“Are you leaving?” Emilia cried. She sat next to Oscar, her white dress spread out along the bench they shared, veil removed and replaced with a creamy-white wreath of flowers.

Evelyn smiled. “Well, I suppose we don't have to go back this evening,” she began slowly.

“You must stay with us, of course.” Oscar protested. “You, Bronson and Graham are our dearest friends. Closer than friends. We are a family.”

Evelyn smiled. They all glanced to where Lord Everett had slipped off, heading to an early rest. They all bore some scars of their wounding. Emilia still limped, Evelyn noted, though she walked slowly and sedately so no one noticed it too much. Bronson had his scar, Lord Oscar could not move the index finger on his right hand. Lord Everett fell asleep without warning. Her?

She touched the scar over her right ear. It had healed, leaving the hair there a shade paler than the rest, though when it mixed in with the other strands, one barely noticed.

Since having saved Lord Everett's life, she had acquired a fearsome reputation among the servants, and most of them came to her if they experienced trouble with their health, proceeding through the channels of her maid or Wallace. The pale lock of hair had become part of her legend, apparently significant of her knowledge of healing. Just last week, a maid had approached her begging her to help her to conceive. The request had struck Evelyn as amusing at the time, given her own state. Her hand moved protectively toward her own abdomen, where, she knew, a new life began, sheltered deep within.

Perhaps I received some magic during that night, she thought with a smile. She looked up to catch Bronson's eye and saw his gentle smile. On the other hand, mayhap there was more to it than magic, she considered, feeling her own heart pounding rapidly, her cheeks burning as their eyes met. That night had renewed her knowledge of her love for Bronson, and had her knowledge of his love was also renewed. Mayhap, she thought, smiling drowsily up at the lilac-mauve sky above them, mayhap the magic is love.
