Orphan: Book One: Chronicles of the Fall

by Lee Ramsay

Another person who deserves serious recognition is my cover artist, Clark Ocleasa. With a couple of pages of character design notes and a rough draft chapter, he managed to capture the vision I had in my head of Tristan fighting a Dushken huntsman. His art will again be on the cover of Bloodline, the sequel to Orphan, which he also nailed.

My good friend Dinh Tran was also instrumental in putting together the final product, as I had no clue how to do titles and other design work to complete the cover. He has provided me with some excellent insights on social media, which my introverted self appreciates.

I also want to take a moment to recognize some people with whom I have had zero contact, but who have had some significant impact on how I wrote the story. When you stare at a computer screen as long as it takes to write, rewrite, and edit something like Orphan and other books in the series, it helps to have background music that captures the feel of a scene or setting. Some of their material has unofficially become the theme music for certain characters. Major appreciation for inspiration goes to singer/songwriters/musicians such as Karliene Reynolds, Ivan Torrent, C21 FX, Faun, and too many others to name. If you want an idea of the music in the setting, these are great places to start – as well as a lot of groups making Norse or Scottish folk-influenced music.

One of these days, I’ll feel comfortable enough naming the actors and actresses who, across multiple roles or through their social media, had a significant influence on how I envisioned my characters. Let’s just say there are some stellar performances and some sauciness that influenced the book.
