“I have determined the cause of death to be the gunshot wound to the head. However, my inspection of her body uncovered another piece of information that I feel I need to share with you. I’m sorry to inform you, especially since I’m not sure if you knew, but Miss King was pregnant at the time of her death. Unfortunately, the unborn child didn’t survive either.”

  At hearing this news, my mother crumples to the floor in her grief, taking my father down with her. I don’t join them. I place my head in my folded arms on her slab and cry for a loss I could’ve never prepared myself for.

  I made it through the funeral in a daze. I kept hearing the details repeated: “shot in the head point blank”, “unborn child”. Whoever killed her, knew her. She would’ve never stopped for a stranger. Or would she have? She wasn’t the girl I thought her to be. But that doesn’t matter now. She’s gone, her baby’s gone, and nothing can fix that. My parents were too late. I was too late. My sister was too late. She’s gone, and I’ll never be OK. The one sister I had is now shattered. My life is shattered.

  I failed her. I acted too late, and my family was torn apart as a result. Marcy paid for my hesitancy.

  I’ll never hug her again, I’ll never see her smile again, and I’ll never have closure.

  I am a broken shell of the boy I once was. Shattered into a million pieces. I don’t think I’ll ever feel whole again.
