“That’s good. But I want my family together under one roof.” He gave me a knowing look.

“I know you do. LC, you know Larry is your family too, right?” I reminded him.

  “I know that, Chippy.”

“And so are NeeNee and Curtis and Kenny. Those boys are gonna need you, and so is he.”

  He didn’t say anything.

“I’m sorry you had to deal with all of this. And NeeNee and the boys are committed to being there for your brother, so I need you to be there for him too,” I said.

Larry was now living in Central State Hospital in Milledgeville, Georgia. Years ago, when it was agreed that Larry needed to be placed, Central State was the one institution that LC insisted his brother not be placed. He hated the thought of his brother being a patient in one of the country’s largest asylums. Now, we all knew that it was the best place for Larry to receive the level of treatment he needed.

“I know.” LC nodded, then added, “And I will.”

I looked over at my husband and saw the pain and worry on his face. I knew that the recovery he had gone through after being shot was nothing compared to the healing he would need from the broken heart he now had. Getting back to normal was going to take longer than I thought, but we Duncans were strong. We’d made it through so many trials together, and we’d make it through this one too.
