A.K.A.

“Why is he limping?”
“It’s Mark.”
All he can do is shake his head.
Feet away from the AKA, Drake appears from the cabin and waves. “You’re home.”
“That I am.”
I step onto the boat.
Drake pulls me into him and kisses me breathless.
“Wow. What was that for?”
“Does a husband need a reason to kiss his wife?”
“Not if he kisses her like that.”
I set my briefcase down on a deck chair.
Drake frowns.
“What?”
“Are you okay? You look beat.”
“Oh, I am, hunky man,” Mark says as he makes his way toward us.
“Dad wasn’t talking to you, silly.”
Mark steps aboard and pulls up a deck chair. “My feet are killing me,” he says as he removes his shoes. “Go make me a drink, Jack Aden.”
Jack salutes him and jumps onto Mark’s boat, The Hangover II.
“Rough day at the office, dear?” Drake asks him.
“You have no idea. Your wife is a slave driver. For the money she’s making, you’d think she’d buy me lunch, at the very least. But nooo.”
“It’s a free legal clinic,” I tell him. “I’m volunteering my legal services.”
“Seriously?”
I nod.
“You’re not getting paid?”
“Nope. And neither are you.”
“I thought that was the name, The Free Clinic, as in someone’s name or something. Don’t I feel stupid.”
“Don’t you look stupid,” I tell him.
“Stupid and poor,” Drake adds.
He frowns.
Jack jumps aboard and hands Mark his frozen margarita. “Bless you, sweet boy. I have taught you well.”
“Did you show Mom our surprise, Dad?”
“Not yet.”
“What surprise?”
“Oh, just a little painting and stuff.”
“What do you mean ‘and stuff’?”
“I finally fixed that stubborn leak.”
I shake my head and smile.
“What? You’ve been asking me for months to fix it.”
“I know. It’s just that I… well, I—”
“Oh for the love of God,” Mark says. “Must I do everything? You’re going to need a bigger boat in six months.”
