Her Bodyguard: A BBW Billionairess Romance
Page 8
Chapter Seven
Amy waited not so patiently while Tom dragged her angry cousin out of the room. Two other guys dressed in military gear hauled the dead bodies away, leaving Amy alone with Drew.
She cleared her throat, glancing down at her still-bound wrists. “Do you think I can bribe you into letting me loose?”
He strode across to her, his movements packed with lethal grace, and dropped to crouch before her. From nowhere he produced a knife, the vicious blade glittering under the harsh overhead light, and cut the ties on her ankles.
“Are you okay?” he demanded, moving on to her wrists. Before she could answer though, he yanked her up out of the chair and into his arms. “Shit, I thought I’d lost you. Don’t you ever fucking scare me like that again.”
Before she had a chance to stop it, tenderness spread inside her at how scared he sounded. She didn’t expect that. He was a professional, used to living this type of situation on a daily basis. What could make him frightened for her life? She wanted to ask him then and there about it, but the thought of hearing him say anything other than loving words stopped her. She tried to sound flippant once she was able to get her voice to work. “It wasn’t really my idea, you know.”
“Shut up. Just...shut up.” He brushed the hair back from her face, his eyes on hers, but this time she was fairly sure he wasn’t just checking for a concussion. Instead, he seemed to be searching for the answer to the meaning of life. Feeling uncomfortable, she started to wriggle, opening her mouth to complain.
…which was when he kissed her. Boy did he kiss her. He swooped in, his tongue owning hers. There was no softness, nothing sweet to the kiss. It was all about him. Possessing her. She leaned closer, curling her hands around his neck and gripping the short strands of his hair in her grasp. Energy zipped through her veins like explosives ready to go off. He’d turned her on with just a kiss. A kiss she couldn’t stop and wanted more of. Hell, she wanted him naked. Now.
He broke away, his breathing ragged, and rested his forehead against hers. Tension held his body taut, a fine tremor running through his muscles. “Never... You’re never getting out of my sight again. Understand me?”
***
He’d been true to his word. The entire time they spoke to police and then on the ride back to her place, he’d stuck so close she would bump him if she moved. She entered her apartment with his departure on her mind. There could be no more plots to kidnap her. Her uncle had been arrested, and now Drew’s job was over. Her chest ached. She didn’t want him to go, but she sure as hell wouldn’t ask him to stay. He was one of those guys that lived on the edge, and she was too unadventurous for that kind of life. Besides, it wasn’t like he’d said he’d stay.
She dropped her bag on a table and turned to her room. “You don’t have to stay. I know you have things to do. More important things.”
He stood in the middle of the room and folded his arms. The expression on his face was somewhere between forbidding and confused. “Okay, I think I missed something. Did I or did I not just storm a building full of armed men to rescue you? Did I or did I not tell you never to scare the crap out of me again?”
“Yeah, so? That’s what you’ve been doing for the entire time I’ve known you. Yelling at me for not being able to defend myself and kicking my ass on the mat. What’s your point?”
He looked like he wanted to hit something but seemed to settle for stalking towards her. She froze, the flight-or-fight instinct kicking in, and then got lost watching the pure masculine beauty of the way he walked. How could she ever have thought he’d settle down? He was a warrior born and bred.
“How many people do you think I’ve rescued?” He was less than a step away from her now, an unreadable expression in his eyes. His accent was more clipped and sexier than ever. Perhaps she could record it? She’d make a damn fortune if she could add it to some of the automated systems AmRey’s technical section was developing. Maybe she’d just listen to it at night when she was lonely and thinking of him.
“A lot of people. That’s kind of a silly question. It’s what you do for a living, no?”
His lips pursed, irritation flashing in his eyes for a second. “Yes, a lot of people. How many of them do you suppose I kissed the daylights out of when I did rescue them?” He held up a finger to stop her talking. “And, just so you’re aware, ninety percent of them were male. How many times do you think I was terrified I wouldn’t make it in time? Not because all those people didn’t matter, because they did, but because if I lost them, then I lost my entire reason for living?”
He looked at her for a moment, but growled in frustration and turned away when she didn’t reply. His hand shook as he ran it through his hair, and he laughed. Bitterly. “Should have known better. Fucking bodyguard and the billionaire, sounds like a fucking chick flick. I’m a fucking idiot.”
He dropped his hand and turned. The emotion was gone from his eyes. He was back to the professional soldier. “Okay, right. Now I’ve made a complete twat of myself. Tom is fully up to date with everything I’ve done, and he’ll take over from me. I’ve made a short list of people I know and trust, if you need extra firepower. Although I’d recommend my brother, after me, he’s the best. And he’s about to leave the service, so he’s looking for work.”
Panic held her immobile for a second, before she realized he was readying to walk out of her life. Not after saying what he just did. There was too much she didn’t get to ask. To say. “Drew, wait!”
She rushed to follow him and ran around his side, to face him. “What do you mean the bodyguard and the billionaire? You…” She gulped, pushing back the knot in her throat, “…want to stay? With me?”
Emotions played over his face, and for a second, she worried she’d read too much into his words. So she chose to open up instead.
“I love you!” If he chose to leave, she knew it was because he didn’t feel the same way.
He closed his eyes, dropping his head back. “Thank fuck for that.” When he looked at her again, his eyes blazed with need and something deeper. He reached out a hand, slid it around her waist, and tugged her closer. “Of course I want to stay, for us to be together. Didn’t I just say that?”
“No. I don’t recall you saying you loved me,” she laughed. “I know I’d record that if you did.” She loved the way he held her like she was the most precious thing in the world. “Go on. Say it or I’ll nag you until you do. Admit it, you love me. Everyone does.”
“Everyone better not be telling you that,” he growled, pulling until there was no distance at all between them. They were pressed together from torso to knee, and everything else in between. Every. Thing. He brushed his lips over hers. “Because if they do, I might have to kill them. I’m apparently good at that, or so my former bosses told me.”
“You say the most romantic things.” Her heart filled with joy. He loved her. Sure he might not say it, but he did love her. She could see in his eyes. His fear over losing her to a possible murderer. And it wasn’t just the hot sex, either. “Don’t worry, I will send the memo out that I’m off-limits. Now how about you and I go check out my bed again. It’s nice and big and lonely.”
“In a minute.” He pulled back to look at her. His expression was totally open, honest. “You might have guessed I’m not good with expressing emotions. Never have been. And men like me...we don’t look beyond the next mission. Or I didn’t. Now I have a new one, and I’m hoping my new boss thinks I’m better than for just killing people…”
He bent down and scooped her up, held her close to his chest. “Amanda, I love you. I’ve loved you since you thought I was helping you out of a fire that first time. You have no idea how much I wanted to keep going and kidnap you for real.”
“Your new boss knows you’re much more than just a killing machine. Or a sex machine.” She grinned, sliding her fingers through his hair. “I love you too. I can’t even tell you how much your words mean. I didn’t expect my feelings to grow this much for you
, but I wouldn’t change them for the world.” She brushed her lips over his and sighed. “Now take me to bed. We can discuss the rest of your new responsibilities there.”
“Yes Ma’am.” His lips quirked. “You know, I’ve always had a thing for women in powerful positions… If I asked nice, reckon I could get you into a uniform?”
“If you ask nicely, you could tie me up and do anything you want again.”
He winked, already heading for the bedroom. “Oh, believe me, I’d already planned on that one.”
