Tame Me

“Oh, yeah. Almost instantly. I mean, she hung up on me and then totally cussed me out the next day when she called back but...” Charlotte jerks a shoulder, knocking off one of the straps of her dress. “That’s Liz for you, a little high-strung. It’s water under the bridge now.”
Lifting the strap, I put it back in its place. I’m about to press a kiss there, right on her shoulder, when a big, booming voice interrupts from behind us.
“You have some explaining to do, young lady!”
Charlotte’s eyes widen. “I hope you’re ready to meet Marlon and Tiffani.”
A hand claps around my shoulder. “Congratulations and good to meet you, son. We would have made our way up here sooner, but...well, to be honest, we weren’t sure if this one was going to stick around.”
“Oh ye of little faith,” I reply, borrowing one of Charlotte’s phrases. My father-in-law throws back his head and laughs.
“I like you already, boy. You’ll fit right in. Sassy, just like the rest of them. You can call me Marlon. And this is my wife, Tiffani.” I shake Mr. Kensington’s hand before brushing a kiss along Mrs. Kensignton’s knuckles.
“Oh, my,” Mrs. Kensington giggles. “Such a gentleman.”
Mr. Kensington’s expression turns serious. “So. We cut you off. You moved to Maine, got a job and a promotion. And then married your boss.”
Charlotte nods. “That about sums it up.”
“And are you planning on staying?”
Charlotte crosses her arms and pretends to think on it. “Well, let’s see. We’re married and having a baby so-”
The rest of her sentence is drowned out by Mrs. Kensington’s scream. And now I know where Charlotte gets her excited-scream-that-actually-sounds-like-a-bloody-murder-scream from.
“Congratulations! Never thought I’d see the day!” The words are choked out in between loud sobs and poor Charlotte looks horribly uncomfortable while her mother squeezes her to death.
“Lay off, Tiff. You’ll squeeze the baby.” Shoving his wife aside, Mr. Kensington pulls Charlotte into a much gentler hug. “Now, I was going to give you this today as a present regardless, but I just can’t wait another second after that announcement.” Stepping back, he holds out an envelope. “Know this: I’m proud of you.”
Charlotte opens the envelope and Jesus Christ, my eardrums. “We’re rich, Brody! We’re rich!”
Taking the letter, I smile when I finish reading it. Charlotte has access to her trust fund again. “You mean you’re rich,” I correct. Because it’s her money and I don’t give a shit what she does with it.
“No, we’re rich.” She wiggles her ring finger at me. “Don’t tell me you forgot you’re vows already. For richer or poorer. Well, now we’re richer! And I have so many ideas for the resort.”
“Wait, what? You want to use it on the resort?”
Charlotte cocks a brow. “Duh. We have to compete against Ellie and Drew’s casino! And they had a huge head start. Anyway, so my ideas...”
Outwardly, I groan. But inwardly, I’m grinning. Even though I’m sure half of them are going to be too absurd to even entertain, I’m just as sure the other half are going to be brilliant. And I can’t wait to hear every last one of them.
Nope, it’s never a dull day in the Connors household.

About the Author
Natalie can't sing. Or dance. Or play an instrument. She can't ride a bike and doesn't know how to swim or drive. As a result, her husband often asks if she’s from Mars (the answer, in case you were wondering, is no. Unless New York counts as another planet). When she's not geeking out at her day job, Natalie can be found attempting to wrangle her overly energetic Westie, baking ridiculously chewy chocolate chip cookies, and watching so-bad-it's-good reality television shows.
