  Chapter One

  “Happy Anniversary” Samuel Cruz three daughters yelled as soon as he opened the front door. Streamers and confetti was thrown in his direction. The wind blew the colorful pieces of paper and glitter, scattering it across the front of the house. He pulled the key from the door and walked into the foyer. Everywhere he looked, there were signs that said Happy 25th Anniversary Dad and Mom. The room was filled with silver helium balloons and white streamers. Sam's lips curved up in a smile as he stared at his beautiful girls. Gone was his terrible day, his wife, Zara forgot what today marked, giving his day a shitty head start. Leave it to his daughters to turn it around.

  Andrea was the eldest at twenty-four; she was a mixture of his wife and him. Her skin tone reminded him of vanilla latte; with light brown eyes, long brown curly hair, and thin lips. She was tallest of his girls, Andrea also had a smart mouth that usually got her in a lot of trouble. Then there was Samantha. His middle child resembled Zara the most. She was of darker complexion, milk chocolate with big brown eyes and straight black hair. Last was his baby girl Zoe. She was seventeen-years old, and his mini me. Zoe resembled him down to her blue/brown irises, but she inherited her mother's brown skin and kinky hair which was golden brown. His daughters were the most beautiful girls to him, the result of the love between him and the only woman he’d ever wanted. Zara was/is his everything even after all the years they’d shared together, his body only yearned for hers.

  Twenty-five years of wedded bliss, it seemed like yesterday they were living in a one-bedroom apartment with two little girls. Zara was a breath of fresh air. He'd never loved someone the way he loves her. She was of African-American and West Indies decent. Her skin was the color of mocha chocolate. Her thick, petite frame fit perfectly in his arms. Zara's almond shape eyes enclosed by extra-long lashes and her dark brown irises were the first thing that captivated him when they met in ninth grade, the way they crinkle on the sides every time her luscious lips formed a smile. What would his life be like without his Z?

  “Dad,” Andrea glanced over his shoulder. “Where's mom?”

  Sam sat a bouquet of red-roses and a white jewelry box down on the antique side table near the entrance. He was disappointed when he didn’t see Zara among the girls. He couldn’t believe she was still at work, today of all days. “I thought she would be home by now.”

  “She's not with you?” Zoe raised her eyebrows walking pass him looking out the door.

  “Really Zoe, didn't you just hear him?” Andrea pointed out. “Did she forget your anniversary?”

  They all stared at him as he closed the door behind him.

  Samantha took a couple of strides and wrapped her arms around him. “Happy anniversary daddy,” she whispered. “Mom didn't forget she has a huge surprise for you.” Sam hugged his daughter tightly and then released her. He knew for a fact his wife forgot this day.

  Earlier that morning he’d thrown her several hints about how special the day was and she overlooked them all.

  Sam handed her a special coin he had made with their names, the year they got married and the state they were married in, and she didn’t get it. She must’ve assumed it was a regular quarter. Zara just stared at the coin in her hand, and chuckled. “Is this a lucky coin?” She placed it in her pant pocket.

  “Something like that,” he pulled on a t-shirt. “My luck started twenty-five years ago.”

  Zara cocked her eyebrow, “Are you talking in code? I might be late tonight. I really need to finish a project that’s due next month.”

  That’s when Sam realized his wife had forgotten their anniversary. “Have a good day,” he stared at her.

  She walked up to him and gave him a peck on his lips. “Love you to the moon and back Sam.”

  Sam wrapped his arms around her waist pulling her forward. “I have something special planned for us tonight,” he tapped her ass.

  She chuckled pinching his butt. “I can't wait, but if I'm going to make your surprise tonight I need to leave now.” Zara kissed his cheek and backed away. “See you tonight,” she waved leaving the bedroom. Throughout the day he called her several times and never once did she say anything. Sam was hurt so he didn't mention it either.

  “Pa-pa,” Adrianna yelled as she ran toward him. His granddaughter was another surprise in is life. He was surrounded by estrogen everywhere he turned even the dog they had was a female.

  Sam picked her up, and showered her with kisses making her giggle nonstop. “How's papa's baby doing?” Adrianna was the opposite of his girls. She was of fair complexion with hazel eyes, and curly blonde hair. Her father was a deadbeat. Sam was fucking mad when Andrea sat him and Zara down and started off the conversation by telling them she’d dropped out of college and was three months pregnant and in love with a guy named Steven. Two years later she was living on her own, working at a warehouse, and Steven was nowhere to be found. He stared at his grandbaby, “Do you know how much Papa loves you?”

  Adrianna opened her arms as wide as she could. “This big.”

  Sam expanded her hands a little more “Yes,” he chuckled and then he stared at his kids. “Thank you for this wonderful surprise. Mom will love the decorations,” Sam continued to the kitchen with Adrianna in his arms and stopped dead in his track when he saw the candle lit dinner the girls arranged in the middle of the dining room with rose pedals all over the table the way Zara used to. The girls thought about everything except to remind their mother what today was.

