  Chapter One

The field to the right lay out flat as far as the eye could see and was contrasted by the thick forest to the left. Night had fallen hours before and the almost full moon hanging high in the dark sky cast shadows along the pavement. Where there were no shadows, the road appeared to twinkle like diamonds surrounded by silver. The glow of the moon created a kind of blue haze across the barren plain. The night was still and silent with a chill in the air, but not as cold as one would expect in Pennsylvania in early December.

Small mounds of white, gray, and black snow were scattered along the roadside, hinting that snow had fallen not too long ago in the region, but not for quite a while. No sounds could be heard except for the light patter of four feet as they walked down the center of the road.

Two lithe forms moved gracefully in perfect sync side by side. Feet advancing, long, slender legs eating up the miles, hips swaying sensually, with their arms interlaced. One wore a pair of tight purple jeans, knee-high white furry boots, and a white furry coat, with the hood pulled up over their head. The other wore tight black jeans and black combat boots, with a long brown suede jacket that ended just below their ass. A dark gray knit hat on top of their head, with just a hint of jet-black and blue strands of hair peeking out of the edges.

A white sign came into view and the pair didn’t stop until they reached it. “Welcome to Sanctuary. Population 10,792,” it read.

“This is the place,” the soft voice announced happily.

“Are you sure he’s here, Shay?” the other voice asked anxiously.

“Oh, he’s here all right. Come on, Kia. Let’s not keep the man waiting any longer,” Shay answered and tightened his hold on Kia’s arm, leading him away from the sign.

The pair continued on their way down the center of the road. A slight breeze began to blow and Kia tightened the collar around his throat. “I hope it doesn’t start to snow before we get there.”

Shay lifted his head and took in a long breath through his nose. “Nope. Doesn’t smell like snow, and the sky is clear. I think we’ll be okay.”

After another twenty minutes of walking in silence, Kia cleared his throat and swallowed. Shay smiled, knowing his lover was nervous and dying to ask a million questions…again. “Just ask, Kia.”

“Are you sure he’ll welcome us?” The uncertainty in Kia’s voice was evident from the small hitch Shay could hear.

“Yes, Kia. I am very sure. When have I ever steered us wrong?”

Kia sighed, releasing a small chuckle with it. “Never.”

“Exactly. So, stop being nervous. Everything will be just fine,” Shay promised as he patted Kia’s hand, which was wrapped around his arm.

“How can you not be nervous? He has no idea who we are, what we are, or that we are even coming. All I keep seeing in my head is the man taking one look at us and running the other way.”

“Why would looking at us make him run the other way? There’s nothing wrong with the way we look. I, for one, am fucking gorgeous and absolutely fabulous. And you are to die for. You’re sexy as hell, smart, loyal, kind, brilliant, and great in bed,” Shay answered as he squeezed Kia’s arm.

“Well, you got one thing right. You are
fucking gorgeous and fabulous. But me, not so much,” Kia said as his shoulders drooped.

Shay stopped immediately and looked at Kia as if he had twenty heads and purple kittens flying out of his ass. “Everything I said about you is one hundred percent truth. You know that I cannot tell a lie. You need to stop doing that to yourself and start seeing the amazing man that I see when I look at you,” Shay admonished.

Kia gave him a small smile and ducked his head. “I know you think I’m all that and a bag of chips, but I just don’t see it, Shay.”

“Fine,” Shay said abruptly and slid his arms through Kia’s again, then started walking, pulling Kia along with him. “Then I will have to tell you every day until you do.”

After another two hours of walking and the moon dipping down over the western horizon, the duo finally spotted the first signs of life in Sanctuary. A few houses began to pop up along the side of the road, and the closer they got to town, the closer the houses became. Shay and Kia stopped in the center of town, right before a pretty little park with a gazebo right in its center. The two circled, looking at all the small shops along Main Street.

“Such a cute town, isn’t it, Kia?”

“It’s like something right out of a storybook or movie. I didn’t think places like this existed.”

“I told you the Alpha Prime was different. He cares about his family, his pack, and his people. And I don’t just mean wolf shifters. He cares about all creatures, big and small,” Shay said and winked at Kia.

“I hope so, because I still think we’re crazy to come to a pack of predators when we’re both prey.”

“Predator, prey, who cares? Here in Sanctuary with the Alpha Prime, we will be safer than we have ever been.”

“Do you think so? I mean really?” Kia asked nervously.

“Yes, really. Come on, we still have a few miles to burn up until we get there,” Shay answered.

They walked through town until the houses began to spread apart again. Slowly the homes disappeared, and only forest remained around them. No leaves were on the trees, only the pines still held their needles and color. A small dirt road appeared to the right and Shay turned them.

“Here? Are you sure?” Kia asked.

“Yes, Kia. Please stop questioning me. It makes me feel like you don’t believe in me,” Shay stated sadly.

Kia stopped and turned to Shay. “No, Shay, never. I will always believe in you.”

Shay gave Kia a soft smile and reached up, brushing a small tuft of hair from his eye. “I know you are nervous, Kia. So am I. But I promise you this is the right place. This is where we are meant to be. Now, he will not be there when we arrive, but they won’t turn us away. He’ll be joining us soon. I know we have nothing to fear here. I promise.” Shay leaned in and placed a gentle kiss on Kia’s lips, before pulling away and continuing down the dirt road.

After another few miles, the large iron gates appeared, and behind them, a long cobblestone drive lined with healthy tall trees. Shay released Kia’s arm and placed his hand on the gates. He closed his eyes and concentrated. “There are some very powerful wards on these gates, just like the ones crossing over into the pack lands.”

“Can you get us through? There is a call box there. Maybe we should call up first?” Kia asked.

