Both thought it was now safe (the Obscene Publications Act had been passed in 1959). It must be said that Bryant bravely quoted the opening passage in full in the first volume of his biography, which appeared in 1933.

Morrice was Pepys’s contemporary (1628–1702), a Cambridge graduate who used shorthand, but, according to Goldie’s account, his book is not so much a diary as a newsletter for Whig politicians.