  “Dad, where's mom?” Samantha asked. “This is for the both of you.”

  Sam continued walking into the kitchen. “Your mother said she would be late tonight,” he placed Adrianna on the counter as he grabbed a cup.

  “Our mother?” Zoe raised an eyebrow. Sam only used the word mother when he was mad at Zara. “Dad you didn't remind her?”

  He didn’t answer as he kissed his baby girl's chunky cheeks. Andrea slipped out the back door with her cellphone in her hand. Sam knew his children; Zara was about to receive a call.

  “We have a night of fun planned for you two,” Samantha sat on the stool eating a chocolate covered strawberry. “This is so delicious mom would love these.”

  “Samantha those are for mommy, not you,” Zoe knocked the fruit out of her sister’s hand.

  Sam shook his head. He missed having his daughters all under the same roof. They were almost empty nesters, one more to go. Zoe would be leaving for college next year. It was exciting and nerve wrecking at the same time. “What do you young ladies have planned?”

  “We are going out dancing. You two need to be reminded to have fun, like you used to when we were kids. You and mom were the cool parents, all of our friends wanted to be around you.”

  Sam set Adrianna on the floor and she took off to the backyard following her mother. “Sammie, its Thursday, I have to work tomorrow morning.”

  “Dad,” Samantha entwined her fingers begging him. “It's your twenty-fifth anniversary. We want to go out and celebrate.”

  Zoe leaned against the island. “Daddy, your older daughters paid a lot of money for VIP. Are you going to waste their hard earned funds?”

  His girls always suckered him into things. “Fine. I'm going to take a shower. I hope your mom is back by the time I'm finished getting dressed, if not I'm celebrating by myself.” Sam marched out the kitchen. “Zara, where the hell are you?” Now he was getting fucking pissed.

  30 years ago

  Samuel sat by himself in the high school cafeteria, hating life. His parents divorced and his mother decided to move from Puerto Rico to Wisconsin of all places. Her best friend owned a Puerto Rican restaurant there. He left his friends and family back home especially his girlfriend, Natalia. He missed her the most, but someone told him she was moving on and it had been less than a month. He froze his ass off that morning waiting for the bus. Sam wasn’t used to the freezing weather, and the kids at the school were stuck up. He glanced around the cafeteria, there weren’t too many Hispanics. His English was rough to say the least.