“I can get us through. And I like the element of surprise, it keeps people on their toes,” Shay answered mischievously. After a few moments, there was a small click and the gate popped open. Shay opened his eyes and pushed it further, then turned to Kia with a bright smile. “Let’s go.”

They walked through the large gates and Shay turned back, closing the gates behind them. “Don’t want to leave them unguarded. That wouldn’t be the greatest introduction to our new family, now would it?” Shay said, then grasped the gate, and closed his eyes. A moment later, another click sounded and Shay pulled on the gate, but it wouldn’t budge. “There, it’s all good.”

They walked up the long drive, admiring the scenery around them. Suddenly the top of a large house came into view, looming larger as they walked closer. The cobblestone drive opened into a large open space with cars and trucks lined up along the left side. A beautiful fountain sat in the center with a stone statue of two wolves. It looked like they were cuddling.

Shay and Kia made their way around the structure to the other side and climbed the four wide slate steps leading to a matching patio, then stopped in front of the big, wooden double doors.

“Here we go, Kia,” Shay exclaimed.

“You were right, Shay. This place is so big and beautiful. I have never seen a log cabin so big in my life,” Kia stated in appreciation as he looked around.

“And we can only see the front. The rest of it is even grander.” Shay turned to face the doors again and rang the bell, then held his breath. He knew they would be welcomed, but he was feeling a little nervous himself. Beyond this door lay their future.

Taylor couldn’t believe what Xavier and the others were telling everyone. Not only had they managed to defeat this crazy Agatha person, but Liam and Xavier had had sex right there in front of everyone and he wasn’t there to watch. Damn, he was jealous.

Taylor watched Xavier lean in and whisper something to Liam. Then Xavier pulled back and gave his mate a wink, clearing his throat, and turned back to the group.

“So, where has Cass been while all this was going on?” Xavier asked, changing the subject.

Just then, the doorbell rang. Taylor jumped from his seat and headed for the kitchen door. “Oh, and don’t think your tactic of changing the subject worked. I want details later,” he threw over his shoulder as he disappeared down the hall.

He ran toward the front of the house to the door, grabbed the handle, and opened the door. Taylor found two of the cutest little hotties he had ever seen standing on their front porch. He smiled brightly at the duo. “Well, hello there,” Taylor greeted in a sweet voice. “Well, aren’t you two just gorgeous? Can I help you?”

Heavy rushing feet came barreling down the hall behind him. Taylor turned to see what was going on and found his mate, Gabe, and Micah running in his direction. Before Taylor could ask what kind of fire had been lit under their asses, Gabe had scooped him up into his arms and pulled Taylor away from the door. Micah stepped in the opening, looking at the two men.

“What in the hell is going on, guys?” Taylor asked.

“No one should be able to get past the gates, sweet baby. You shouldn’t just run for the door like that,” Gabe admonished gently.

Taylor rolled his eyes and looked at his mate in annoyance. “I’m the freaking Guardian, Gabriel. I think I can handle opening the door. Even if that does mean there is a crazy ass lunatic on the other side. And have you seen our visitors? I don’t think they are here to harm us.”

“You know as well as I do that you can’t judge a book by its cover, sweet baby. You don’t know if they have any powers. And if they do, you don’t know what those powers are or how they will use them against you.”

Taylor looked over his shoulder at the two cuties standing silently at the door. “Are you two some kind of sick serial killers looking to tear off my limbs and feast on them?”

The one in the knit hat drew back slightly as his face twisted in revulsion. The other cutie’s eyes went wide open as his brows shot to his hairline. “Um…no.”

“Think you could answer that a little more confidently before my mate and the alpha eat you?” Taylor replied.

“We’re not serial killers and we’re not here to hurt anyone. We came here looking for someone,” the taller of the two answered.

“Who are you looking for, little one?” Micah asked in his friendliest voice.

“See, babe, Micah’s okay with them, so you can put me down now, big guy,” Taylor said and rubbed a hand down his mate’s massive chest.

Gabe hesitantly put Taylor on his feet, but wouldn’t release him. Taylor rolled his eyes again, then turned in Gabriel’s arms so that he c
ould face the action.

“We came here looking for Castiel Angel,” the hottie answered.

  “And you are?” Micah asked.

“I am Shay, and this is Kia,” Shay answered.

“Hello, Shay, Kia. Is there anything we can help you with? Cass isn’t home right now,” Micah offered.

“Would it be okay if we came in and waited for him? We’ve been walking all day and my puppies are barking,” Shay said.

  Taylor giggled. “I like him.”

Shay gave Taylor a bright smile. “Thank you, Taylor. I like you, too. Someday, we are going to be very good friends and thick-as-thieves.”

Taylor narrowed his eyes at Shay. “How did you know my name?”

“I know all of you. You are Taylor Angel. Mated to that big wolf, Gabriel Angel, brother to Castiel and Balthazar—well, Raffy—and cousin to the Alpha Prime, Micah Angel. You are also best friend to Jesse Angel, mate to the Prime, and known as the Heart. You are the Guardian of the Heart,” Shay answered.

“And how do you know all of this, Shay?” Micah asked suspiciously.

Shay gave Micah a bright smile. “Because I have seen you all in my visions. That is how I knew where to find you. I promise you that I mean you no harm or ill will. Kia and I have come a long way to meet Castiel. We have something for him that I know he is looking for, but thought he lost forever.”

“And what would that be?” Gabriel asked.

Shay turned his attention to Gabe and smiled. “His mates.”

  * * * *

They were brought into the house and escorted to a very large, homey kitchen, where a lot of men sat around all looking at them as they walked in. Kia swallowed hard. Some of them were very big and looked lethal. He grabbed Shay’s hand and moved closer to him. Shay gave his hand a light squeeze then gave him that wonderful smile of his.
