“I can help them,” I promised her.

“Good. Some of their personalities will be opposite to the new element they receive. You may not understand that now, but you will later. It won’t be an easy job, but I know you can handle it,” Life said with such confidence. Then, like Nathaniel was prone to do, she just disappeared. I wondered if Carmon would ever be able to do that, or even me! I tried concentrating and drawing my power out of my core, as Carmon called it. I opened my eyes after about a minute. I was still in the kitchen.

Shrugging, I went to the fridge to find something to eat and drink. Carmon found me there, asleep, head on the island a little before dawn. He was kind enough to carry me back upstairs where I fell back to sleep.

In the car the next morning, I told Cal about my interaction with his aunt. He was surprised she had come to me, to say the least. I think it upset him a little too. I knew, whether he’d admit it out loud or not, that he wished his family were normal. If he knew who his father was, maybe he could have a relationship with that side of his family, but I knew from prior conversations he knew nothing of his father.

We arrived home a couple of days later. I loved having our own place. Decorating would be at the top of my to-do list, right after training with my mate. I unpacked us, which took a whole five minutes, and started some laundry. It was so nice to take care of my own house. As I finished folding our laundry, Carmon came into the room. I could tell he didn’t like what he had to say.

“I gotta head out. The guys hit a vampire hive on their way back from a mission, and the vampires are holding young women against their will. They asked me if I would help. It’s a very large hive.”

“Go help them, Cal. I’ll be here when you return.” I would miss him, but I was happy to stay home and relax in my tub with the jets. He needed to go help his brothers free those girls. I couldn’t imagine being in their shoes.

“I love you and I’ll be home soon,” Cal said, leaning in to kiss me.

I would never tire of kisses.

“Keep your promise to come home, Carmon, and I love you too.”

  Drew

I watched my brother from across our campfire, so happy and in love with his mate. I would never admit that I was jealous. At first, I felt bad for Carmon. He’d willingly bonded with the irritating girl so we could get the job done. Then, after she went missing, it was like I was seeing a different brother. He was crazy worried about her. I’d never felt helpless before that moment. There was nothing I could do to help him. Mostly because I had no idea what he was going through. She and her family were annoying, to say the least.

When they started dating in Cambria, and the physical affection started, I could see how happy they were together. Carmon always had someone to be around so he was never alone, always had someone to share his feelings with. I’m too much like Uncle Marcus. I don’t do feelings. Not out loud anyway. I would have to really trust a woman to share my feelings so openly with her. The idea scared me, but at the same time, I craved it. I needed it.

“You in there?” Chris knocked on my head. I loved the guy, but he drove me crazier than the Hamilton’s had.

  “Leave me alone,” I grumbled.

“Touchy, aren’t we?” Chris teased. I let out a gust of air from my lungs and stood to walk away. “Come on, man. I was only joking.”

“I know,” I said as I walked into the forest around us.

We’d be at the hive first thing tomorrow morning. That was the best time to attack vampires. Carmon could tell they were holding thirty hostages, and there were a hundred vampires. Vampires were like rabbits. They reproduced crazy fast.

We wouldn’t have problems with the vampires. With all six of us, it was sure to be over quickly. Carmon had fought by himself without using most of his elemental power against two vampires and a demon while in Bard’s forest. If it had been me, it would have been over in seconds.

I could pin point every entry into and each exit out of the hive. There were only two each. Dalton would enter with Chris, and Jeff would enter with Adam. They were our fire and lightning guys, and they were the ones the vampires feared most. Dalton and Jeff were great assassins turned extractors, but they weren’t the strongest of us against vampires or demons.

Carmon had also mentioned that it looked like this group of vampires was also holding some of their own kind hostage with the women. Who knew what these vampires were up to.

All I knew was that I was here for a reason. What it was, I didn’t know, but I had a feeling it had something to do with the beautiful red head Life had put in my dreams since before we learned of the hive.

Please, be my mate. I need you.
