“You’re different, Sebastian, and as you know, I owe you. You saved my life over five-hundred years ago in New Orleans. You’re always welcome here, as are Miles and Raven. It’s just that the Order has a few mothers that I don’t even want to acknowledge, much less have as guests in my home.”
“I understand they do hire some bloody bastards that I wouldn’t want as house guests either. However, Emma does have to stay there, Sebastian. I regret that we can’t risk moving her right now. We can’t even risk coming near your place to get her until this blows over. It may be more than a few hours, unfortunately. Dark Hearts are probably swarming all over the damned area by now. Did Raven explain anything about why we’re protecting Emma?”
“Actually, he did. I’m sure I won’t have much of a choice in the matter, anyway. I expect a call from the Order as soon as they realize I have Emma. They’ll call in another favor or some shit so I have no choice.”
“They do make it hard to say no, don’t they?”
“Yes, sometimes I wonder who is worse the Order or Dark Hearts.”
“You already know the answer to that, my friend. Anyway, the Order protects your food supply or have you forgotten.”
“I know only too well. I’ve protected the humans for years. You know that I haven’t bitten anyone in forever. I’ve lived on blood bags from local hospitals. I’ve moved away from the big hospitals and clinics, I travel by thought teleportation. I take what I need and return home, but I’m not a fool. I’m aware that humans supply their blood by one means or another.”
“Yes, they do. It is handy to be able to move somewhere without having to actually travel. So, getting back to our original discussion, Emma can stay then, right?”
“I know it will be for more than a few hours as well as you do. However, we both know I don’t really have a choice. If I put her out and Dark Hearts gets her, we’re all screwed. She’ll be dead or worse, which I can’t do to any of us or her. If I try to move her in her weakened condition, it could hurt her. So, what the fuck choice is there? Y.E.S. she can stay, but I don’t want her here any longer than necessary, Sebastian. I mean it.”
“I understand and I do appreciate it, so will Miles. Victor, I’m working on an antidote for Emma’s blood. I’ve not had much luck yet, but I’ll keep trying. If you need something, just call Miles or me.”
“Nice offer, but exactly what the hell can you do over the telephone for me if I can’t control my urges; will you sing me a calming lullaby? Be realistic my friend, like usual, I’m on my own with your sweet, alluring Emma and I don’t want to be.”
“The strange thing is, Victor, that I trust you more with Emma than a few of the guys here. Be safe, old friend. I owe you.”
“Don’t you always, Sebastian.”
“This is one debt that I won’t mind repaying. I really do love her. She’s the best thing that’s ever happened to me, blood or no blood. I’ll keep you updated on Dark Hearts and the situation here. You know we’ll get Emma out of there as soon as we can.”
“I know. I just hope I can let her go by the time you get here,” Victor said, but he thought it won’t be soon enough.
“You will. Goodbye for now, Victor. Restraint, my friend, and be safe.”
“Goodbye, Sebastian, be safe, too.”
Victor paced the floor a few minutes before taking the food upstairs to Emma. He walked up the old-fashioned way. Teleporting directly into her room would probably cause her to be more alarmed than she already was prone to be when he was nearby. He knew it was the dark looks he was giving her, but he didn’t care. He had to keep her at a distance.
As he looked at the little human in his bed, well, she was little compared to him. He knew he’d likely lose more than his heart before she left…

Just a little bit about me…I live in the United States with my three dogs in a rambling home with a dark woods located directly behind me. No, it’s not haunted. At least I don’t think so. Then again, one of the eccentrics in my family insists that there’s a tall, dark man who visits the place. As long as he doesn’t pick walnuts off my trees and throw them at the windows or stand in front of the computer screen when I’m working out back, he can stay.
I’m an avid reader with a vivid imagination who dreams of fantasy characters, romance, and mystical places. Writing has been one of the greatest joys in my life. It gives me an outlet for some of my more memorable fantasies.
I spend at least three hours a day reading and writing. In addition to my love of the written word, I’m an accomplished vocalist and can be found practicing between books and, of course, dog walks.
I have always believed that you can do whatever you want in life…as long as you believe you can. Thank you for making one of my dreams come true…the dream of becoming an author.
