my car died again.”
“Oh, no, where are you?”
She told him the name of the rest stop.
“I’ll be there.”
And he was, about fifteen minutes later.
He parked next to her car and slid out of the truck, a smile on his face. “Hi.”
“Hi. How did you get here so fast?”
He put his hand in his pockets and shuffled his feet. “I was coming after you. I forgot something.”
“Oh?”
“Wait. Why are you on the Eastbound side?”
She leaned against her car, her bad foot resting on her good foot. “I forgot something as well.”
“Oh?”
“I forgot to tell you that I love you.”
His grin split his face. “I forgot to tell you that I love you.”
She smiled as well. “So what happens now?”
“Let’s get your car towed to a dealer so they can fix it.”
“I’m not talking about the car.”
“I know, I just was avoiding the elephant in the parking lot,” he said.
“Well, I’m not. I want you in my life, Brandon.”
“I want you in mine, but I’m not going to ask you to not pursue your dream.”
Of course he wouldn’t. “What if I want to stay?”
His face lit up. “You’d stay?”
“If you ask me to.”
He shook his head. “I can’t ask you to give up your dream.”
“You aren’t. My dream changed sometime in the last three days. I want to be with you. Play my guitar at the Helen’s bar, and milk the goats, and who knows what else you need me to do.”
He stepped closer. “I know a few things. But they require you to be naked.”
“I can be naked. I’ll be naked milking the goats if you’ll just ask me to stay.”
He looked at the sky as if mulling that over. “Hmm, naked goat-milking. Just not while Clint is around.”
“Brandon, ask me.”
He leaned down so his lips were inches from hers. “Gemma Watson.”
“Yeah?”
“Stay.”
