QUINTUS

This time, however, he’d gone willingly. Quintus had saved his life, bringing him back from the brink of death when he’d been too damn stubborn to admit he’d been ill. The cut on his arm had burned like a bitch but being Alpha, he’d hoped he could fight it on his own.

When Quintus and Gabriella had saved him, sharing their blood, making love, he’d known then he was going for Viktor. He agreed that with Gabriella’s past, there was no way Quintus could leave her.

After spending a week in Wyoming and checking in with his beta, he’d made the decision to enter Hell. He used the same spell Ilsbeth had given him a hundred years ago. Requiring wolf hair and a few other essentials, he’d waited until the full moon and opened the portal.

As always, entering Hell had been easy, but once he stepped inside the fiery demonic haven, his stomach had turned. Determined, he’d moved forward with his search into Lucifer’s inferno. Although he didn’t know Viktor Christiansen well, he’d made the sacrifice, refusing to accept his death.

The Alpha grunted, his spine aching from sitting on the cold stone floor. He estimated it had only been a week since he’d been captured. Ramiel had caught and flogged him, dragged him into the pits of his dungeon. He hadn’t seen the demon for days, but knew it wouldn’t be long before they came to torture him again.

A door creaked open, and rats scurried across the floor. Hunter shook his head, wondering what asshole was about to join him in his sardonic hell. A lesser being shuffled about, its hooves brushing sparks of hellfire into the air as it yanked the chains down onto the ground.

“Hey asshole, can I get some water over here?” the Alpha called to him. Fucking demons were evil but for the most part dumb as dirt. He’d kept an expulsion spell locked away in his pants. Although they’d whipped the hell out of his back, splitting open his skin, the fuckers had forgotten to search his jeans.

Hunter shoved his hands into his pocket, fingering the fine crystals he’d sewn into the fabric. One drop of water and he’d blast back to Wyoming and kiss the first bison he saw.

The cloven beast grunted, nodding toward the well. The water wasn’t given for comfort; rather its purpose was to keep victims alive for future torturing. The never-ending cycle was perpetuated over time, an infinite universe where victims were tortured, roused, healed and tortured again. Hunter knew the routine all too well but this time was prepared.

The minion filled a chalice and shoved it through the silver bars. Fuck yeah. Hunter reached for the cup. As the chain stretched, the metal seared deep into his skin. His forefinger rimmed the glass. That’s it…just a little bit more.

As he dipped his hand into the water, Hunter smiled. The chains snapped and the bars swung open, he shoved to his feet and scooped up the chalice. Time to get the hell out of this fuck hole. Later homies.

He brought the cup to his lips, readying to take the last step to open the portal, but stilled as he heard the cry. Goddammit. Just leave, Hunter. Don’t be an asshole, he told himself. But curiosity won, and as he put one foot in front of the other, moving toward its source, he cursed. He cautiously approached the darkened cave, suspecting it had been plated in silver, ensuring its occupants would both suffer and weaken.

“Fuck.” Hunter stopped in his tracks as he heard the female crying.

  “Hunter,” her voice pleaded.

“Sweet baby Jesus.” His heart caught at the familiar voice. No, no, no, this is not happening.

The Alpha stepped closer to the cell, peering through the thick silver bars. His pulse raced as he caught sight of the almost unrecognizable vampire lying on the dirt floor, his body beaten and bloodied. Viktor. A diminutive female sat next to him, holding his head in her lap. Her familiar blue eyes blinked up at him and he swore. Fuck it all to hell.

  “Ilsbeth.”