  No one spoke to him, all they did was stare and whisper. Being the new kid on the block wasn’t easy. One of the black girls from his science class sat at a table in front of him and kept looking his way. Samuel didn’t smile back he looked away and continued to eat the nasty food.

  ~~~
  “Pendejo,” Samuel said under his breath when a kid kicked his chair. “Do it again,” he stood when the guy did it again, and this time he ran out the cafeteria laughing.
  Zara could tell the new guy was pissed as he sat clenching his jaw. The veins in his neck throbbed as he continued to eat the tuna sandwich. He’d been sitting by himself for over three weeks. No one would talk to Samuel, sometimes she felt sorry for him, but every time she tried to be nice to him and smile he would mean mug her like if she’d done something to him. There was something about the Hispanic guy that she couldn’t explain, she was drawn to him. Samuel was tall, with long wavy brown hair touching his shoulder, today he had it pulled up in a ponytail. Anytime he stared at her through those blue/brown eyes a piece of her melted away. Zara lips drew up in a smile watching him as he ate. She was daydreaming.
  “What are you smiling about?” Her friend Corina asked looking at her confused. “Stop staring at that Puerto Rican kid, he looks like trouble you don’t need.”
  “I’m just wondering why he hasn’t made any friends,” Zara mumbled never taking her eyes off him.
  “Because he doesn’t speak English,” Corina said raising an eyebrow. “I don’t get it, we’re in the United States, he should know English.” Corina now watched him, “he’s cute, but I think he might be illegal,” she whispered.
  Zara snapped her head now glaring at her so called friend. “Puerto Rico is a United States territory, so he is a citizen, and I am offended by your statement. My mother was an illegal alien when she first arrived here twenty years ago, and she’s now a citizen.” Zara stood with her tray and walked over to sit with the new guy. “May I sit?” She slowly asked.
  Samuel lifted his head and then his lips crawled up to a side smile. “Yes.”
  “Hi,” Zara sat in front of him. He knew English. “I’m Zara.”
  “Samuel,” he stared at her through mesmerizing irises.
  “May I ask you a question?” She took a sip of her milk box. “Why do you always sit alone?”
  “I don’t have friends,” he replied in his thick Spanish accent. “My English sucks.”
  “No it doesn’t,” she took a bite of her slice of pizza. “You have an accent, and I find it cute,” she could feel herself blush as he gazed at her. Oh God he had dimples.
  Samuel chuckled, his eyes squinting as he did. “Cute.”
  “Yes.” She has always been outspoken, never holding anything back. “I’m not doing well in Spanish, maybe you can teach me.”
  He leaned back in his seat. “If you help me with English.”
  “Deal,” she blurted without even thinking about it. Zara couldn’t contain how giddy she was feeling. “You called that guy pendijo, what does that mean?”
  “It’s pendejo,” Samuel corrected. “It means fucker.”
  Zara chuckled, “We will get along great, I already like you.”
  “Me too,” after that day they became good friends.
  Chapter Two
  Zara Cruz was typing away on her keyboard. Her stomach growled, she didn’t have time to eat breakfast or lunch, coffee was her best friend today. Sam had something special planned for them tonight, but she fell behind on her work when she attended the company's annual conference last week. What was Sam up to? She smiled, thinking of the quarter he'd given her that morning. Zara dug in her pocket and glanced at it for a second. She knew her husband, and he was up to something but she couldn’t quite put her finger on it. She'd texted him, letting him know that she wouldn’t be home in a reasonable time for his surprise. Zara had become a workaholic in the last couple of years. Sam signed over his education benefits to Zara early on in his career so she could finish her degree, and she did. He’d been so proud of her when she sashayed across the stage with her Master's in Business. Sam retired early as a Master Chief in the Navy, because he wanted to enjoy his girls before they left home, and now he worked at a hardware store as a hobby. After years of only being mommy and wife, she finally landed her dream job, working as the senior director at an insurance company. She smiled thinking of all the sacrifice they both endured during the years.
  Someone cleared their throat.
  Zara looked up from her computer and her co-worker Dan was watching her. When did he enter her office? “Can I help you?” She placed the coin on her desk.
  “Why are you still here Zara?” He leaned against the wooden desk. “Those reports can wait until Monday. I'm starting to think that you like being around me,” Dan smiled exposing perfect white teeth.
  “Don’t flatter yourself,” Zara leaned back in her chair, crossing her arms over her chest, and his eyes went straight to her breast. For the first time in two years she felt uncomfortable around him. Everyone in the office called Dan, Zara's working husband, because they worked great together to accomplish projects for the company. Zara never took Dan's flirting seriously, especially after meeting his lovely wife a couple of months ago. She just took his flirting as a personality trait. “I don’t like leaving my reports undone. You should know me by now, I like having things done before they are due, unlike you. My staying has nothing to do with you.”
  “Come on Zara,” Dan's voice was deeper than usual. He stood in front of her watching her through green eyes, and then he unbuttoned his tailored suit jacket. The women in the building drool over Dan, but Zara only had eyes for her Puerto Rican Papi.
  Her husband stood six-feet three inches with shaggy brown hair, with a few scattered grey strands making him look sexier if that was even possible. His blue/brown eyes were the first thing that captivated her when they meet in ninth grade so many years ago. Every time he whispered in her ear in Spanish, she wet her panties. Sam resembled the British model David Gandy. Zara's body was reacting to her thoughts.
  “I see the way you're looking at me,” Dan fixed his collar.
  Zara was about to tell him she wasn’t thinking about his ass, she was lusting at the thought of
her husband when her cellphone rang, she looked at the screen it was Andrea. “Hello.”
  “Mom, where are you?” Andrea blurted.
  “At work,” Zara answered looking at Dan as he took off his jacket placing it over the chair in front of her desk.
  “What are you doing at work so late, especially tonight?” She rushed her words. “Mom it's almost eight o'clock!”
  She raised her eyebrow, why was she yelling at her. “Andrea you might want to lower your voice. I'm wrapping up some lose ends.”
  “Mom,” she sighed. “Did you stop and even look at the date?”
  Zara twisted to the side looking at her calendar. Her heart began racing as she chanted the date. “May 5th... May 5th” Oh my God, it's our anniversary. She rapidly stood, staring at the coin, realizing the significance. Zara picked it up, and looked closely it wasn’t a regular coin. It had an engraving that said, “Happy 25th Anniversary My Love.” Sam had the coin made to reflect when their love started. May 5, 1991 Samuel & Zara.
  “Do you remember what you did on May fifth, nineteen ninety-one?” Andrea asked sarcastically. “We have plans mom. Please find your way home soon. Daddy is very disappointed.” She wouldn’t let Zara get a word in as she continued. “I can't believe you forgot, but Samantha and I will make tonight memorable. Mommy please follow suit, and go along with what we are planning to make up for your forgetfulness.”
  Andrea must have fell and hit her head the way she's talking to her. “I'm on my way home,” Zara swiped her finger against the screen, dropping her phone in her purse. Zara saved all the documents she was working on, and before powering down her computer. “I can't believe I forgot,” tears rolled down her cheeks. They'd survived so much from the beginning to now. How can she forget the day she said I do to her forever? Damn, damn, damn. She wiped her tears with the back of her hand.
