  “I’m sorry,” I tell him. “For not being out there for you. I wish I could say I would have done things differently if I had known you were sick, but that would be a lie. You hang on until I get cut loose, you hear me? Don’t you putter off while I’m still in here.”

  “I’m going to try, I promise you that,” Deacon says as he gives me one more hug. “It’s good having Torin back home helping out. I’m gonna work with him to get him up to speed on all the club business. No matter what happens, I want you to know I’m at peace. Knowing that you and Torin, and now men like that Abe fellow are going to inherit what I’ve helped build…well, it’s all I’ve ever wanted. I love you, boy. Now get on, before that guard decides to drag me back to the cell with you.”

  “I love you too, Deacon. We’ll take good care of the Savage Kings, I swear to you. No matter where you ride, you can believe that your legacy will always be a group you can be proud of. Take care of yourself, until next time.”

  “You too, Chase,” he says with a smile. “No matter how bad things get, just remember that all of this here is only temporary. The best is yet to come for you, boy. I can feel it in my bones. You may have a long road ahead of you, but you’re a Savage fucking King. Don’t you ever forget it.”
