‘I couldn’t believe Major Seely had really given you the sack when you told me. Now you’ll be all right,’ Pat said.

  ‘What about you?’

‘I shall stay a bit longer in London. Then I may take a job. I don’t know really. I haven’t decided,’ Pat said, starting to chew a blade of grass. ‘Perhaps I’ll go abroad. We might meet at a horse show. Wouldn’t that be fun? Supposing we met in Paris? I should feel so smart knowing you if you were jumping for England. I should feel very proud.’

‘Do you remember me schooling Tornado up and down here?’ asked David.

‘Yes. Doesn’t it seem years ago?’

  ‘Yes. Years.’

They walked on together, and it seemed to David, that he had almost everything he could ask for in life, that in a matter of a few hours his life had somersaulted from disaster to success.

And I nearly gave up, he remembered, but, as Mum would say, everything has turned out for the best in the end.

‘I shall come and see you some time in Devon. I’ve got friends near you I can stay with,’ said Pat.

‘That’ll be lovely,’ replied David, imagining Pat ‘nannying’ him as she had in the old days, biting her nails and tearing her hair with excitement.
