Loose floor tiles and rubble littered the ground. Exposed electrical wiring protruded through the cracked walls as they sparkled and fizzled due to the extensive damage. The rest of the platoon watched the two soldiers disappear into the thick of the smoke and vanish from sight. A few more seconds of silence passed when suddenly a shrill screaming cut through the air. Rez emerged, untouched by the onslaught of bullets, and used his gunblade to impale one of the two soldiers. As some of the smoke began to clear, the soldiers saw Rez holding his left hand up with his palm open and facing them. They were in complete disbelief. They bore witness to the power of the EKSS shield.

The remaining soldier cried out, “Target at twelve o'clock! Fire! Fire! Fire!”

As more gunfire rained down on Rez, he braced for impact within the confines of the EKSS.

“Current shield capacity eighty-four percent and dropping rapidly,” Xandra reported.

I know, I know! I can’t just sit here! he thought to himself.

Rez changed the gunblade back to gun form, took out a special ammo clip, and placed it in the gun. It was one of his untested powerpulse rounds. There was a meter gauge on the back end of the barrel that began to turn blue and charge. As the gun charged, light particles from the air surrounding the barrel began to illuminate and converge into a growing mass of powerful, glowing energy.

The Psi-Corp gunfire was becoming more and more concentrated. Hmm, this squad leader asshole is pretty smart. Concentrating all your firepower on one point, huh? Rez thought to himself. Gun charged at almost at fifty percent. This will probably take out the entire room. It has to work! Before he could fire the shot, he saw a pair of glowing orange eyes through the smoke. Daav stood behind the soldiers.

“Aw, come on, you pansies! You see that this guy is taking all your fucking fire and he’s still standing? Shit, man, what’s a guy gotta do to get some damn good support around here? Huh?” Daav yelled, grinning from ear to ear with a cigar hanging from his mouth and a Quantum Corp RPG slung over his shoulder.“You really did it, kid. You got me. You can fight. I’ll give you that. But see, I like toys. They’re fucking fun to play with. And this one here? Oh, man! I’m sorry, kid. I hate that it had to end like this. We coulda been friends in another life. Oh, well! See ya!” Daav sneered.

“Clear the way, you softies!” Daav ordered the last of the platoon.

He fired the RPG. Rez put every bit of his concentration into reinforcing the EKSS. The blast from the special RPG clashed with the shield, lighting up the entire room. The shield wasn’t going to hold. Before he could do anything about it, Rez felt the power of the cannon blast him through the window. The Electro-Kinetic Shield System receded back into Rez’s palm. If it wasn’t for that shield, Rez would’ve been dead.

The shots impact and his injuries started to affect him. He started to lose consciousness, mid-air. Despite the ninety story fall, which guaranteed death, he felt peaceful. He thought about everything he’d accomplished. He was satisfied that he did something to help; to be the one to spark the revolution. The people of Neon District deserved much better than what they’d been given.

Yvora, Mom, I did it! Rez thought, before he lost consciousness and plunged into darkness.
