“I’m not sure we can use hellhounds in this situation. The witches’ guild was able to put together information for us, it’s in the case file, try reading it. The portal is in the middle of Central Park, I thought you were listening to me?”

“I was… sort of.” Jason admitted then reopened the file and read it more carefully. He could see why the hellhounds in this situation could spell a recipe for disaster. Humans had a hard enough time with the concept of supernatural, and many still lashed out if they could identify them. A hell hound looked like a two headed Rottweiler with horns and glowing red eyes. There was no way to hide the very distinct look without an elf who had the ability to use magic to hide the dog’s appearance. Or a witch who had mastered hiding spells.

“Okay, so what’s our game plan?” Jason asked Peter, as he reclosed the file and looked at him, waiting for more information. Peter was the thinker of the group, whereas Jason was more of the muscle.

“We go check out the portal, pick up any evidence we can find that the witches may have missed, interview witnesses.” Peter looked at Jason for a moment, and hesitated, he was worried about what he was going to share with him, that it would bring up bad memories for the man.

“Cat got your tongue?” Jason teased Peter, who made a face at him. As a were-wolf he wasn’t a fan of cat shifters.

“There… is a witness, who described a woman who looked like Ashara. I… have the report on my desk if you’d like to look it over, I took it out of the file because I was trying to decide if it was a legitimate lead or someone trying to mess with us.” Peter told him and touched his cheek with his fingertips before he kept speaking. “I wanted to warn you though, when we go re-interview the old bat.”

“Is she literally a bat, or just batty?” Jason asked, letting the news sink in. He felt numb. After five hundred years, he really had thought he’d finally gotten over Ashara. Even hearing Revar might be back hadn’t struck a nerve that deep. But someone describing Ashara? That stung.

“She’s an old lady. Batty, not a bat shifter.”

“Why don’t we stop there first, that way we can interview her and then disregard any information she has if it doesn’t match up with everything else. There’s no way Ashara can be alive. We saw her body ourselves. Her own mother claimed her body to give her a proper send off. It’s not possible.” Jason said, his brain trying to make sense of everything.

“I know,” Peter said and gave his friend a pat on the shoulder, trying to show him that he understood the turmoil this interview would cause.

  “Let’s go.”
