Micah sighed. “Do you remember when you tried on that lipstick from the Epic people or whoever?”

  Savannah blinked. “No, I don’t.”

“I figured you wouldn’t. It was so insignificant after all. But Nascha never forgot what I said. That you look better than her.”

“That can’t be it, Micah. Everyone in the world loved her.”

“Everyone but me,” he said softly, still twirling her hair in his fingers. “Nascha was never as beautiful as the woman who sits in front of me. She was never as kind or as generous of heart as her. She wasn’t perfect like you are.”

“I can’t believe that—that—” Her voice trailed off. From her expression, he knew Savannah was starting to see things in a new light.

“It wasn’t that Nascha had interest in me. It was because she didn’t have my interest. When she started to lose work because of her age, my comment must have been the last straw. Then when the Feds came into the picture, why not kill two birds with one stone?”

He let go of her hair. “I’m sorry, Savannah.”

She shook hard. “Three years. We lost three years because, because…” A sob erupted from her throat and Micah grabbed her into himself. It hurt like crazy to think their break up was all because of one woman’s selfish ambitions and desire for money. Their lives had been thrown apart.

  But not now.

She sobbed into his chest and he held onto her, kissing her hair at times because he knew she needed this. He prayed for her silently as well, hoping one day, she would be able to get past the pain.

How long they sat there, even as Savannah’s tears subsided, was anyone’s guess. Eventually, Savannah stirred.

“Micah, is that all you came to tell me today?”

He used a finger to lift her chin so he could feast on the beauty of her two-tone eyes. “No, that wasn’t all I came here to tell you today.”

“What else did you want to say to me?”

Did she know? From the look in her eyes, she already knew.

“I love you, Savannah. You’re my cure for everything that’s wrong with me. I need you in my life. Please don’t send me back home in that house where you aren’t there. Please let me come live with you and raise Liliana as our own. Please, love. I truly can’t and don’t want to live without you. Please let me stay with you forever.”

Savannah’s eye glowed. “I love you, Micah. You’re the best thing that ever happened to me. I want to stay with you forever. When you left that day, I finally understood the hell you went through. I never want to be away from your side again. But, we do have a problem.”

Micah frowned. “What problem? What could possibly be wrong now?”

She pulled away from him and reached into her pocket. Unfolding a piece of paper, she looked down at it and then back at him. “I’ve learned to say yes in twenty languages.”

  EPILOGUE

  Two years later…

“Liliana, Markita, be careful now,” Savannah called out the front door to the girls as they played basketball. “Don’t hurt yourself.”

“Oh, the girls will be fine,” Micah said, coming up from behind her. ‘The net’s only a couple of inches taller than them and they’re playing on grass. How much injury can they get from that?”

Savannah smiled. It had taken months for both girls to recover from the fire, but they had. There was some scarring on both of their bodies but over time, even that would change. Liliana wasas active as any five-year-old could be and for that, Savannah was grateful.

“Not much,” Savannah conceded and then yawned. “How was work?”

“Busy. I didn’t think moving back to Tawas would keep me as busy as all this.”

“Why wouldn’t it? Small town doesn’t mean small business.”

Micah grinned and gave her long, lingering kiss on the mouth. “True. Are you ready for your presentation for tomorrow?”

Savannah went over to her desk and pulled out a folder. “Yeah, I think so. You want to take a look at it?”

  “Sure.”

She smiled as she handed over the folder. Micah walked back to the front door to check on the girls. Being married to him had been better than any dream she had. They were truly meant for each other.

“Savvy, there’s only a picture of a grasshopper in here.”

“Huh, really?” She picked up the folder and made a show of going over it. “That seems odd. Why is there a picture of a grasshopper in here?”

“Were you showing insect pictures to Liliana again?”

“Yeah. The child really likes bugs, let me tell you. I’ve no idea where she got that from.”

Micah tugged a strand of her hair. “Probably because her aunt keeps calling her ladybug….”

His voiced stopped and his amber eyes widened. “Savvy, are you telling me…we’re going to have a grasshopper? I mean…we’re going to have a baby?”

She giggled. “Yes. I just found out today.”

“Whoo hooo!” Micah lifted her into the air. “We’re going to have a grasshopper! A baby!”

He whirled her around and then set her down. His hands drifted into her hair and he kissed her long and deep. “I can’t believe it. A grasshopper!”

“No one will ever understand why we’ll call our kids tiny insects, will they?”

  Micah grinned. “Does it matter?”

Savannah sighed in bliss and stared out at the two little girls. “Nope, not at all.”
